Back on topic, any other scifi games besides that really old Firefly one, Star Wars or BSG?
Jesus fucking Christ is Serenity still not dead?
DRIVE THE STAKE THROUGH ITS BLACK HEART ALREADY, BY ALL THAT IS GOOD AND PURE.

RE: Regarding administration on MSB
@tempest said in Regarding administration on MSB:
After at least one person WARNED and ASKED you guys to not do it (I think it was @Three-Eyed-Crow?) because of that, I am just facepalming.
It was me! It apparently got missed (which I believe, given everything going on in that thread) or lost in the scramble just to do SOMETHING. I addressed my issue to @Ganymede and @Arkandel in PMs. There's now a split thread (maybe that one'll go back in Constructive? Idk).
ETA: Or will be maybe? I seem to have posted while things were in the process of being moved so I will await making any pronouncements.
ETA 2: And it's split now and back in Mildly Constructive. Thanks.

RE: What Do You Want In A New Game (3-options)?
Belated #3. I am always for more sci-fi. Do what's in your heart, though.

IDEA: a game called "StarDust". which is Fantasy-space esque ( so Dune/ Fading suns), but without being of those things directly. For me Dune had their 'awesome concentrated into a great set of novels, but makes it hard to game.
Based on the Neil Gaiman novel and movie of the same name?
(Don't get me wrong, I'd get a kick out of an actual "Stardust" MU*, but I'm only one of a dozen people who would and this is probably not the thing you actually wanted to do.)

@Tinuviel
I upvote because this board does not have a 'crying on the inside' indicator. -
RE: Regarding administration on MSB
Maybe a new Reviews section would be useful. I did a lot of posting in the pro-'getting commentary out of ad threads' camp when that came up, and I still think that's ultimately a good idea. But it feels like there's currently no good "home" for discussion of specific games and what they're doing right or wrong (wrong, specifically, since no admin is going to ask for praise to be removed).
ETA: And making it a separate thing from the Hog Pit would make staffers less able to obfuscate criticism from the masses, which I do think happens as things stand now.

RE: Code Discussion: Ambiance Emits
@wildbaboons said in Code Discussion: Ambiance Emits:
Another issue with environmental emits is the timing. You might start a scene where +time and weather says it's dawn and sunny, but four hours later at 4x time it's sunset and pouring.. meanwhile only about 30 minutes has actually passed in the scene.
Yeah, a lot of my antipathy for environmental emits comes from ones that run every 30 minutes (or less), or even once an hour. At that point it's spamming even a relatively normal-paced scene quite a lot, and can be jarring in ways that actively break immersion if there are changes to what you're playing (like, even if you were playing by the first emit you got, now it's something else). I'd probably not really mind them if they were less frequent.

RE: Is there a niche for Urban Fantasy that isn't WoD or FC-based?
Dark Spires (a Dresden files game) did pretty well for itself for a long time, though I don't know what the current state of it is.

RE: Character Woes
I have way more ideas than I have time and inclination to play them.
I've come to terms with the fact that, for me at least, what makes a character really work and what doesn't is more alchemical than I'd like to admit. I have to make a few PC connections that bounce off their personality well. I also have to find little tics that are fun for me to play. I once couldn't get into a character until I decided he was basically incompetent at certain aspects of his job, at which point he became entirely amusing to me. I've also taken to trying to establish a major NPC in their background that I can build the PC against. I can't map out every relationship, but I can decide how they get along with their step-father/boyfriend/roommate off-camera, and figuring out that dimension of their life that's never really RP'd helps me in how they relate to other PCs.

RE: The Churn: an Expanse game
@cura
Very interested (though will be more interested when stuff opens, I'm not one for pre game enthusiasm). That said it's an awesome setting and I think fs3 is well-suited for it. Good luck! -
RE: Narson's Playlist
Bestest Grandmaster. Loved the RP we had before Esoka trundled off into the mists.

RE: Character Woes
I've lately come to the (obvious, non-revelatory) conclusion that this hobby is much more about engagement than anything else (free time, RP 'quality', etc., though obviously those things help one engage). And you have to actively engage with something as much or more than you have to be engage by it. When I can't get into a game or character, 90% or the time the reasons are mostly Me rather than It (even if the Me issue is 'This particular story-telling style is not my thing and never a thing I'm going to fully enjoy.') The other 10%, the game is Serenity-level terrible and should die in a game fire, but those actually are outliers. In general, if I'm not having fun, I'm not working very hard to make my own fun.

RE: Saving Pages to the Database
This also doesn't feel a ton different than having mail on the webportal, which from what I've seen nobody's seemed bothered by (and its just emphasized how awk it is to work most mail systems through a standard client connection).

RE: Atomic Highway: How Granular To Go?
You might want to talk to the staffer at No Return, which has a very fun 'item scavenging' system: http://www.zombiemush.com/ I was surprised by how fun it was, back when I had the time and energy to play there, and they seemed to strike a good balance to keep things from devolving into MUD-style object silliness.

RE: To OOC Room or Not to OOC Room (and Other Artifacts)
Why does any PC need more than 1 room, if the issue is grid bloat?
If it's a house that has multiple characters living in it or the PC also has a business that serves another purpose, sure, but the 'I need 10 private rooms' thing seems a like a different problem/a problem that can be solved by staff saying 'you actually don't need 10 private rooms, no.'

RE: OTT Group Seeking A Complete Fucking Stranger?
Roll20 is great, from a technical standpoint. Lots of fun toys to play with. If there was a way to get away from the 'everything in a game is in one giant log with no easy way to break it into smaller scenes' thing, I'd probably use it as a MU*ing sub, but it's not quite there. Maybe someday.
I've only played there with friends in private games, so I can't say how easy it is to find a random game, but I have seen open games advertised in their Looking for a Group section.

RE: Atomic Highway: How Granular To Go?
The staff and players were decent during my (short) time there. Life and its demands, alas. I have no horror stories, which is as good a recommendation as any. Germane to this thread, they had a unique but not over-powering code setup that I felt worked to enhance RP rather than just be a bunch of overhead that got in the way of it.
