    • RE: The Work Thread

Interviewed last week with a position that I really want. Really liked everyone I spoke to. They're doing reference calls now, and I heard from one of my former managers that she finished her call and that they seemed to really like me and liked her answers. (And that they asked specific questions, not just generic ones, which speaks well of them and their hiring practices.)

      plz plz plz

    • RE: PC vs Player Assumptions

Some people just have a talent for picking up clues and putting together answers. I've known players who become infamous for coming up with potential answers that the GM goes "damn I wish it WAS that." It usually doesn't really have anything to do with intelligence or inside information; some people just have a knack for it. Maybe a certain level of experience with a GM might give a player an instinct for their particular style, the way that playing a bunch of point-and-click adventure games gives you an instinct for how a certain series might approach/construct their puzzles, but that's just familiarity.

tl;dr some people just have a knack for it

It is probably worth noting that some of the people who write and/or consume fanfiction featuring child abuse (and many types of abuses) are people who actually experienced similar abuse IRL. It's not an uncomplicated issue.

This and this is how I laptop in bed, by the way. (Sprawling on my stomach is uncomfortable for me for whatever reason.)

Almost entirely from my Macbook on Atlantis, either docked at my desk into a monitor/keyboard/mouse setup or in bed with a lap desk. Occasionally I check in on my phone via MUDRammer.

The Kotaku article about Anthem's development was fascinating. What a debacle.

" But I was also born without whatever lobe of the human brain causes "ah, jeez, am I staying true to Previous-Player's vision?" anxiety.

That's basically what's keeping me away from playing Roster Characters. I get hella anxiety when it comes to things like managing other people's NPCs or playing roster characters that have been played before.

I will say that Arx has rules against people trying to make you play a certain way. If you do pick up a roster and someone tries paging you all 'omg the last player wasn't like that' you can kindly tell them to fuck off.

More than having rules against it, I've also never had the experience of anyone even trying. My first PC, Ronja, had a small family (parents, basically) and they were both overjoyed to have someone step into the role, even a total stranger, and were incredibly welcoming and supportive. My second PC, Ember, is the head of a house and the experience was much the same, as both people who were under her and people who are above her were like "hey, can we help you get situated, do you need any IC history info," and so on.

It definitely happens on occasion, but I think that the fact that it's baked into policy -- and that staff is very responsive to getting word of it happening -- keeps it to a manageable minimum.

@Joyeuse Yeah, I definitely get that. They'll likely open up OC applications again once the current freeze on stuff is finished, but right now it's only roster apps. I'll say that the game very purposefully cultivates an OOCly forgiving culture in terms of flubs and slip-ups in regards to theme so that people aren't punished for OOC ignorance, and that people are really responsive regarding game questions and such. But I definitely understand whenever someone goes "Nope, this game is just Too Much for me to jump into."

All that I've played so far is City of Hope and Star Wars: Age of Alliances, so that's the only experience I've really got, and basically speak to my sorts of setting preferences. Space opera and small-scale urban fantasy or paranormal mundane. I'm totally open to anything, though, so long as the setting isn't something impenetrable or rooted in a huge property/IP that has to be read into to make a character fitting into it.

Arx is NONE of your preferences -- it's medieval/renaissance fantasy, big game ranging from small-scale to big, an original property but with a lot of lore to discover -- but if you do ever check it out, I'm very active on the channels for help/questions as Aleksei and would be happy to help you out! (It's the only game I'm currently playing on and thus the only one I can speak to, SORRY.)

@Joyeuse I will disagree with Ghost's point: if you haven't had issues as of yet with other players such that you have reason to feel someone's focused on you, playlists can indeed be a source of fun reunion. I think people should be thoughtful about what they reveal to strangers on the internet, obviously, but on the other hand I don't think a practically brand new player needs to excessively cover their tracks. I'd say most (not all, I know) players don't really encounter issues with having their playlists up. You can definitely choose the route of being a relative enigma, some people do, but I don't want you to feel scared off of a more personable route. There are safe ways to do it, especially if you have good boundaries.

I'm pretty sure I watched Dark Crystal when I was little, but I can't really remember it; it wasn't a staple of my childhood. Would I still enjoy it without the childhood love?

I did! His ending was pretty sad. I had kind of seen stuff coming with him, he was way too knowledgeable about what to do in the casino palace, so I knew something was SKETCH about him. But that didn't change my enjoyment of the way his arc played out.

Coke has a whole museum there, not just bottling and whatnot. It's got the historical caché of having kind of invented modern soda, which is probably the reason for the difference.

@Macha You probably need an employment lawyer if you can swing one. I know enough to be pretty sure your employer needs to enter into an interactive process about this: they can't just say "nope, can't do the accommodation you want, so the conversation is over." Their reaction indicates they don't have a very good understanding about what their responsibilities are.

Eh, Wolverine's shortness was pretty wrapped up in how he was read in the comics for years. People were peeved about Jackman's height when he was cast, but it was forgiven pretty readily with the first movie when his acting proved his suitability.
