I'm just glad they made hanging spells much more costly, and everything, I mean everything feels streamlined.

The
cg/check
command for Mage is now complete, and I'm tentatively giving it the sign-off that it's also bug-free. It will probably make its way to some other game(s), so enjoy the 4,000+ characters of code needed to make it function this well. -
RE: Mostly Mage, Partially Descent Mux
I think the problem with mooshing too many game lines together is that there is an overwhelming number of antagonists. Throwing another entire class of antagonists at any game is going to distract from the main theme, if you have a main theme and Mage's theme is strong enough now that I think it would detract.

RE: Fanbase entitlement
It's interesting to see the thread turn into when it's okay to express entitlement.
As was mentioned early on, not all entitlement is bad, even though it's pretty cliche that a lot, perhaps even most, entitlement is negative.

RE: Mostly Mage, Partially Descent Mux
Well duh, except that mysterious events centered around people gets attention from people you shouldn't want attention from, which I realized halfway through typing my response.
In the business world, this is what is known as "an opportunity".
In the GMing world, the opportunity is to mess with the characters.

@Autumn Yes they are nice, but they aren't inherently better than, say, a gun.
Explain to the police officer about your gun.
Now explain to them about how that person appeared to have spontaneously combust you have no idea. They find no GSM, no accelerants, what are they going to hold you on? The story of someone who's obviously crazy?
And then the Seers see the police report and make your life difficult.
Maybe the gun was better after all.

(well, maybe "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because how the hell can anyone claiming to be a Nirvana fan not know that one?)
Because the song does not contain any of the words in the title.
Maybe they're not a "fan". Maybe they're just someone who likes the music and loves the Nevermind album art.
It's good art.
That baby has graduated and is working in advertising, by the way. (edit: Maybe graphic design? It's been a while since I heard that tidbit, so he probably also has a family by now.)
I believe posers are dipshits.
And I believe people who are pedantic in attempt to make a general point are missing the forest for the trees.
Unless you're really bending over backwards trying to say how people can't like Nirvana without being able to name three songs, in which case I'm still going to label you "Fun Police". I'm also going to make fun of you for cherry-picking one point in my larger argument just so you can nit-pick it down to this obtusely pedantic level.
Also, that song is called Come As You Are. DUH.

I still believe that if someone can't name, at the very least, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come As You Are," and player's choice of "In Bloom," "Lithium," "Polly," or "Heart-Shaped Box," they are dipshits for wearing a Nirvana t-shirt.
I'm sorry, can you rephrase that? All I heard was, "I am a judgmental gatekeeper of fun." Maybe I have wasted too much of my life trying to enjoy things.

RE: Fanbase entitlement
That's a more measured response, but I do not consider "can name twelve Nirvana songs" the same as "doesn't know anything about the band".
(Please note what I did there, because the two examples were so radically different that I was getting brain cramps trying to work out how they related. I was also considering, "can name twelve Transformers is not the same as not knowing that Optimus Prime died.")

That's our @Ganymede, keeping the world clear of Fake Geeks.
Fake geeks? Fuck you all.
If you grew up in the 80s, you know how big Transformers were. Then there was the 90s, when it was Pokémon.
And then there's the goddamned new movies, which use the name of classic first generation Transformers.
Wearing a Nirvana t-shirt with no knowledge of their songs? Super fuck you.
You can like something without being obsessed with it, and "able to name twelve Transformers" isn't liking Transformers, that's being part of the fan base. Judging someone because they don't know as much as you do about it is accusing them of being Not A Fan, the same kind of malarkey we had kind of recently with Fake Gamer Girls. The Transformers icons are pretty damn cool so why not wear them or put them on your car?
People want to associate with things they enjoy, whether it's a sound or a look, but because they don't know every word to "All Apologies" they're not allowed to wear the band T-Shirt?
No, good sir, fuck you.

This Mage discussion has been split from the "The Descent MUX" advertisement thread. My apologies if anything Descent-specific has been caught in here. I'll try to recognize it and move it back. Once I figure out how.
Do note I moved this to the "Mildly Constructive" board. I like conversations like these so, yeah, if you all could keep it that way. It's looking good so far, but sometimes I don't notice what board I'm replying to, too.

