Yeah, this is all reasonable. I mean, I have a scene that has been sitting idle for literally over a week now because of RL drama I have been attending and I feel bad even giving daily updates.

When you say "went and split a house," do you mean "bought a house with my mother so that there would be a place for my nieces to live relatively safely and grow up with in a moderately-healthy environment"?
Rented a big farmhouse for all those latter reasons, and so that I could save up for a down payment on a mortgage.
Pretty sure at this point I am just going to let her have this place and go find somewhere else, closer to work. Nieces are cared for by their mother again, who got her shit together.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
So I don't usually like to talk about my personal life, but I need to vent, while we're talking about law and such:
Around the end of September, my mother and nieces ended up needing a place to live because she was divorcing her husband of ten years. My mother and I have had a rocky past, and I was wary of this move, but I also needed to try to save some money, so I figured it would work out for the best if we just went and split a house.
Backstory: My mother used to be really highly addicted to pretty much anything that came in a pill bottle. And just so happens to be a hateful vindictive demon who only cares about herself and her own interests when she's high. To the point where her ex husband beat me with a baseball bat, breaking several of my ribs, and then stabbed me repeatedly with a screwdriver when I was sixteen. She told the police that I was being mean to him, and just took off and left me in this town.
Fast forward twenty years. She's been sober for a decade, went back to college, got her degree, and works as a teacher.
And the first thing she does with her newfound freedom? Hook up with the guy that she cheated with while married to the psycho that tried to kill me. Starts taking pills again. Meanwhile, he's a psycho alcoholic too. Ends up beating the hell out of her, and then showing up at our house to threaten us and my siblings, then pulls a gun just in time for the police to arrive and tackle him to the ground.
And she's been defending this man ever since. Changing her story constantly. Taking more and more drugs. Getting more and more hateful and vindictive. Just like before.
Last week she informs me that he is getting out of jail, and she's had his community corrections approved for the house we share.
I immediately file a restraining order on top of the protective order I already have, so I don't have to do the Dance of the Dueling Orders.
I show up at the hearing. The prosecutor recognizes me, because of course. We've all worked closely together. Informs me that he'll be calling me as a witness, since I am there already. Well. Alright, that works for me.
I get up on the stand. He asks me if they've violated their no contact order. I tell the truth -- that she's been in touch with him pretty much every day since December 26th and tried to get his community corrections moved here.
Prosecutor asks that he be held without bond on a charge of invasion of privacy for breaking the order. Judge agrees.
The mother-demon has been sending me harassing, threatening messages and generally just screaming at me for going on two days now. Hundreds of texts.
My bosses, who are awesome, know that something is up. And this shit is starting to eat up my spoons, so I am less productive than normal, even though I am still productive. I can sense them getting annoyed, though.
I don't want to talk to them about this. It's none of their business that my family is bugnuts crazy, and I don't want this room full of attorneys to use their special attorney magic to go digging into my bugnuts childhood. This isn't a thing that I should have to share with them.
And yet, somehow, I foresee this being a thing that is going to come up before my name and title get dragged through all the media escapades that can come with this. Which I am pretty sure is in our ethics code.
Goddamit.

For me, the weird part was the refusal to allow a co-signer not in bankruptcy to affirm and take over the debt. That’s a no-brainer.
Capital One is shady as shit. I had opened a card with them and went to make my first payment, and my bank freaked out like 'hey we just noticed this big transaction from this brand new entity so we put a hold on this payment until you give the ok'.
Capital One called that 'fraudulent activity' because it put a hold on it and shut down every card I had with them.
They're seriously bonkers.

I really appreciate Tyler Hoechlin's take on Superman
To me he will always be Derek the Hot Werewolf.

This one is soooo goooood.

I am glad they are doing something that hasn't been done with Superman before (actually exploring a future with a family).
I have not seen the show in question, but didn't they do this in Superman Returns?

