@Sparks This is the first game I encountered ascii desces in a weapon or item. I find that...strange, actually. So I would not expect ascii art. Just...a good desc.

I didn't understand it in Firan either. To be honest, I find most ASCII art ugly as sin. Only a few pieces have made me go "Oh, wow! That's neat!"

Speaking of things with "Horizon" in the name, Horizon: Zero Dawn MU*. Add some MUD elements with the exploration and hunting. MUSH elements with building villages. You have survival elements and a pretty flexible metaplot to work with.

Ehhh, it's not a wildly divergent evolution of the word in this case. The Romans were kidnapping the women to marry them, the Romans weren't going to take no for an answer when it came time for the marriage ceremonies, and the Romans were definitely going to consummate the marriages, so the Rape of the Sabines still is an accurate title for the historical event.

We have more information freely available to humanity than ever before. But it's just as important that we know how to understand the information presented to us. How to separate out the facts from the opinions that are presented as 'facts'.

And liberal arts degrees, the programs that are most devoted to critical thinking, are becoming less and less regarded. I have met so many engineers who consider themselves smart and can math and design an efficient system thoroughly, but couldn't figure a way out of a wet paper bag. Get them out of their wheelhouse and they are complete morons.

    • RE: Good or New Movies Review

      DUNE

So I don't do movies much. As I have stated previously on the forum, I find most movies post-2000-ish to be crap. I really don't like movie theaters, and prefer the comforts of watching a movie at home on the rare times that I will watch a movie. So it takes a lot to get me to watch a new movie, in a movie theater, on the day of its release.

I give it a 3 out of 5, or a 2 out of 5 if they never make Part 2. They better make that Part 2, as I would give the 1984 Dune a 2 out of 5 as well, and it would be a pretty terrible if, after 37 years, they can only match it. Which is all a shame, because it had the potential to be a 5 out of 5. The acting, soundtrack, and CGI are all superb. It opens really well, and I was all aboard to love this movie.

The biggest issue is they rush things. They've already decided to split the novel into multiple movies to do it justice, so why the rush? And I got the feeling as I was leaving the theater that I'm not alone in that assessment, as a bunch of my fellow audience members were saying things that indicated that they were completely lost and confused about what they just saw.

Anyways that's all I have to say that isn't spoilery.

      click to show

There is a natural stopping point for the first movie, if you're going to split the book. How does one fuck that up? How does one get to the end of the battle that upends everything, the perfect place to stop things and leave everyone breathless and on a cliffhanger and they go "Naaaah, let's drag this out for another hour and have a bunch of slow story-heavy scenes that will drain the pacing and would be better served as early scenes in a second movie"? How does one come to the conclusion that that's a good idea?

You have Lady Jessica and Paul escape from the three stooges and shelter in a tent. You have the scene with Leto gassing the room. You go back to Jessica and Paul getting out of the tent and starting their journey, playing up the 'They survived and are continuing their adventure onwards' vibe, have some heroic-ish music and shots of them moving through the desert, maybe some pans of the desert to show the adventure is just beginning, yadda yadda. Then you cut back to the gassed room with the hazmat suit guys entering and the reveal that BOOM the Baron isn't dead, Motherfuckers! Roll credits.

HOW DOES ONE FUCK THAT UP!?

Then with all the time they would have saved by not having an hour of stuff that should be in the second movie, they could have used it to spend more time focusing on the character building and world building. At no point do they explain how shields work. Hopefully you are able to figure it out from watching, but I doubt it, because it's a little vague as to why some things get through a shield and other things don't, as the things getting through seem to be moving at the same speed as things not getting through.

Whose the dude with the diamond on his forehead? Turns out he's really important, but you wouldn't have guessed that from all of the two scenes he is mentioned or shows up in before the moment he becomes super fucking important. Who are mentats and how do they work? You get one scene of eyes turned up into a skull to convey that they are human calculators and, if you don't spot the fact that he and the Harkonnen mentat both have the same taste in lipstick and turning their eyes up into their skull, you won't know that they're both from the same order.

