      useful IC secrets

      <handwiggle>

I drop plot hooks in my RP all the time. I ST. I love to ST. I leave hooks for plots in progress. Fledgling plots. Hooks to things in my character BGs. I run NPCs in general scenes to provide atmosphere and they have hooks dangling, too. Something, anything for people to chase after.

People rarely ever do. I mean, unless you're wanting me to deliver said secret ala hammer straight to the head.

Because, man, you have no idea how excited I got when @scar reacted to the little glowy things I was referencing in RP the other day (@Seraphim73 can tell you >.>). It was an 'omg yes someone is ACTUALLY PICKING UP ON THINGS IN MY POSES THAT CAN CARRY ON TO FUTURE RP YESSSSSSS.'

And I think giving XP/skill progression just for going out and RPing with people is kind of silly. You should want to RP with new people. πŸ˜•

Very true. Though I think anything that directly impacts the characters, not the players (such as XP in your example) is always going to butt up against RP. What blindsides me sometimes are subtle things like @SG (I think it was) saying that they didn’t like to RP any more on BSGU because people were mostly using scene temprooms instead of grid rooms. Which is a valid point, but my experience was the exact opposite. So I agree - code can impact the game in surprising ways.

Yeah, it's stupid. It's not you, it's me. I think I have this sticky idea of awesome temp rooms being for plots, hangout/casual scenes are for grid that I can't shake for some reason. I'm sure I'll get over it one of these days.

It's a very hard thing to get over. I have, but it did take time and a concentrated effort. Now that I have? It's great.

Part of it was training myself to check 'scenes' as much as 'where.' Which I'm still not as good at, but I'm getting there. πŸ™‚ (It also means training the playerbase into setting 'scene/summary' on their scene before rather than after the fact, something I'm not consistent at myself!)

This is why I can't play these games. I thought this was Robin Wright.

Face blindness is a real problem y'all. I can't just imagine person as thing.
Except in certain cases. I know Matthew McConahahahahaha has a punchable face. I remember that. I couldn't describe him for a sketch artist, but I know whenever I see him that I want to deck him.

HOW DARE YOU mistake Gwyneth Paltrow for Robin Wright!

I thought it was Cate Blanchett

      I'm confused now

I did forget, re: Faraday's scene system:

being able to edit poses on the fly.

scene/undo - remove your last pose (great for those times you prematurely hit enter!)
scene/replace - replace your pose with an edited version
scene/typo - silently replace your pose with edited version (good for fixing minor typos)

This way, the scene/log is already clean and ready to go when you're done. No need to edit after the fact. Again, goes back to my hatred of log editing.

This is a hard animal to do as the only 'real' weather code that's publically available is Keren's weather system. Which is out dated, cumbersome, and coded like vomit. Did I mention the vomit? The buckets of horrible vomit?

This is the thing that makes me sad. I'd love to see a good weather code someday, but I'm also aware what a bitch it is.

Code that highlights/colors speech a different color omg so amazing.

AresMUSH does this. I'm not a fan of it personally (it trips my ADD so it makes poses more distracting), but I know a lot of people who use it. You can also customize the colors used.

      Faraday's scene system.

It's similar to the temproom system many WoD games use, but the added features it has are lovely. Being able to see what scenes are open with 'scenes' (with things like 'location,' scene summary (if set), etc. Being able to jump into a scene with 'scene/join' all help in getting access to RP (I don't have to wait for someone to send a meetme, for example).

The system also allows you to define a scene/set (so no need to page each incoming person). It has a scene/log on the fly, scene/repose (so people can either read the full log to catch up or just the last few; again, no need to page people to catch them up!).

When the scene is done? I just make sure the pertinent info is filled out and I can post the scene.

      Done.

It allows me to focus on the RP. I love it. I probably love it the most out of everything she's done with AresMUSH. And I say this as someone who hates logging more than anything.

ETA: Almost forgot. As an ST, the scene/emit function is great. It sets apart my ST poses so that even in a big scene, everyone knows 'oh hey, ST pose!' so it's not lost in the rest and I don't have to do any especial formatting myself.

    • RE: RL Anger

Little miss evangelical classmate has taken on a level of crazy that has pissed me off and is going to lead to me filing a complaint.

