RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Except that this is not a job.
If the example that you can work with people who you don’t get along with, then that’s great and we could use more of that.
Solving this is kind of a community thing.

Edit:
You know, Tempest, for someone who says they’re not demonizing Faraday, you are using her as the straw man for things people have been saying about Wora for over a decade. That is a little demonizing. There are a lot of things that’s could be said about the logic without saying that her defending her viewpoints counts as dominating the thread, or mentioning her at all.
You’re tired of the discussion. We get it. Breathe.

RE: How do you construct your characters?
To quote Douglas Adams, I stare at a blank screen until my forehead bleeds.
Sometimes I make a character based on an idea.
Sometimes that character idea survives character creation.
Sometimes I just say that I’m going to play somewhere and hope to find a hook. These are the worst characters I’ve made.
Sometimes I put a lot of time and planning with others about a character and have the staffer flip out about a minor detail, where I flip the table and make a character just to get one done and end up playing it for five years and adoring it.
Sometimes I have a sense of my character after five years.
Usually I just wing it and hope people have fun with it.

Repetition is a normal risk of getting old no matter what you do.
The power of you having seen these beats before is that you can help educate people who haven’t.

This is, again, why we need some kind of middle ground where bad things can be said about people... where there is substance being offered, not just bile.
This.
I don't feel that an upvote is enough.

RE: Crediting code, systems, etc.
Ask if you can.
If you can't, ask someone else who has if they did. If they did, it's almost certainly okay.
Credit if you know.
If there is a license, follow it.
Credit changes in the credits.
But ultimately, if it feels wrong, don't do it.

edit: Unless the code is noted otherwise, anyone can have any code I've ever touched. Even if we don't get along, I don't care. It's code, not part of my identity, and I'd rather games be enjoyable for those who run and play it than someone massaging my ego.
Actually that's a trick, my code helping anyone enjoy a game massages my ego. I'm honored by anyone who wants to use it.

Going forward we'll be forking threads from the point they devolve.
As long as it doesn't catch those posts that are not devolved.
This was easier on Wora, because the whole board except for one area was Hog Pit. It wasn't that the whole discussion fork was thrown into the garbage, it was just moved from one part of the junkyard to another and people could move with it.
Now that the Hog Pit is an opt-in service to allow people to act in a way they can't in the rest of the board, it's a wall. You either make yourself vulnerable to all commentary or you give up your train of thought, all due to the actions of other people.
I have no solution to this, but it's a concern of mine with the current laws.

RE: Magic, The Earth Way
Alright, here's the world I'm building. I'm going to post just the introduction to the world-building document (huge props to @Auspice, who is also acting as a sounding board). I'm not doing this for commentary on the particular Earth I'm constructing, and I don't think that's going to answer your questions, but it will explain where I'm coming from.

Important notes:
- No Gods. (Only Man? Er.)
- I'd like it if science were science and math is math as we understand them. I'm a bit of a Neil Degrasse-Tyson fan that way.
- I'm not talking about the world, yet, just how to make these fantasy races deal with OUR Earth, but I still want magic to keep some spice to it.

Would you encourage a bad enforcement because you don't have the resources?
I don't think this is a fair line of inquiry.
I think it's
the only fair line of inquiry(sorry, hyperbole struck, but I feel that it's an extremely fair line of inquiry). The resources to accomplish your goals are entirely in your hands. It would be nice if (and when, as it happens often) the users help along, but its up to staff on any game or board to be the masters of those resources. But inconsistent enforcement is a concern, not a certainty; it's not a matter of encouraging bad enforcement.
If it's a concern enough for you to mention it, it's a concern enough for you to try and resolve it before it becomes an issue.

But who devolves it into Hog Pit territory? And what is the law when it does?
I don't know. I would like to say that "offending" posts could be split off into a separate Hog Pit topic, leaving the unoffending posts alone, but that might require too many bureaucratic resources.
Would you encourage a bad enforcement because you don't have the resources?
I don't think you guys have a fair answer, which sucks, but you guys are trying to shift behavior to a goal that I don't think is possible without more bureaucratic resources. Or as @faraday said, you have the wrong tools for the job you're currently trying to do.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Well, is it a review, or a viewpoint? "Hey, this happened." Then we talk about the thing. I'm sure this has a name. I think it's called a discussion?
Which is all well and good until someone takes it personally, or responds to it personally, or someone throws a knife then someone else throws a missile. The law of disproportionate response, because emotions are not in check.
@ganymede said in Regarding administration on MSB:
I think you could make a 1-star Yelp review that didn't immediately devolve into Hog Pit territory.
And we have.
But who devolves it into Hog Pit territory? And what is the law when it does?

Would it help if there were a separate "constructive criticism" area for game reviews?
This would be far better than forcing all game reviews to the "go ahead and eat where you poop" forum.
The ideology forming here from some (and I honestly don't know who; I've been skimming this thread because it's only cementing my desire to leave the hobby) that anything that is not positive about a game is inviting deeper and less constructive criticism is the kind of slippery-slope logic that I think truly constructive posts should be self-aware about not going into.
Punishing the self-aware due to the bad actors is crappy, and at least for me has a chilling effect on trying to be constructive unless I'm also being Kumbaya.

I... need context.
The initial concept was that there would be no context beyond what was posted, but I also am not very good at explaining myself on the best of days.
You are on Earth, this planet, today. You discover that there is magic to be had on Earth. What is it?
I only ask that if it's something from an existing source, that it at least makes logical sense to you that
So yes, I'm saying:
If magic were real, on this world we know, what would it be like?
--
The magic of Earth is the magic of the structures of people, and calling to the inhabitants of Earth and their beliefs and structures.
And here's where I hem and haw, because this answers the question—all of these answer the question—it doesn't work for what I haven't said, and I haven't said it on purpose because I want people to talk about the magic in their head, not about my world-building.
Picking about my world-building can come later.
- Technology? I love it but what about it is magic?
- Math? Even more love it, because have you seen math? It has a huge of the same sense of wonder and unknowable secrets as magic.
- Quantum Mechanics. Douglas Adams touched on this one once or twice in the H2G2 Trilogy (of four books).
- Belief. I love old Mage. I love it specifically for the "belief = power".

I'm not jerking people around, I swear. I want everyone's answers, and I will look into reading "A Madness of Angels".

Though suddenly, I want this game:

So aren't you kind of answering your own question?
My question was what you think is Earth Magic.
So I kind of am answering my own question but only if my audience is a mirror, which defeats the purpose.

For the record, I am disappointed in staff here for moving an entire thread derail to the Hog Pit when the entire thread derail did not deserve the Hog Pit, and once again negating what constructiveness was happening.

Magic, The Earth Way
If I asked you to tell me what kind of magic Earth would have, what magic is Earth Magic, what would be your answer? I’m asking this, and want any related answer.
This magic does not hide. There is no special power or ability to be able to see it. It can be obvious or loud or subtle or dull, don’t worry about people would react or what time period you’d be pulling from, even today, but it has to be magic that originates and exists on Earth.
Generic fantasy magic need not apply, unless it’s the Earth version, and feels like it.
