One friend replied "Leave early!" to my concern and it took everything in me to go, "My quadraplegic brother is at the mercy of his caretakers with young children and literally ~can't~ leave earlier. He can leave when his caretakers get him up, my father arrives, and he gets packed. A 2+ hour detour means they arrive around midnight, and blocked roads in both directions means not only my brother but possibly my father might miss my sister's wedding."

Is the venue limited to a specific time? If not, could they see about moving the start time back a bit to account for the fact that weather conditions are making the current plans a pain?

It's not necessarily ideal but it might be an option.

      Be enjoyable to RP with.

VR RP sounds both terrifying and fascinating.

I'm totally ready for my Cyberpunk meetsReady Player One virtual world.

@derp The far more relevant problem to solve is how to get more new people involved than are fading away from the hobby, rather than how to get back the bunch of old farts who got too busy to play after adulthood smacked them in the face.

I mean, you might as well ask how to get people back into telegraphs and steam engines. There'll always be a small market for them just based on tradition or the fact that they're rather quaint, but in an age dominated by graphical games that are becoming more and more interactive as VR/AR gets better and cheaper, this is ultimately a losing battle.

Though to be fair, Ares has done a pretty good job of getting things nice and modernized. I haven't explored enough of Evennia to know if it does the same, so cannot comment. But the answer is 'make it feel as close to a modern experience with gaming as you can get', and I just don't know that 'type out literally everything you're doing for five minutes while you craft the perfect pose even though you could have re-enacted it in fifteen seconds, tops' is the way of the future, no matter what.

I feel like this could be branched into its own topic. "How do you make social RP enjoyable and unique?"

I think this is less to do with the setting of the RP and more to do with the character you are RPing with.

I've had lots of RP in a diner. Some of it was excruciating. Some of it was wonderful. It depends on the actual content of the conversation. If we're discussing how work is going and otherwise just being the same kind of drones we're forced to be iRL, I will likely find it excruciating. If I'm building piles of hash browns and gravy to represent the different layers of reality and why Paradox likes to screw with you by throwing in some hot sauce, it's probably gonna go better.

It all depends on the personality of the partner. Not the setting or whatever. A good talk can be more intense than a good fight.

The problem seems to be finding people more than finding something to facilitate gameplay. All the MUSHers grew up got mortgages and kids and have no time for RP.

To be fair -- a good many of those that grew up and got mortgages and had kids are now getting old enough that the kids are moving out of the house and they're staring at retirement soon, so.

      Bright side?

A lot of people never knew about it because it's a fully voiced and edited version of SAO made by fans. It is freaking hilarious.

I liked the first season -- season? Or whatever, of SAO. The guns and stuff in the follow-up messed with me.

Holy crap. I just re-read an old thread on EnWorld about the differenced between D&D editions and how they cater to players who prefer Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War. A particular point of contention was that in Combat as War, being pragmatic and fighting dirty wins over being heroic, which didn't jive with players who wanted to play heroic PCs. The Combat as War folks pointed out that, if victory in a fair fight is a sure thing for you, there isn't anything heroic about it to begin with. There's nothing more heroic than challenging the forces of evil to a fair fight in a CaW game. Your character will be wishing for death by the end, but it will be very heroic.

Pretty sure he is talking about this thread and it is a very good read, if very long.

Part of the responsibility of playing a powerful character in a collaborative medium is making a conscious effort to share the spotlight.

I've always thought that superman should be more restrained than what he usually ends up being. It's like --

If you twitch twelve muscle fibers you're gonna break his jaw but if you twitch fourteen muscle fibers you're gonna take his head off so maybe leave it to the folks with a bigger margin for error yea?

Look at Star Trek. They spent hours every week reliving Shakespeare plays, old books and visiting beaches in a holodeck. The only place anything actually interesting happened was deep space far away from the federation.

TBF both Picard and Discovery show that's far from the case. Lots of black market and criminal activity with general civil unrest. It's a refreshing change of pace.

Honestly, this makes me want to recruit for a pack of werewolves who live in some ramshackle duplex on the west side of town, and all work for the alpha's food truck, and the alpha most of the time is just trying to get everyone fed and feeling okay for the next mission because FOR FUCK'S SAKE WHY IS THE CLIATH EATING PASTE?!?

@greenflashlight hmmm, that got me thinking ... behavior in captivity, meaning less freedom of association with others, generates domineering behavior.

      Is human civilization effectively captivity?

Yes. Most political scientists and sociologists start from that premise and work outward. Submitting to power for survival does that.

"The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design." -- Friedrich Hayek

Ah, yes, Hayek: the thinker that Keynes fucked up in a letter so badly that he abandoned the study of economics and took up political philosophy.

That would not surprise me in the slightest.
