@misadventure I believe the Cantonese is 'gwailou', though I'm not entirely sure if it's specifically derogatory or just another word for 'white people' that gets used in a negative manner.

@tnp At least with orient it comes from the same etymology. (For those playing the home game, orient means east, occident means west. So to gather your bearings in the morning, the sun is rising in the orient.)

"Orient" when used to describe a people is understood to be racist. That's fine. When used to describe gathering one's bearings, it is not a racist word. Just stop.

Yeah... you'd be wrong on that, but I'm not going to argue it with you.

My problem with Christmas music over here in "The Other Colonies" is that one of our nation's staple Christmas tunes... is performed by a convicted child abuser. So it's a little jarring to have that thought in mind when cheerful music comes on over the tannoy.
