An hour of looking through old pleadings because someone told me I needed to find the appropriate language in order to request a subpoena against another attorney.

...the statue specifically exempts me from those requirements because I'm doing a case involving ineffective assistance of counsel.

Can I use one of those pre-filled forms someone was on about?

If you're opposing counsel, by all means, use them exclusively.

It sort of low-key blows my mind that there are adults who are just... happy. Like, I know nobody is happy all the time. That's the nature of life. But the idea of having, I don't know, a week or more when you just feel okay?

I literally don't remember a single example of that since December of 2010. I've had streaks of a few days that stick in memory. But a week? Weeks? Months of nothing but appropriate moods and responses to things?

Today is not a great day, dearly beloved.

They don't offer CLEs in my specialty, because nobody does it. 😐

That's not, strictly speaking, true, but training on post-conviction and habeas happens every few years, not every few months--and I'm at the point now where I know everything that's in the materials from the ones I have access to.

ETA: I am thinking about involving myself in the ethics and discipline part of the bar, though, so if I go that route then there's plenty to learn.

I think the general idea is that he needed to be free from original sin which is apparently sexually transmitted.

Eh, Mary's Immaculate Conception arguably takes care of that. But yeah, theology chat can go elsewhere. 😛

It can catch out issues that have been smoothed over by tradition. Like, w/r/t Mary, the Greek parthenos usually gets translated as virgin, but it can also mean young woman, and the Isaiaic prophecy of the Messiah says he will be born of an almah, a Hebrew word that usually means young woman of childbearing age. This is a useful thing to know in conversations about things like the Virgin Birth (though I started to profess the Virgin Birth a couple of weeks ago on different grounds).

      @Derp

Our paralegal doesn't do motion work. Only attorneys and law clerks do, and we do them all from scratch, with small and obvious exceptions like headers and closings/certificates of service. We've caught out the state on multiple issues because they were responding to typical discovery requests instead of what we had actually requested.

I very strongly disapprove of doing motions by rote, but also work in a discipline where motions are everything.

Different things. Pleadings are a kind of document filed with the court.

I'm kind of iffy on Hart. If I want devastatingly literal I can just pick up the NASB (or, frankly, spend a week brushing off my Koine and going to town on it myself).

In general, I'm a fan of the NRSV. The NIV is nightmarish.

It's the New Testament of the Bible annotated by Jewish scholars, among them Amy-Jill Levine, who is well known in biblical studies circles for being both a practicing Jew and one of the most pre-eminent New Testament scholars in the world.

As you can imagine, she had a relatively rough time getting to where she is now. One place forced her to teach OT, even though her specialty has always been NT.

Anyway, it's full of brilliant annotations that really help Christians understand the text better while making the New Testament accessible to non-Christians (especially Jewish people, but everyone) in a non-proselytizing way. And it has fantastic essays on the historical developments of Jewish thought regarding various aspects of Christianity.

It should be required reading for every Christian.

Yeah I called him out on it. "You mentioned bond reductions, which I can see working really well with the bail schedules which are common. But the jurisprudence is moving toward declaring those unconstitutional--how do you automate something that requires analysis of multiple factors?"

His response was something along the lines of "the program gives you multiple choice and provides text boxes for you to type your arguments in, and then inserts it into the motion for you."

Yeah, bud. Bet that leads to great and organic writing.

Oh, I'm not focusing at all. This is awful.

This guy is currently arguing for complete automation of literally all pleadings. I'm deciding whether or not I want to ask questions if he asks for them.

Lawyers in Louisiana have to take 12.5 hours of continuing legal education each year.

My being myself, I went into yesterday with 8.5 hours left. 3 hours of online education later, I'm at a 5 hour CLE marathon today.

I've been livetweeting it, because the other alternative is some form of action that ends in -cide

Is there any evidence of it being intentional? 24 is young, but people can and do die unexpectedly at that age. DVT was actually my first thought when I read the article.
