I self advocated! And it worked! I was a little blunt and firm and used words like 'unacceptable' and 'would like to be acknowledged as a partner in my mental health' and 'I don't feel like you are listening to me'. So now I will soon get non stimulant ADHD meds!!!

(because Kaiser hates cannabis and wont gimme stimulants lest I am 100% pee test clean. And as a former daily user who is overweight, tha'll take a bit.)

      So, woo!

I have a medical cannabis card because my state does that. It's for migraines, but I've seen strains labeled as helping with ADHD and thought that has to be nonsense (I have ADHD and have been on and off stimulant medication since diagnosis in high school.) HOWEVER as it turns out the pot for adhd thing wasn't nonsense. There are a few that get me focused as anything, and can get a ton accomplished.

yeah it's not nonsense at all. I smoked pretty regularly for like 15 years, and during that 15 years I had no : insomnia, migraines, anxiety (the cause of the former), and didn't feel nearly as overwhelmed/scattered.

I stopped smoking and everything fell apart

Yeah I have anxiety with ADHD (and migraines) I think they are a frequent team. Pot helps with both to be honest, and I'm hoping it will let me cut down on the prescription meds required to make my brain even mildly useful.

There was maybe once a small window in which a site could have been built that was WORA for adults. That ship has long since sailed

If that genuinely turns out to be the consensus and the majority here feels like they are not obligated to ever change and grow up...LOL, good luck with that. It's been a trip MSB, but I'm too old for this shit.

We are ALL too old for this shit. I mean maybe a few college kids stumbled this way I don't know everyone's lives. But I would wager that most of us are wayyyy to old to behave the way we do here. I'm embarrassed for all of us, including myself.

Terrible? No. I think he's altogether a better hockey player than Crosby, but Crosby doesn't have a problem with playoff slump and has led the Pens to cups. Was Ovie worth the $124m? His regulation stats are great and he's put butts in the seat, though his regulation stats are on a downward trend, as well.

Justin Williams gets paid extra money because he performs well in the playoffs. Why shouldn't Ovechkin get mo' money if he can play well in the regular season? If you don't play well in the regular season, no one gives a shit about your playoff abilities.

Ovechkin averages well over a point per game in the regular season (1,035 pts., 921 GMs). He has won countless awards. In the playoffs, his stats are different, but are still damned good (90 pts., 97 GMs). Backstrom is in the same general boat: about a point per game in the regular season, but only a slight drop in the playoffs.

Last season, Braden Holtby couldn't save them. The year before, yes, the scoring was suspect. But in previous years, the defense was permitting too many shots (over 400 in 2 series is awful).

Frankly, the Capitals simply aren't good enough. That's it. Crosby and Malkin look like the saviors, but it's really about Murray, Sheary, Rust, and all of the other lesser-known players that made the Penguins champs again (I mean, do you know Nick Bonino is?). Who does anyone know on the Capitals beyond Ovechkin and Backstrom? (addition mine: this was posted in 2017)

Hahah okay I just realized this thread existed because it popped up again but C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS <3. It's okay to make mistakes.

Yeah, it totally works as a useful tool without all the structure and language that I think creates too much parallel between designing/running a game for fun and paid professional work.

I've also liked both in work and online the "No is a complete sentence" strategy. I think for many women it can be very challenging to try: just flat out "No." without explanation or softening. I feel really weird whenever I try employing it but at least I'm practicing.

Look, stop projecting your loathing for your own team and just recognize that Dan Snyder will never put together a Super Bowl team ever, all right?

Look, this is Washington okay? We'll never win any championships because none of our teams can go deep into the playoffs. Caps? Oh let's have an amazing season and then get kicked out in the second round. Nats? Great season, first round exit. Skins? Haha. Wizards? Yeah we'll get that 8 seed and then get knocked out in the first round.

But we might. <3. We might win two in back to back years! Who can say? (This is the funnest thread to notice after all the posts are ancient)

I didn't talk to people OOC much, because I don't get like to get down like that. Experiences will vary, and if you are playing a terrible male character I think you get away with a lot more than if you are playing a 'terrible' female character.

    • RE: Hobby-related Resolutions/Goals for the coming year... ?

I set goals for myself year-round, so new years resolutions are a time for checking in on those goals but not weighted terribly heavily. Like others have said most of those goals are RL based but hey, I can come up with some MU* related ones.

      1. Be chill! If I'm feeling super stressed, don't log in to play unless I am sure that logging in will be fun and escapist.

      2. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Over and over again! Things that seem or feel malicious often are not, so instead of assuming the worst, just assume the best.

      3. Focus on making sure that I'm chasing my own fun and providing fun for others in equal measure. Ideally those both just happen without extra effort put in but put the effort in until I get better at it.

      4. Stay away from gossip and negativity. Nothing takes the wind out of my sails faster than hearing people gossip about other players OR about staff OR about a game. It makes me super frustrated sometimes, because once I've heard all those negative feelings I can't unhear them, and then it gets super uncomfortable. Like do I keep playing with someone who I know has a super low opinion of staff/the game/etc that I am playing too? That's not much fun. I want to play with people who love the game they play on, and the toxic grumpy gossip does nothing but make ME feel grumpy too, and resentful sometimes of the players who have been kvetching. It's basically just a huge buzzkill, the same way hearing co-workers kvetch about the building or the admin or central office kills my "Lets touch young lives and make the future better wooot!" moments.

Thats all I have so far!

