Hey, every now and then you need dodge as a stat as a politician.

VR RP sounds both terrifying and fascinating.

I still long for some sort of truly modernized MU* code that would let you, like, have triggered mood music for events and ambient weather sounds. (Other than the GM just saying 'Play this youtube playlist!')

RE: Good Anime
Edited the OP to add convenient links to the best source to legally stream each recommendation. (Except Wolf Children, which is currently in iTunes jail for a price where you may as well just buy the DVD at that point.)

RE: The Worst Thing You Have Done in this Hobby Thread
Oh boy, where to start.
But mostly, trusting someone with things about me only to have them turn around and use that knowledge against me in ways that were emotionally and sexually manipulative, and exceptionally illegal.
Fucked me up for years, and made me reject my bisexuality until my 30s because I associated half of my attraction with being made a victim.
Fuck you very much, you fuck.

RE: Good Anime
I need to rewatch Utena. It was absolutely a watershed production for LGBTQ+ and I remember it fondly, but I'm not entirely sure how it would hold up nowadays. Much like my anxiety with the rest of the classics, I hold them in high regard and I'm not sure how much of it has to do with the fact that they were good or just good enough at the time.
It's hard to revisit classics when the seasonal lists are just so dang packed.

RE: Mourning a character, how do you do it?
Gosh, yes. I can think of nothing more lame than losing a character to completely mundane threats. My example has always been 'bandits'.
Very real risk of this happening in an armed robbery in real life? Definitely. But having it happen in a story is quite the anticlimax unless handled with absolute precision.

RE: Good Anime
Yeah, sometimes a show is just the right show for you at the right time. It doesn't mean the material got worse, just that the lens through which you view it has changed.
...doesn't make it suck less, whether it's old movies, old anime, or old games to realize that you now think some of the things that gave you the most joy in your formative years can no longer bring that same spark.

RE: Good Anime
I really agree with that chart, frankly! (Not as much as my list, but I'm biased by my own methods.) It's picking out more-recent anime that you can find on streaming, and that you are more likely to have a conversation with in the broader anime community (which has a median age of somewhere in the twenties, iirc.)
It's easier to get people invested with material that's current and benefits from more modern animation improvements, speaking from personal experience with gradually easing people into anime.
There are some timeless classics, but shonen trash (which I love) is one of those things that if you're not watching it as or around the time that it airs, it tends to age poorly.
Recommending older material to a new fan to go watch Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Robotech, or Yu Yu Hakusho is like telling a movie fan to start with Casablanca and Hitchcock Movies. It raises the barriers for entry considerably. (It's why the 'Classics' list in the OP is so truncated.)
...now, that's not to say you can't say to someone who's really loving newer material that hey, there's this classic you'll probably love, but I've found it's more successful to hook folks on the shiny new stuff first.

RE: Good Anime
Odd Taxi just keeps getting better and better. I was lukewarm on the first episode and let it pile up a bit, but goodness am I glad I kept going. The character writing is just incredible, and the subject matter is mature without diving into the deep end of edge.
I didn't expect the show about the walrus taxi driver to be the one that put me on the edge of my seat more than any recent thrillers I've watched. It's so grounded in the reality of the world that it crafts that the stakes feel so damn high when even the littlest wrench gets thrown in, and its scathing but empathetic ode to the self-destructive nature of a gambling addiction was a complete masterpiece.

RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.
I am also apartment hunting.
Add in a currently existing lease's move-out notice policy of 90 days, and you enter a completely new level of hell.
Ugh.

RE: Good TV
the fucking socko bit is amazing and brutal
My personal favorite was White Woman's Instagram.
And of course, Welcome to the Internet, which as the YouTube comments aptly state, is like a villain's song, when the villain knows it's already won.
Could I interest you in everything, all of the time? A little bit of everything all of the time?

RE: Good TV
@testament said in Good TV:
I was never much into the She-Ra remake on Netflix(The Voltron was better, fight me)
Voltron had moments. Moments that it mostly squandered, and ended with a splat.
ANYHOW.
That was still a fun trailer, really took me back! My brother had a lot of those toys so I inherited them by proxy when he outgrew them. I watched drips and drabs of the show, but it was pretty samey in tone (I mean, all cartoons were at the time, really), so I'm interested to see if this iteration will shake anything up or just be 'More, but with a higher budget.'

This is fair. If an artstyle doesn't jive, it's hard to get past. Gravity Falls come to mind, for me!

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
Honestly, this is just one of those things where you don't know until you know, and then you wish you didn't know.
I'm addicted to anxiety medication. I don't abuse it, but I can't quit it. I tried to taper off for like 6 months, and was left such a shivering, awful mess of a human being that I had to go back on, and I despise every minute of it. If my supply were cut off, I'd find ways to not feel the way I had to feel in withdrawal.
Prior to this? I felt a bit like you. Mostly getting it, but with that tiny voice of judgey-judgey.
Now I get it. I wish I didn't.
I would encourage you to attempt to empathize without ever having to relate. As much as it's improved my worldview to see how this shit really isn't someone's fault, or a failure or being weak-willed, I wish I didn't find out this way.

RE: Health and Wealth and GrownUp Stuff
My horse is low. There is no tone on the internet. Sorry if it came off that way. I was intending, 'Hey, I know what you mean, having had such a voice. But try to keep that voice small.'
Certainly not an attack or lording over you.
The internet sucks.

RE: Good Anime
More than happy to glow about that show at length. Everything is so tightly written in that show. Already rewatched it once and the attention to detail is fantastic.
Especially love the translations of the accompanying Radio Dramas that are being released that all focus around ***=Spoiler***
click to showLots of additional context, and an even deeper layer of easter eggs.

RE: RL Anger
Fire bad.
Tree pretty.
... but tired Buffy quotes aside, dunno. Fireworks are pretty. Can't say I've ever found them much of a racial divide. Other than PATRIOTISM bros liking loud noises, which is more of the politics section.
ETA: Fireworks Displays are pretty.

RE: Good Anime
Hoo, boy. So. In concept? Sword Art Online's initial arc is conceptually fine. It's just tinged with the author's immaturity, which is evident in the pacing and the treatment of female characters. The Aincrad arc was tense and exciting, despite being objectively stupid. It had stakes.
The decision to cut that short to explore other MMO settings was frankly foolish, and something I'm pleased that the author is trying to remedy in his 'remake' of the Light Novels, which essentially go floor by floor.
Still not thrilled with the trashy harem-esque elements, but I am basic and do enjoy the 'If you die in the game, you die in real life' trope, as a long time MMO-player. I enjoyed it in Hack/Sign, and I enjoy it whenever it comes up. I just wish it didn't often come hand-in-hand with an overpowered self-insert protagonist and a slew of tropey conquests to fight over him.
