The one thing I didn't particularly enjoy was how much focus there was on the descendants of the original Team Avatar

Well, team Korra isn't connected. I'm ok with the people who saved the world instilling decent values in their kids, but I do wish it were someone other than Tenzin in the spotlight.

Like Lin. I like Lin. Have I mentioned that I like Lin?

      @Derp @Ganymede

When my friends started the firm and I joined up, we knew we'd lose a lot of cases as we learned the law, but we resolved that we would make the state bleed for every single fucking inch.

This case is my little baby straightrazor. When I submitted it in state court last year I got a call from the DA saying that it was longer than what he was used to.

Then he ended up giving me book recommendations because he's a liberal whose favorite magazine is the Atlantic and he was surprised to see the word "Kafkaesque" in a memorandum.

It was a weird phone call.

The district court just ordered the DA to produce the entire trial record of the case.

      I am positively gleeful.

We may not win but now some poor bastard has to do what I did last year.

I actually like the slightly older tone of Korra, mostly. The big issues I have with the series are:

Jumping to modernity the way they did made everything feel whitewashed, even though republic city has a strong SEA aesthetic.

Further extension of everyone sounding white (ATLA did this with its main characters which had some unfortunate implications)

I don't have a feel for the characters. By Book Two of ATLA I knew who Sokka, Katara, and Aang were. I only have that sense for Korra (and maybe Tenzin?).

      THEY DID SUKI DIRTY

On the bright side, though, Lin Beifong is a fucking treasure.

I'm sort of stuck on season 2 of Korra. It's not bad. I actually like the characters in some ways more than in ATLA; I outright prefer Korra to Aang, and Bolin's general silliness is a relieving replacement to Sokka's near-constant (yet somehow usually endearing) inanity. It just feels... idk, less focused? I know it had a rough development history. ATLA is a solid 10/10, and season 1 of Korra was an 8 or a 9. Season 2 is more of a 7.

I think it's that they aren't giving the characters space to breathe. ATLA was full of characterization, which made it "slow" at times but made you care about the characters! I haven't seen a "Tales of Ba Sing Se" yet in Korra.

Also I binged ATLA in two weeks so maybe I'm just TVd out for now.

OR MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE THEY SHAFTED SUKI WHO IS AMAZING IN ALL THINGS

Yeah but apparently those are "original works" that have something to do with fandom, like Austen-style Regency romances, and they'll potentially delete stuff that isn't related to a fandom (though they claim nothing is deleted solely for being an original work).

A friend told me about AO3 and I mustered up the courage to register and only now I am learning that they don't technically accept original works.

I don't know how to write fanfic.

No I really honestly 100% agreed with everything you said, and I'm beyond stoked to see the new film for exactly the reasons you describe. I just wanted to gush about a really arresting scene, haha.

ETA: I never watched the sequels, so how are they dealing with the whole, uh... replacement thing that happens at the end of the original film?

@insomniac7809 said in Good or New Movies Review:

So Candyman (which is, to be clear, one of my favorite movies ever made) is a story about black people who have been abused, but as the Other. Our viewpoint is the white middle-class academic woman menaced by a black bogeyman.

So, while I agree with literally everything you've written here, I watched Candyman for the first time last month, and I want to point out that I had to pause and rewatch the scene early on in the film where the protagonist (I don't do names. No memory) gets information from the black janitorial staff in the university. Because that scene absolutely nails the profound awkwardness of that kind of interaction, where the white woman is nice and blissfully unaware of how cautious the black staff are around her. I know it's a weird detail to be fixated on, but it was quite seriously my favorite scene of the film.

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

@insomniac7809 @faraday I really, really do appreciate the help y'all have given me. I should emphasize that the reason I'm even thinking about this is because after talking to me about my energy levels and behavior my psychiatrist said I likely have ADHD and has suggested medication. So I have been diagnosed, I suppose; I just have to figure out to handle it.

And doubting my validity is not so much a personality trait as it is my entire personality at this point.

So a lot of this is just sort of trying to focus on what I'm dealing with, because I'm profoundly ignorant of the illness.

Thank you so much. My psychiatrist suggested it as a diagnosis but we're still exploring treatment options. So I'm trying to learn more healthy management techniques online.

      @Auspice

Yeah I've already been diagnosed with mild to moderate OCD though thankfully my issues largely are not compulsive. Unfortunately the obsession is sometimes still really bad (contamination, specifically poisoning, at times veering into outright paranoia).

It sounds like I have this thing, or at the least some form of executive function disorder other than OCD. Now I just have to figure out how to deal with it.

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

Thanks @faraday and @Auspice . That is a helpful explanation.

But now I'm more confused, lol. I rarely miss deadlines, but that's because I tend to cram at the very last minute. Maybe I have mild ADHD? Talking about this is really weird because, like... some of the stuff is me to a T. All the time. Messy (more like absolute disaster) of a room, papers always everywhere, scattered, disorganized, make fancy plans and never go through with them, always forget to send thank you cards, bills pile up, etc...

But, like, at work? I'm fine at work. I mean, I get distracted constantly, but I get shit done on time, even though deadlines are really stressful. I don't know if this means I just have a mild form of the disorder or if being undiagnosed for 30 years means I developed coping strategies that let me function albeit miserably.

It is also 5 in the morning and I have spent the past hour and a half to two hours looking at ancient churches in England. So... there's definitely some executive function issues going on.

      BUT LOOK AT THIS CHURCH

Eh, it's in a spot that's not easily visible and that I don't care about. The doctor recommended some creams and I'll try them but honestly I don't care about a weird discoloration that nobody sees.