Wait, Jessica is a concubine? We only get that revealed by a passing comment of "I should have married you" by Leto just before the attack and a comment by the Baron while he is gloating over Leto, which could leave an uninformed viewer thinking that the Baron is just slandering her by calling her a "concubine" like calling someone a "whore." Maybe we should have dived into that a bit beforehand to establish the social order a little more and explain that concubines are a thing.

Speaking of poor Jessica, I commend her actress for a good job of conveying the emotions the character is going through, but the fucking Director decided that all those emotions should be of a hysterical woman who appears to be just shy of completely losing it. Not what I would expect of a disciplined Bene Gesserit who can command the minds of the weak. How about some scenes showing how badass, awesome, and/or loving she can be to offset all of her simpering and hand trembling?

Then there's the Baron. They got Stellan Skarsgård, who does a phenomenal job, and they have a really great leitmotif for him. He just oozes villainy. So how about a little more screen time showing off him being a villain, rather than just talking and plotting and sounding menacing? In the 1984 Dune, the Baron in his first scene murders a random servant for the lulz while raping him. That's a bit much, but that at least tells you that there is a pretty high bar for awfulness that you can safely limbo under in portraying how brutal he is.

      @ganymede

They have to have all those words, so that there is space on the page for all the ads that take forever to load, keeping you from seeing the recipe.

Because it's getting that time of year:

      Ominous' Chili

      Ingredients:
      1 lb. of ground beef
1 lb. of ground hot Italian sausage
      1 large onion, chopped
1 to 2 poblano peppers, chopped
      1 bell pepper, chopped
      1 tablespoon of minced garlic
      2 packets of chili seasoning
1-28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes
1-28 oz. can of diced tomatoes (or 1-14 oz can of diced tomatoes and 1-14 oz. can of diced, fire roasted tomatoes)
1-16 oz. package of sour cream
1-32 oz. box of beef stock (Not broth. STOCK!)
1 to 2-14 oz cans of red kidney beans, drained
1-14 oz. can of black beans, drained
Oregano, cumin, paprika, and ground chipotle pepper to taste
Shredded sharp cheddar cheese and sour cream to top with

      Hardware:
      Stockpot
      Range
      Refrigerator
      Tupperware

      Directions:
Brown the beef and sausage in a stockpot. Remove the browned meat to a bowl, leaving the grease on the bottom. Saute the onion and peppers in the grease, adding vegetable oil if there is not enough leftover grease for sauteing. If you like other veggies in your chili (I sometimes use corn or celery) add them with the onion and peppers. In the last 30 seconds of sauteing add the minced garlic and finish sauteing. Add the meats back to the stockpot along with the first seasoning packet and stir, letting the seasoning brown just a touch.

Add the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, beef stock, and second seasoning packet and stir again. Add the 16 oz. container of sour cream and stir with the aim of breaking up and incorporating the sour cream. Add 1 drained can of red kidney beans and the drained can of black beans and stir. If it's not bean-y enough for you, add the second drained can of red kidney beans and stir. Season with oregano, cumin, paprika, and ground chipotle pepper (or cayenne pepper) to taste (I usually do 2 to 3 tablespoons of oregano, 1 to 2 teaspoons of cumin, 1 to 2 tablespoons of paprika, and 1 to 2 teaspoons of ground chipotle pepper without accurate measurements) and stir.

Bring pot to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about an hour, stirring occasionally, to reduce the water content to a desired consistency. Let cool and store in fridge overnight. Serve reheated next day, topped with shredded sharp cheddar cheese and a dollop of sour cream if you desire.

Recipe makes about 10 bowls of chili, aka lunch and dinner for a week for one.

