    • RE: Diversity Representation in MU*ing

My long-term MMO character on SWTOR is a pink twi'lek. I once had a guy who was trying to corner me for ERP tell me that it was bold of me to play such a beautiful ethnic character.

Dude. She's pink. She has head tails. She shoots lightning out of her fingertips. She is NOT a person of color. Unless that color is PINK.

When I played FFXIV with @pax, both of our characters had dark skin, and I was regularly complaining to her about how stupid some of the costuming and lighting looked on my character, and she had much sympathy.

In a lot of MUs, though, I try to play locals. And depending on the game, this can give me tons of options for PBs or just white people. (I should probably amend this to Europeans, as I've done several historical games, and generally one wants to pick an Italian looking PB for an alternate-history Italian noble.)

    • RE: Idling all day on MU*s

Sometimes I will log on while I'm working, especially if I think things are going to be slow with work.

And sometimes that doesn't work out. Work eats me. And I work from home, so I have access to all of my toys, but no time to play with them.

But I do read what I missed and try to follow up.

(I've done this on video games, too. On one contract, my boss told me he would give me a new assignment at 1 pm, so I had the morning off. So I logged onto a game, played half an hour, and then, at like 10 am, my boss was like, "HEY! I HAVE AN ASSIGNMENT NOW!" And I alt-tabbed to deal with him. And while I was dealing with him, my friend was like, "OMG, Trib died! What killed Trib?" And my spouse, who was also playing, replied, "Work. She starved to death in the base, and needs to corpse run within the base.")

    • RE: Real World Peeves, Disgruntlement, and Irks.

@il-volpe Years ago, I was trying to get a rescue dog for my grandmother, and I really wanted someone who wouldn't shed. I found this sweet little guy on a rescue site and filled out a lengthy form on behalf of my parents (who my grandmother lived with) and did all of the footwork with them.

The first time the rescue lady called me, she was all, "How many hours a day will the dog have someone at home with him?" And I replied dryly, "Twenty-three out of twenty-four. My grandmother is home all the time." And she said, "Oh, that's good for the dog!" And I said, "Yeah, it's good for the grandmother, too." I also had to explain to her more than twice that my grandmother lived with my parents, and my parents would keep the dog if something happened to her.

My mother rolled her eyes when they demanded a home visit, and I had to come by with my dog to make sure the new dog would not object to a visiting dog. It was a shenanigan. All of it. My parents adopted the dog. As loyal as he was to my grandmother, he's still my dad's doggo. In fact, at this point, he's been Dad's dog longer than he kept an eye on Grandma.

The web client is too likely to lose connection and/or stop sending me notifications.
There are also connection limitations by some work or school firewalls, but nothing widespread that I’m aware of.

There was a hospital firewall awhile back (2 years, now, maybe?) that I could not manage to use the Ares web client through. Which was frustrating, because hospitals involve a LOT of waiting, especially when you're not the patient because you're less likely to get to sleep through it all. Eventually, I just used my phone as a hotspot, because the firewall wouldn't let us watch Disney+ on the laptop, either. And we were bored.

    • RE: Crafting Thread Part ?

@jibberthehut So the larger frame is from Amazon, and I got it awhile ago when I had 2 out of the three pieces. It didn't come in a smaller size, but I wasn't necessarily planning to get more cats (and then I did, because I love @Crawfish's work and wanted to get Galen riding a shark for his player).

I got a float frame because I didn't want to deal with matting or color matching. And also, I really like the look of float frames and have some in other rooms. And for multiple pieces in the same frame, float frames are fantastic.

And then I got my third piece in the mail yesterday, and I was like, "Hmm, I'm sure that frame I bought earlier comes in a smaller size." WRONG.

As it turns out, it is difficult to find a smallish float frame. To find one in white is nigh impossible. Couldn't find one on Amazon. Ended up just googling for frames for sale. I ended up buying this one on sale from Michael's, which necessitated a trip to the store to pick it up, because they wanted more than the cost of the frame to ship it to me. Okay, fine. It's a 10 minute drive.

Except that it did not come with hanging hardware, because although the online description listed it as perfect for desk or wall, they did not provide a means for getting it to stay on the wall. Luckily, I had some hanging brackets, which I attached to the back of the frame.

      So, larger float frame: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B08GSKZC14/ -- easy to hang, 12 x 14, $20.

      Smaller float frame: https://www.michaels.com/studio-decor-expressions-float-frame/10156614.html -- not so easy to hang, 6 x 8, $8.49.

I love my Cpap, I hope mine isnt recalled

There's a list here, but it's basically all machines made by Respironics in the last decade and a bit: https://www.philips.ca/healthcare/e/sleep/communications/src-update

The key takeaway seems to be that if you're using an ozone generator to clean your machine, stop doing that. Now.

Thank you so much for posting this. Mine is recalled and they did not bother to notify me. I'm just thrilled.

Job hunting when you thought you had finally found a job to belong in.

Had a contract position last three and a half weeks. They laid me off because they were "going in a different direction." Laid on the floor and cried while the dog licked me in the face trying to figure out what was wrong.

    • RE: Did you get diagnosed with...

@silverfox I was diagnosed as an adult. I saw a therapist who was in the same office as a psychiatrist, and while she couldn't diagnose me, she essentially made a list for me to take to him. And he was like, yep. ADHD.

I later had it diagnosed again by an online telemed doctor, because one diagnosis wasn't enough or something? I don't know.

If your friend has a therapist, he should talk to them first. Because they can walk him through meditation in a productive way (which is a pretty standard non-medication treatment for ADHD as part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT), and because they can refer him to a doctor who is likely to take their opinion seriously and diagnose ADHD if it exists plus medicate it if it seems likely he'll respond to medication. Honestly, one of the best ways to deal with ADHD is with both meds and therapy.

      Recommended Course of Action:

      1. Get a therapist.
      2. Talk to therapist about ADHD and get a referral to a psychiatrist.
      3. Talk to psychiatrist and get diagnosed.
      4. Continue to work with both therapist and psychiatrist.

    • RE: The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves)

@macha If it's been more than half an hour and you still don't feel much different, make a note to ask your doctor to up your dosage. Try to keep track of how you feel each time you take it so that you can make a case for upping your dose.

It does take time to find the right dose.

it's super weird, in the shadow of turning a certain age, that I thought I would have my shit totally figured out -- but, nope, at 42 here I am sitting and and going -- that's right, the gender binary is bullshit and you should get a binder because why the fuck not.

At first I was like, "Yes! Any excuse to buy school supplies," and then I was like, "Wait."

But like, I don't think we ever really have our shit figured out, no matter how old we get. Keep trying new things! Which is to say, I hope you enjoy your not-school-supply binder.