We're still renting a house at a relatively low rent since it can only be hiked so much per year, and we moved in before rents went crazy in the GTA.
My landlord sent us a notice to evict in order to move in, which is the only legal way he can do so. However he also wants to show the house since if he can find a buyer he'll cash out instead.
What this actually means is that, during a pandemic, we have to let multiple groups of strangers wander into the house with 24 hours' notice. I'm working from home, which impacts me. The landlord has even asked on a number of occasions if we 'can do something about the dogs' or if we can just not be at the house at all when people drop by.
On top of it the idea that we have to move out to let the landlord move in unless he finds a buyer to be in bad faith, since the eviction date was set under the assumption a buyer won't be found. I can't simply wait to find out what the case will be, since then there might not be enough time to find a new place.
Also I hate moving in general but that's a separate peeve altogether.
I mean, that seems like pretty solid grounds for fighting it.

@il-volpe If the carrots are a feature ingredient, or a layer in a layered dish, disks. If they are a component ingredient, strips/julienne. If it is a chunkier dish, like a soup or stew, diced.
Easy.
The correct answer is roll-cut triangles.

RE: Developing a WoD Codebase for Ares
Oh good not a double post!
Also also:
You could actually create a whole new file under the same root command. So you could tie it into 'look' and just add certain conditions, and then put that file somewhere in the .gitignore
So that it doesn't get the auto-updates from Ares.
So you could do like:
look/auspex
And then in your new file you could create something like:
cmd.root_is?(look), cmd.switch_is?(Auspex)
And since it's in the same -- class? I forget which one. I think it might be class. I'd have to double check. It'll just pull it automagically but keep them in different files.
Or something like that. I forget the exact details because it's been a minute and I'm rusty but there is a way to put your custom stuff in a place where the base Ares stuff won't cry but also tie it into base Ares stuff.

I don't know if you'd have to adjust the base plugins to allow for Umbral/chimerical/whatever stuff.
I mean, this could be a problem if you think about it purely from the way that MUX did it.
Fortunately, there is no need to do that. You could create just a new subsystem with commands for those things and values assigned to the character object that pulls them like any other attribute.
auspex/check
Or whatever.
Then it's just a matter of lining up the appropriate command with the appropriate data point on the character bit. Doesn't have to be in the desc plugins at all.

@rucket said in So I read a thing... [Yet Another City of Hope Hate Post]:
So the problem with WoD and Ares is not Ruby, it's that if you want to properly put WoD into Ares, you're going to have to recode many of the plugins that come along with Ares. On the surface this may not seem like a big deal, but Faraday is really good about adding new features to Ares and keeping it up to date with bug fixes and the like.
So that means every time there's an Ares update, you're going to have to go in and make some changes line by line to keep everything working with a lot of the custom code.
Don't get me wrong, I think Ares is great, but I don't know that Ares is the best solution for a large scale RPG system like WoD/CofD just because there's going to be a lot of work after the initial coding is done to keep things maintained.
I mean, is there though? If you're not using the FS3 plugins, it's all pretty barebones. I can't think of anything off the bat that would conflict with whatever custom game system you wanna put in, or anything in barebones Ares that would need to be recoded in order to make it work? What kind of roadblocks are you running into?
Also given that we've turned to game development we should probably move this to an appropriate place.

I am living in hope for the day when someone makes WoD (properly) available on Ares. I think that will revolutionise it as we won't be beholden to the same tired old cadre of people to build and run them.
I'm actually working on this, albeit somewhat half-assedly. Trying to learn Ruby right now, but I managed to learn MUSHcode and even get MUX's fucky implementation of regular expressions figured out, and this cannot possibly be that much harder.
Please do not disabuse me of this notion.
From what I have seen, Ares is surprisingly straightforward once you figure out how all the moving pieces play together. Once you have an overview of how it works, adding new stuff into it is a snap. I managed to create an entire DnD-style polyhedral dice roller that can take roll comments the first week I was tinkering with it, and if I can do it, anyone can.
