@jomomomo There is a certain irony in posting that with PITCREW boldly next to your name. It was opt in and invisible unless you sought it out. Seems a reasonable compromise from an admin perspective, and it was very well-labeled.

RE: Discord Moderator Academy?
@warma-sheen I’d say that everything you’ve just stated is an excellent reason why it’s good to consider different (and perhaps new) ways of managing communities. A good mod team would be approachable and someone who would listen to community members who have issues. Being able to be professional and compassionate while communicating in doing so is a skill that takes time to develop, but it also develops best if it’s acknowledged as a skill to be practiced and engaged with critically.
Not every principle in the academy might work for a specific situation, but I think they’re all worth at least considering and being able to explain why one might’ve gone another way with their rules and guidelines. There’s nothing wrong with having a private, “my living room, my way” community for example, but it tends to work best when that expectation is set from the start, I think.

RE: I needed some Cyberpunk Red in my life
@kumakun This looks really gorgeous!

RE: Discord Moderator Academy?
@enoch The academy covers that too, it’s wild:
“While bigger servers may be less lenient when it comes to second chances, banning people over minor infractions may not always be the best approach. Your responsibility is not just to execute punishments, but also to weigh out the severity of the infraction.”
Honestly, it’s very nicely written.

RE: Discord Moderator Academy?
@tempest No, but you’re right that mental health and mindfulness are very important! It’s especially hard to engage with others constructively and fairly when your internal emotional state is out of balance. I think we’ve all had moments where something tough was going on in our lives and we overreacted or acted disproportionately as a result. At least I have.

RE: Discord Moderator Academy?
@misadventure Clear guidelines for behavior and clear consequences for violations that are uniformly and fairly imposed are definitely in there! It’s good stuff so far, I haven’t finished reading it all yet.

RE: Discord Moderator Academy?
@tempest You know, I actually think it’s one of those evergreen topics always worthy of discussion. Being staff is hard, and doing it well based solely on figuring things out yourself is even harder.
Fostering a community where people feel safe discussing things is a good goal for any day of the week, IMO.

Discord Moderator Academy?
Has anyone checked it out?
https://discord.com/moderation
I feel like there might be some useful tips and practices for anyone adminning a game or community, but I’m not sure how specific to live chat groups it is. Plenty of us get into the staff side of the hobby without any real experience at it, so maybe a free and accessible training program might be handy for some of us.

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
The day I have 80 friends is the day I throw myself one hell of a party.

RE: Spirit Lake - Discussion
This is a small plot-driven game and always has been; it's never been sold as anything else, and the intended playerbase for that kind of game is never going to be huge.
The fact that MSB gave it the hug of death and swamped the place in like 80 character apps in one day is just the way it is; if they'd set a hard slot cap, I don't think it would've stayed open past noon, much less as late as it did.
Evidently, there's thirst for a modern fantasy game, so I'd say get out there and make 'em.

RE: Considering Arx? Consider Deepwood!
@Cupcake Samantha has the respect and friendship of her liege lords at both the ducal and high lord level, and is generally a trusted and well-admired leader within her faction.
Anybody who doesn't like that can go suck eggs, for all I care.

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
@Bossi There are plenty of bad guys who aren't Thrax. Most of them serve and/or are demons, or some other flavor of evil. Just because Thrax culture is naval and jerkface-y in some regards doesn't make them "bad guys".
I tend to be wary of theme factions with an overt Asshole Excuse. Unsurprisingly, they tend to attract a lot of people who want to play assholes and be able to point at theme as a 'get out of trouble free' card.
YMMV!

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
@icanbeyourmuse I can think of half a dozen reasons why someone might ICly try to stop someone else from doing something. Maybe it was dangerous and your character wasn't equipped/skilled/prepped for it and the other person was concerned. Maybe they have a secret IC agenda that leads them to want you not to do it. Stopping someone ICly can be entirely in character, and if there's a conflict, it's probably best to work it out OOCly rather than assuming the other person is just a dick.
@Arkandel I think it's important when running PRP (which I've done a little of and look forward to doing more of) that the GM remember that they may not know everything that's going on with the player characters in the scene, too. Speaking for my own alt, who I think is involved in the one you're running, it's just really bad timing right now. She watched her fiance die horribly like two weeks ago ICly, and she happens to be a Composure 5 cool customer, so she's going to be generally far more low-key about anything that isn't immediately threatening her life. I've been hoping to loop some of the vassal PCs in to give them more to do, because I think that's important for characters in a higher ranking noble house to do when they can, but so far it hasn't shaken out much. (I'll keep trying, but I have a business trip coming up that's going to nuke my availability.) I am very sorry if you feel as though it's not going well, though!

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
@Arkandel 1. I have an alt that swears and one that doesn't, really. I think it comes down to class and occupation and general nature. If you're hanging out with posh people, they probably don't drop profanity quite as often.
- On the clothes issue, I have an alt that's noble and ICly has a lot of clothes, but honestly, I can't be bothered. I'll often pose her in general sorts of things -- ie, she's in a "loosely-woven blue summer dress" -- if I'm not wearing coded clothes. I hate DB bloat and managing objects and if there's no code benefit to wearing it (ie, it's not armor) then it's basically just ornamentation. As long as I'm not sticking her in fancy seasilk and dawnstone outfits, I figure it's okay. Who honestly cares if she has fifteen different dresses? No one has time for that stuff.

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
@Olsson It's one of the few games I see that has stuff going on both when I go to bed (midnight PST) and when I get up (8am PST). It's pretty active on quite a few 'weird' timezones.