After ignoring our rough draft document all weekend for the script (due Tues night) and then today saying she'd 'check in' after bible study, she added a single scene. One not in the outline (and of course, we're not required to stay strictly in the outline, but still: it keeps us all on path).

      So a bit of backstory:

o Week 1, we all write our own outline in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, or mystery for a 5-7 page script. Anything we want!
o Week 2, we're put in groups of 6 and we must take our week 1 outlines and craft an outline from them for a 5-7 page script.
o Due to 2 people being delayed and the utter ridiculous nature of the assignment (having had zero structure and such a spread of concepts) we opted for a 'tabletop style' where we each picked one character and figured out reasons for them to all end up in a bar and on the same 'job.'
o So we have a guy from my sci-fi setting (far future), one from a near-future sci-fi, one from a fantasy, and then this chick's "horror" story (female) character. The three guys are hired by a 'Broker' who has intel from the female character. It's jenky, but fine, it works. Gotta fit the assignment, right?

So today, I check in on the rough draft and to add some scenes in, help clean/tighten up in places, offer thoughts, etc. As you do. And there I spot a scene. It's outside the outline, but hey: we expected that. Except this scene has one of the male characters telling this woman's female character: "Shut up, you're just here to look pretty." It's way out of character for the guy. It makes no sense in context. It's just shoved in there. There's no lead up. There's no conclusion for it. It's just a random bit of sexism.

      W.
      T.
      F.

It's written in her color (we're using GDoc and we each have a 'color' to work in, so we know who is commenting/writing what at any given time).

The section is already highlighted and in the GDoc comments, to the right, two of the guys (the group is 4 guys, then me and this other woman) have already WTF'd it too. They had -- carefully -- called it out as being very out of place and that they were not at all comfortable with it, so good for them.

But I am still like: what is wrong with this woman?! (And yes, before anyone tries to question: I did verify via edit history that she wrote it and someone didn't just use her color to fake it being her.) Between her constant passive-aggressive behavior about wanting us to change things based on her religious 'ethics and morals' or her friend in the group (who has still done a grand total of nothing) and now this, I plan to file a complaint.

I can guarantee however that when I clean up and write the final version of the script in Final Draft for upload... that scene ain't gonna be anywhere in it.

@collective said in How should IC discrimination be handled?:

How willing are you to put a notice on, say, your log-in screen and/or very prominently in your OOC rooms/Character Generation rooms that says something like, 'By playing here, you agree to deal with as many racist, homophobic, sexist and other slurs as your fellow players feel like slinging as long as that slinging stays IC.'

People said no to putting a notice prominently on the login screen / OOC room that said this. Which is extremely heavy-handed. Ganymede's suggestion, however, was to put something much more reasonable within poli-

Why am I even trying? This is you moving the goalposts again. This is you, yet again, saying something wildly unreasonable, having people react, and then acting the victim when it comes up again later. This is precisely the behavior I am talking about.

You don't want a reasonable debate.

You don't want a constructive discussion.

You want to make people look bad. You want to find excuses to retain whatever ideals you've constructed of 'gamers are bad' (in which case why are you playing?).

And I've quoted you, yourself, so you can't pull another 'don't put words in my mouth.' You didn't ask if people were willing to put a notice in theme, you asked if they were willing to put a (rude, tbh) notice on the connect screen or OOC room, not as part of policy or similar.

If that's a problem and unwelcome, I will be happy to close my user account here and go away.

I had rather assumed that this wasn't the old WORA and that constructive conversation is allowed and welcomed, even when people don't (and won't) agree. If not, obviously I'm in the wrong place.

I've been watching you say the same things in different ways for the past number of days while constantly adjusting the goal posts.

      That's not constructive.

I'm shocked people keep trying because it's abundantly clear that you care very little about their opinions.

And things like this aren't helpful at all. They're intended to try to get an 'OMG WE'RE NOT OLD WORA AT ALL HOW DARE YOU' so you can sit back and go 'Oh dear why are you so riled up and emotional now?'.

People have been trying to be constructive, helpful, and even find middle grounds. You have steadfastly dug your heels in. They're not going to jump to your side of the fence, so it may be time to step away.
