    • RE: RL Anger

I have chronic major depression, and I don't think I have ever asked for material things to help with. Normally I just ask friends if they could hang out or talk. I think the most demanding thing I have ever asked is listening to me vent and whine about how much things suck. Which I will agree is a big ask, so I understand when people decline the honor of listening to me complain.

I would very quickly cut out people who do from my life. I'll lend an ear or a hand, but I am not giving you tickets to a concert. How about I give you a ride to a therapist instead?

However, given how Monte Cook and Co set up so many gates to control how the inward flow of cash, I imagine an IS MU could be cease and desist fodder.

Take one part Mage: the Awakening, and add one part Mystic Empyrean and one part Planescape. Shake vigorously and pour into an overpriced glorified tabletop RPG box set. Add dashes of Kill Six Billion Demons to taste.

While very surreal and imaginative, you could convert it to numerous systems to avoid the C&D.

    • RE: Oh the Horror

@misadventure Absolutely, but that's true in most D&D games I run too. In a horror game the threat to the PCs shouldn't even be from a regular Joe NPC. If you're referring to the use of NPCs as allies for the PCs, then, yes, they should 'nope' right the fuck out the moment things get spooky.

Addressing the monster of the week vs. long running plot question, a mixture of both seems ideal for most MUs (and TV shows). Having a long term threat running in the background is good, but you need to throw the occasional, easily averted Boogeyman at the PCs now and then to mix things up.

FFX is also the last Final Fantasy that I played. At least, all the way through. I started on others and gave up on them after about 10 hours.

      @LWhiskey

I do take it all to be happening linearly.

I am aware of the logic behind it. It still bothers me. Much like the fact that I can't stand cottage cheese. A lot of people like it, but I think it is nasty flavored snot balls.

And Colossal Cave Adventure was based on Mammoth Cave and D&D. So we have Kentucky and Wisconsin to thank for MU*s.

    • Inhuman Conditions Board Game

Ever wanted to do some heavy-duty roleplaying in a Blade Runner-esque universe? Did you like the video game Papers, Please but thought it wasn't intense enough? I are you really into the cyberpunk zeitgeist and can't get enough of it? Then I have just the game for you.

If you don't want to watch the video, a quick summation - this is a roleplay heavy game social deduction game for two people, simulating what is essentially a Voight-Kampff test. One player is the investigator who has five minutes to ask questions of the other player who is the suspect. The suspect could be a human, a patient robot, or a violent robot. In addition, the suspect has some sort of job they hold, which helps them get into the role. Humans have no special rules, other than the job they have.

Patient robots have a tell that they have to adhere to, for instance the video gives the example of "You cannot express any opinions at all. You can only express observable facts." If the patient robot messes up and expresses an opinion or decides it's worth the risk to violate the rule to throw off suspicion, they must, at some point before the end of the round, perform the penalty action, which both players are aware, such as "You must insult the investigator."

Violent robots, on the other hand, have three tasks given them, two of which they must complete. Once completed, their programming snaps and they kill the investigator, before going on a rampage. This is demonstrated in the game by the suspect slamming their hands down on the table suddenly.

If two player social deduction sounds like it's up your alley and you think you can do the roleplaying without feeling awkward, maybe give it a look. And if we ever have a cyberpunk game with androids/replicants, can we get it incorporated into the game?

Also, Shut Up and Sit Down is in the middle of one of their pledge runs. If you like board games and funny review videos of board games, give them a watch and maybe chuck a few dollars their way.

Rolling can give you direction. Mark Rosewater, Head Designer for Magic the Gathering, has "Restrictions breed creativity" as one of his tenets. When you're just writing a scene where anything can happen, you may not think of something interesting to write. Add some chaos and randomly determined events and now you have something to work with possibly sending you in a direction you would never have thought of.

    • RE: Interest Check: Ancient Greek RP

Ancient Greece is a pretty large theme. What exactly are people looking for? Gods, Heroes, & Monsters a la Clash of the Titans, Hercules, and Xena? Warring city-state politics like in the Rome series, the Troy movie, etc? Or do people want the dangerous ancient world surrounding the tiny points of light full of adventure as in old-school D&D, Conan the Barbarian, and so on?

      Except the police.

As I was recently told, you can't be a socialist and a law enforcement officer, even though I was both until a few months ago. There's actually quite a few socialist organizations, particularly gun clubs, that say you can't be a member if you are in law enforcement. Military is fine, but no police. The police are The Man vs. The People. The military is The Man vs. Some Other The Man, and anyone who fights The Man is good, even if it's The Man.

@rucket said in General Video Game Thread:

It's a pretty big issue in the games industry, but some journalists have been working hard to try to shed light on it. Even though they get shit on by fanboys for doing it. 😕

Jim Sterling of the Jimquisition talks about it a lot and has for about four years now, but they aren't exactly a mainstream games journalist anymore.

EDIT: Whoops. Didn't realize I misgendered, and I knew better. No excuses.

      Ars Magica

      X-Files/XCOM/Delta Green style game

A proper DUNE-ish game with space politics/space Senate

A tribal game with the focus on the primitive characters trying to survive the wilderness. Generally tribal character tend to be some weird 'other' race/nation in an otherwise normal setting, a stand-in for elves.

I kind of want to combine the tribal/survival theme and Ars Magica with a bit of Mouse Guard, having the focus be on a group of knights in the remnants of humanity surrounded by a wilderness full of monsters. The knights patrol the border, escort merchants and such with the help of the last order of mages. There could be occasional forays into the lands lost to the wilderness, exploring the ruins of civilization, so people can get their dungeon crawl on too.