@Kanye-Qwest said in A Lack of Imagination:

I also have an internal narrator, and it narrates things like I'm a character in a book, sometimes. If I'm not DOING something, my brain fills the silence and dead space with actual narration. I can also hear this narration in different voices. I was doing mantra meditation for awhile but just saying the word mentally, and the voice I was doing it in kept shifting. Jeremy Irons, Cate Blanchett, Tim Gunn...

Me too! Also if I've been reading something for a while, my internal narrator's style changes, not a voice that I hear but like writer's 'voice'. So if I am working through One Hundred Years of Solitude my inner monologue is super fancy, and that is my most recent example.

      @kanye-qwest said in Favorite Minigames:

fun minigames: actual minigames. Games of chance that people can play IC/gambling, that has a slight chance of reward. Gambling games, darts/knife throwing/games that can record a list of "high scores".

Outfit code, so you can build up pretty outfits and switch between them without having to group them all into different bags and wear them.

      fortune telling/tarot style code.

Anything random that generates rp, like the @randomscene code. I think @randomseethe would be cool, too, could let people roll dice to pick who to snark on in journals. I don't know if this would be better or worse than everyone ganging up on the FOM. Would be fun in the right hands, though.

Anything that produces something, like gardening or animal breeding

IC gambling/poker has been fun on other games. Even with really buggy code, just the posing gambler poses and people handing out cards, fun fun.

@randomscene is the best but I kind of support @randomseethe too. I mean not really. But kind of.

Enthusiasm. Positivity. Those are things I look for in people to play with. If someone loves their character/the setting/the game, they bring that to their rp and their ooc interactions, and its awesome.

Conversely, negativity is such a drag to be around. If a player is clearly disgruntled or burnt out, that shiz is catching. If a player is gossiping oocly about how much the game/this staff decision/the staff personally/xyz players personally are the WORST EVER then I am not at all interested in engaging with them further. Don't drag me down with you.

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

So I was reading this article a few days ago, which I can't find again or else I'd link it here.

It was talking about a service people with ADHD can subscribe to where they are matched with a partner basically, and they use checking in before and after tasks for accountability and motivation.

So like if you and your partner decide that you both have something you want to get done that you've been putting off and you want to do it for an hour starting at 4pm, you check in beforehand and say what you are planning to achieve (your partner can even help you break down the task if it seems too big) and then they do the same, and after the hour you check back in and share what you did.

I thought it seemed like a potentially helpful tool to have. Then I thought, why pay for a service when there are a bunch of people I know who struggle with ADHD on a message board. We could buddy up with one another!

If anyone is interested in trying it out, message me!

So, I wanted to share this, as I married someone in the neurological field and learned an immense amount of shit about myself, and ADHD. Because I had ADHD when ADHD was just some bullshit excuse for your kid not listening, or something. So no meds. Never. Not ever. Because ADHD isn't real.

      Obviously it is.

Anyways, I've done really dangerous jobs, and also have been in construction for like, twelve years now. Big construction. Personal residence. I fucking love it. It all makes sense to me, and best of all: ADHD isn't a flaw, it's a merit, in construction and the very nature of the job helps curb your inattentive behaviors. Forgot what you were doing? No worries, champ. Contracts and job scopes are written down. Having a tough time? No problem: Everybody is embracing the suck and eating that same shit sandwich. Tempers flaring? Yep. They do that. Get the fuck over it and move on - what's this?! Everybody is getting over shit as fast as you?

So, apparently construction is full of peeps with ADHD, which makes sense, because we all rage against those fucking engineers.

Teaching preschool is a good one too. Special Ed preschool is even better. His IEP goal includes something about attending to instruction for stretches of 3-5 minutes at a time with fading reminders. ME TOO! I promise we will be constantly switching activities and not just for your sake, oh no!

    • RE: The Unfindable Flag

Hey, the first thing I have felt compelled to actually write a post about. Nifty.

I am with @Derp 100% on this one. Unfindables in your home/private space, so people don't know who are coming over to meet secretly with/plot the end of the world with/have the sexy times with....all good. But out in say 'the waffle house' the flags stay off. People need to know who is there so they can join rp, or plan there own rp in a different place, or whatever. Usually players are pretty reasonable I like to think (hope?) and if they enter a scene and do the standard 'mind if we join' but PC A and PC B are having an intense conversation they don't want overheard, or round 2 of one they started the other day, they can say "Actually we're sort of doing a thing that isn't easy to join now, do you mind leaving us to it?" And while it is POSSIBLE that player C could scream PUBLIC PLACE YOU ARE SO MEANNN, I've just never seen it happen.

Harassment is something else altogether, but all the more reason for it ON in public places. If Player D is someone you want to avoid, you want to know where he is if you are considering joining a group scene so you don't have to play with him. If Player D is stalking -you-, that's something the staff can handle.

    • RE: The Unfindable Flag

I don't think we disagree @Thenomain, not on the fundamentals. The only real issue I have with the unfindable flag is when people gather in public places to participate in private rp, and hide out with it. If a place is public, its public. There are conversational ways to work it out if you want to run a scene there for a limited group that don't involve the unfindable flag, and there are ways to abuse the unfindable flag -in public places- that for me, just make having players use it willy nilly in spaces that are open to all -not- really fostering genuine role-play experiences. BUT as I said, I say that from a different place from lots of games, one with -plenty- of private areas in which to be unfindable for whatever reasons one chooses. If I truly felt that organic rp experiences were ruined by people not being able to hide out from the +where list while rping in a public garden or a tavern or whatever, I'd reconsider. I just have not yet come across these scenarios. If I do, I'd reconsider.