I moved all the talk about Mage to its own thread, "Mostly Mage, Partially Descent Mux". My apologies if something Decent Advertisement got caught there. The advertising thread is for advertisements and game updates.

As it is, you can just as easily put on the brakes on any overt magic by setting the scene in a crowded coffee place, a concert, the middle of the street on an active day... much the same way you can decide a scene is set during the day time.
^ That would be an equivalent drawback, which is precisely what I was asking about. (And was told doesn't need to exist.)
<deadpan> Oh no, I will have to roll 2-3 dice to see if I suffer from some Paradox someone help me. </deadpan>
The book is great on explaining the rules, but not helping put together these mechanics into a living world. I'm sure someone will (and should) explain why the above might be a big deal, but like the issue of Willpower and Vitae, how we manage these things online is what makes it a big deal or not.
In summary: All rule focuses come down to the social decision of The Table, but our Table is quite large and expands back in time.

If you're not willing to take responsibility for your dog's bad behavior, you shouldn't have a dog.
And this is why adults should be responsible for the fucked-up shit that their children do.
I thought that until the age of 16 (and limited until the age to 18), they legally were.

RE: Fanbase entitlement
The problem with saying it's only text, is that cyber bullying is a very real thing now, when it really wasn't an issue before.
Before when? It was an issue before any of us were even little sperms and eggs. You may note this little chestnut:
- Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.
This is a lesson on harassment over things that are "only words", and that's from a time where we had good old fashioned personal attacks, rumor, and innuendo.
What I think is different now is that the attack vector has changed, and with the anonymous component and with the larger audience I think this is why we're seeing more about it. That said, damn if I don't consider myself lucky that I had to live through only one suicide when I went to High School. Things were much better in my day.
But words still hurt, and text had nothing to do with it.

@Cobaltasaurus said in The Descent MUX:
magic is no longer instant, all spells are extended by default and you either have to have a lot time magic to do it instant or spend reaches to get there.
One reach, and you always get one reach for free. Casting as a Rote also gives you 5 - (Spell's Max Arcana Level) extra reaches for free. So, really, I don't see any reason not to cast every spell as Instant unless there's something creatively messy going on. As reaches can also flip any spell aspect from the basic to the extended chart, I can see good reasons to give it up and take your time (especially for expanding distance or duration), but when you're jumped throwing the most basic spell you can is easy.
Also, new Rotes cost 1 xp. One XP. That's ludicrously inexpensive.
The creative difference I'm seeing between nWoD Mage 1 and 2 is the use of Yantra (oWoD's Foci) which is deeply limited by your Gnosis. Sure, it takes only one reach to turn a spell's duration from Instant to 1 Turn, but any more than that and you'll be taking die penalty on top of die penalty, and can climb only so far out of the hole. Do you want to cripple a Mage? Gag them. Take away their favorite tool. They still get their Gnosis + (Arcana) to roll and successes can directly become damage, but -- oh, yeah, that fireball can be dodged.
I could never wrap my brain around nWoD Mage, but CoD Mage is an easy chart with two main components (reach and changing the parameters) and a few minor one (enhancements, adding skill for rotes, etc.). All it takes is a GM with a mildly wicked view of the world and Mage can be a game of challenges very, very easily.
I don't see the "kill a Mage on sight" rule being necessary anymore. Trust them basically as much as you would a Vampire or Werewolf in a pack. Which, er, means not a whole lot.

RE: Mostly Mage, Partially Descent Mux
Mage at Arcana levels 1 and 2 aren't bad, as Mages can no longer, e.g., see you everywhere you are at any time and instantly gib your Vampire ass.
However, once they hit 3, keep the gun handy and the lye vat on stand-by. How cheap Rotes are make them no-brainers, and any game spitting out XP like chocolate will quickly have a Mage power problem.
On the other hand, Mages get a lot of penalties to overcome, and they aren't as powerful as they were in the past. I mean, this is like saying that the uzi isn't as powerful as whatever gets mounted on attack helicopters, but it's a thing. Generalizing the Clash of Wills also helps a lot.
