I think the big problems with bleed come when the player doesn't like themselves, but they like their character. That's when shit gets really weird and personal and things get bad blurry.

The new season of The Crown is fantastic. I love how they humanize all of these horrible people just so we can be disappointed in how horrible they are.

@Roz I totally cry at good emotional RP. I think that's fine, as long as you know how to process that sort of face-leaking. I was once doing a one-on-one game with the man who is now my husband and I was being a bad student and scening with him while I was in a boring class in college and of course he chose that moment for my character to have an emotional reunion with her father and I had to TOTALLY PRETEND LIKE I WASN'T CRYING IN ASTRONOMY CLASS.

@Ghost There are also more aware and trauma-informed gamerunners, as well as feminist approaches and things like Nordic LARP, which are rules-basically-nonexistent and entirely based on emotional play. It's more than Cam and whacky-bat these days, and even whacky-bat games that aren't toxic are learning to address the emotional health of their players.

@Ghost LARP has changed a lot philosophically since 2002. Now, there are all sorts of structures in place and best practices for managing bleed, including debriefings, warmups and cooldowns.

I've never read his stuff. What does he write?

In LARP, we discuss the concept of "bleed" -- your own emotions being influenced by your character's emotions and vice-versa. I maintain that we experience the very same thing in MUing, even if our interactions aren't face to face. Instead of just going "KEEP IT ALL SEPARATE, DON'T DO THAT", I think it would be a good idea to address the fact that it does happen and discuss healthy ways to handle it, so I started this thread as a spinoff of a discussion on a thread in the Pit. What are the ways you handle your bleed? What advice do you have for others who might not handle it as well?

@Macha Must have been late refunds, probably ones I could have contested if I had RECEIVED THE FUCKING NOTICES, but at this point, I prefer to just eat the amount and keep my spot on the platform.

@faraday I wonder if the hobby ever was that much bigger than this, population-wise. I wish there was a way to track demographics.

@Macha It was just super stressful because I had zero idea what was going on AND it was $857 total.

@Auspice For someone with a serious cat allergy, that is still enough to make them very seriously ill. Hypo- just means less, and the proteins in cat dander have a strange reaction in the body of some people who are seriously allergic to them, causing more severe reactions with every exposure. Furthermore, a single exposure can lead to reactions that last for days, or even weeks. For many people, there is NO safe level of cat exposure.

i am so glad that the people i consider celebrities are so relatively obscure and accessible and i can do things like take online dance classes with them. i needed those endorphins today.

@Macha Apparently the email server of my old university was eating some VERY IMPORTANT EMAILS. I paid them what I owed them for late refunds and switched to gmail.

WELP nothing like getting a message less than an hour before Shabbat on the weekend of Yom Kippur from the company that you teach through that they have cancelled all of your classes because you apparently owe THEM money???

Making that hard decision to put down a character you love... and having that decision pay off in spades. I love it when everything just clicks.
