Sometimes the best way to help is to appear that you didn't do anything at all.

Watched the first episode of Happy! last night. I was pleasantly surprised, in spite of its absolutely glaring issues. Hoping this does well and doesn't overstay its potential.

Look, just tell me when you're ready to work with Ares. I have a concept that's leaking out of my head

Does it have to do with Mass Effect?

      Does it?

(I kid because I care, of course. It's an established overgeneralization that 99% of ideas are never realized. Even from the greats.)

I remember, long ago, that I set people by hand. I could set up a sheet in about 10 minutes with the commands on Legacies and Eternal Night, for example. All someone had to do was tell me what they wanted.

I know more than a few games who have at most 3 people on staff. I don't think this is something that WoD games can do anymore.

I know that I've created unfortunately new terminology and ways to get the detailed information that White Wolf/Onyx Path demands of us, but then people like @skew create a step-by-step guide for which I'm eternally grateful.

Sure there are still questions, but now they can be fielded by players and staff between the dozens of other things they want to do in a given day.

Mind you, a simpler system would be nice, but there are almost no options for a game with a simple RPG system in spite of how much we need it. @faraday's FS3 is the only one that comes to mind that we've talked about recently.

As a note: Logging every bit of said or posed text takes a fuckton of space over time. Even only logging the OOC room on The Reach ended up taking up enough space that @Chime said "please cull the log", and that was just one room, albeit one room of spam. And this is knowing exactly how much space text takes in UTF-8 (which is my international character set of choice).

There is no design demands in this, it's just something that came to mind, a bit of of the coding flotsam that constantly goes through it.

So, your complaint is about players, not the technology being discussed.

As I have said many, many times: This game would be great if it weren't for all the damn players.

Usually I say that when players are all, "Nyeh, this code is broken! Nyeeehhhh, I want phone and IM code! Nnnyeeehhh!"

(For those who don't watch Venture Bros, you really should. Nyeh is the sound that Shoreleave makes when mocking someone's whining.)

@thenomain I really think you'll find a lot more people who define MUD with the characteristics @Sparks describes than the definition you're trying to use.

Perhaps, but I don't think "shrug, smile, condescending response" as a valid way to convince anyone otherwise.

I know that Faraday absolutely hates the way that Soapbox argues, and that she is tired of trying to convince anyone of anything, but I really thought she knew me better than that.

I'll be over looking at kitten pics for now.

Or...dude, I don't even know what this was for.

I don't like seeing it classified as MUD-like. I think that's misleading and potentially damaging to someone who doesn't know anything about it and sees that description and might go "Eew, not for me". To someone who's not coding (i.e. 99% of the players), virtually all of the everyday commands from Penn/Tiny will work for them.

:grins and shrugs: You're free to classify it however you-- nononononono, nonsense. If you don't think it deserves to be classified that way, then no, I'm not free to classify it however I want. Or to put it another way: No, everyone is not entitled to their own opinion.

Sometimes we don't get to be the master of our own works. Like I said before, Muck has been doing all of this long before now, decades before, but we didn't use it why? Because Furries? I don't think that was the intent of the people who created Muck (but I could be wrong!), but that ended up being the fact.

This is the problem of creators. Who gets to say what's true? Well if you leave it up to people, you give up control over it. Defending your thesis is about more than arguing. It's also about justifying the opinion.

The built-in interpreter, that you can code from the inside, is what I use to classify a MUSH-like game.

:grins and shrugs: You're free to classify it however you want. Ares has nothing even vaguely MUD-like about it as far as I'm concerned.

      Okay?

      I mean...thanks?

Or...dude, I don't even know what this was for. We already knew how you classify Ares. I disagree with your disagreeing. Go us.

      @faraday

I still consider Evennia a MUD-like because, as you said earlier, it's not a game installation, but a framework in which you can create a game.

Ares is mostly MUD-like, but works very hard not to show it.

The built-in interpreter, that you can code from the inside, is what I use to classify a MUSH-like game.

Okay, hands up everyone who remembers Nuku making highly involved interactive web pages with his games fifteen years ago.

For the curious, he was using Muck. The only negative aspect of Muck is that it was synonymous with Furry. Sometimes it’s embarrassing how we let trivial things stop us from moving forward.

As long we are catching up.

As a side-note: Everyone is disheartened by negative feedback. I just realized that after talking to @surreality about making it even easier for people to set up new clients with wikis and almost everything already installed on a Digital Ocean slice, and I've thought about doing this before, but I can only think: Why bother. The games are shrinking and there's a push away from this form of gameplay, so why do all this work if it's just a way for me to count down the minutes until my inevitable demise and the heat-death of the Universe? Isn't there anything better I could be doing with my time? Why do we continue to do this to ourselves?

Well, it's fun enough for now. Back to coding.

Make your system. See where it sticks. Reiterate. Sometimes you have to try something illogical before seeing where the limits of too-much and too-little are. I don't even think that the concept is bad, but it's not for some people.

^^^ That's where I'm getting that. Sometimes, no, you don't have to try something illogical to see where it will work. Sometimes user research tells you something is a bad idea. That's the whole point of the field of user research.

I feel that we're arguing semantics here. Or rather, I feel like I'm saying that you can just do something because you want to and see what happens, and being told I'm wrong.

So I'm wrong. I'm also out.