      Ominous' Extra Ominous Chili

Add the following to the above recipe:

1 chipotle pepper, chopped, from a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
1/2 to 1 teaspoon of gochujang paste
Any extra chopped peppers you care to add. (Jalapeno, serano, habanero, etc. Just pick one type to add and add at most 2 peppers of that type to make sure you don't overshoot on your first batch.)

Add the chopped chipotle pepper and the extra peppers in with the other peppers during sauteing. Do not breathe the fumes too heavily during this step, unless you have nostalgic memories of pepper spray like I do.

Add the abodo sauce and gochujang paste while adding the tomatoes and beef stock.

Serve to those with asbestos-lined tongues.

Note: I like a spicy chili. I would consider my main recipe to be in the mild to medium range. However, if you need your chili squarely and for-sure in the mild range, use a medium or mild Italian sausage, keep the poblano but use only 1, and do not add any ground chipotle at the end.

Note 2: If you want your chili meatier, add an extra pound of ground beef, if you're fine with more of the same, or ground lamb, if you want some differing flavors and textures.

Ominous' Two-Hour and Really Fatty Macaroni & Cheese
aka Ominous' Take on His Mamaw's Mac & Cheese

      Ingredients:
1 to 2 boxes of large elbow macaroni (Pour the uncooked macaroni in a deep casserole dish. You want enough to fill it between one-third and halfway up, as the macaroni will expand once cooked to fill it the rest of the way.)
0.5 to 1 stick of butter, melted
      1 cup Cheez-Its, crushed
      Salt
1-16 oz. box of Velveeta, half cubed and half sliced
1-16oz. block of extra sharp cheddar cheese, hand shredded
0.75 to 1-5 oz. wedge of asiago cheese, hand shredded
2-12 oz. cans of evaporated milk (EVAPORATED Milk not Condensed Milk. If you use the latter, you're making macaroni & cheese flavored room temperature ice cream.)
      Pepper to taste
Ground cayenne or chipotle pepper to taste
      Ground dried mustard to taste

      Optional Ingredients:
      Crumbled blue cheese to taste
4 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled
Heavy cream instead of evaporated milk, if you want to be really fatty

      Hardware:
      Stockpot
Lasagna Pan, Deep Casserole Dish, or Dutch Oven
      Cheese Grater
      Cheese Slicer
      Range
      Oven

Fill a stockpot with one gallon of water and salt heavily. Do not use less than a gallon of water when cooking pasta. Do not use unsalted water when boiling pasta. Otherwise, the dead Italian grandmothers of the world will haunt you.

While bringing the water to a boil shred and cube all the cheese. Also melt the butter and stir it with the crushed up Cheez-Its. Once the water is boiling add the macaroni to the pot and preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook the pasta to al dente, then drain the water, saving 2 cups of it.

Add one can of evaporated milk, fresh ground pepper, ground cayenne/chipotle pepper, and ground dried mustard to the pasta, then slowly incorporate the cubed Velveeta, shredded cheddar, shredded asiago, and optional crumbled blue cheese (it does not take much blue cheese to add a little something extra, so go light with it), while stirring, letting the residual heat of the stockpot and pasta melt the cheeses. If it gets too thick, add the second can of evaporated milk. NOTE: The sauce will continue to thicken even once you're done, so aim for a little soupier than you want the finished product. If you need to throw the pot back on a burner to finish melting everything, that's alright, but do it on a low heat. If you need more liquid than the 2 cans of evaporated milk, use the saved pasta water in small additions.

Once all the cheeses are added and melted, throw in the bacon and stir. Pour the deliciousness into a lasagna pan, deep casserole dish, or dutch oven. Top with the slices of Velveeta and then the Cheez-It crumbles. Place the casserole dish in the oven and bake until the top layer has browned lightly. If it blackens, you didn't use enough butter on the Cheez-Its to fry them. Remove from the oven and serve. Makes enough to give heart disease to a 10-20 member family gathering.

Note: Again, use evaporated milk or heavy cream, not condensed milk. Condensed milk or more accurately Sweetened Condensed Milk has had sugar added.
