RE: Automated Adventure System
Just in general, can confirm there is a place for squishy nerd characters who can, say, solve riddles. I just got stuck at some places that required jumping or climbing or other physical things.
Also? Having a healer is big-time helpful.
I felt very useful as a non-combat character.

RE: Let's talk about TS.
@peasoupling said in Let's talk about TS.:
Could this be humor? It sounds like humor. Which is a thing in some romance novels!
The book didn't take itself too seriously!

RE: Let's talk about TS.
I recently read a romance novel that referenced 'his eggplant emoji'. Like, 'his pants were tight but not so tight his eggplant emoji could be seen' or something along those lines.

RE: Character 'types'
Usually the tragic aspects of my character's' backgrounds never even come up ICly. They just colour how the characters react to things and their outlook and motivation. I find someone who is interested in poking in another PC's past is kind of rare.

RE: How to use Potato MU Client
Thread necromancy!
Is there a way to change the default location of Potato's logs? I keep mine over in subfolders in my Documents folder in Windows 10.

RE: Character 'types'
Most common:
- Earnest scholar. Often shy. Sometimes stammery. Librarian types, but the good librarian that wants to help you find what you're looking for and helps empower people. Sometimes has a tragic/traumatic past, but is least likely to of the archetypes on this list.
- Sociopath that can fake seeming normal at least most of the time. Tragic/traumatic past. Doesn't let people see the 'real her' very often, because it is scary. Straight-up murderer or at least completely capable of it.
- Standoffish person, likely with resting bitch face. Guarded for reasons (see: tragic/traumatic past) and generally hiding a good person under all that. Cares more than they let on. Prickly. Rude to people to help keep them at arm's length.
Many of my characters are sarcastic.

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
I got annoyed at @investigate and @helpinvestigate being two different things yesterday, but at least now I know they're two different commands.

RE: Coming Soon: Arx, After the Reckoning
Thread necromancy, but I am suitably impressed, so:
I really like the depth of the plot on Arx. There's stuff to do on the surface, but once you get into investigations and @clues, there is so much lore to be discovered. Crazy amounts of it.
The code is definitely a pain in the ass, but I have also found that people are quite friendly (in general, and also in helping people with the codey aspects).
Anyway, what I'm getting at is if you're put off by the code (as I was), it's worth poking into anyway.

RE: Questionably viable character types and tropes (tangent from staff ethics convo)
Re: playing assholes, sometimes it's gonna be just a short scene. The characters meet, someone is grumpy, there's an exchange, interaction ends.
I usually warn that my PC is grumpy and it might be a short scene/it is OK if it is a short scene. People seem to be OK with this, and I have had many a short, fun scene.
Maybe later they run across each other and there's a longer scene. Maybe later there's some reason they have to work together. As long as I'm clear that I'm not an OOC asshole, that still works.
Please note that 'not an OOC asshole' doesn't mean I'm hugging and glomping people or even talking to them much. It just means being polite and thanking my partner for the RP (something I almost always do anyway). Most people I play with know dick all about me, and that's how I like it.

RE: What locations do you want to RP in?
I like a grocery store. It's good for a random meet. Everyone needs groceries.
Okay, most people need groceries.

RE: Raising Baby Gamers
Finished Smarter Then You Think! I quite liked it, thank you for mentioning it. It put into words a lot of things I have thought about technology and communication.
I never used to read non-fiction before I started working in the library. Our website supports lists, and I am adding this to my Non-Boring Non-Fiction list. Gracias!

RE: Incredibly Stupid Question Re: Object Limits
Is anyone else curious as to what prompted this?

RE: Raising Baby Gamers
I wonder how much circulation our D&D books get at the library. I should check! Running a gaming group might be a good idea. Thanks for these posts. I just put Smarter Than You Think on hold, too.

RE: PC antagonism done right
My ideas for playing engaging antagonists boil down to three things, essentially:
- Cultivate a good OOC attitude. Be nice. Be friendly.
- Be willing to poke fun at your antagonist.
- Don't shit where you eat.
I managed to do it once, and it was really really fun and I'm not sure I could ever have the right conditions ever again. I really appreciated how other players supported me by playing up 'don't mess with that guy'.
I hope it was entertaining for others as well. I think it was? Anyway, I couldn't have done it without the support of other players.
