    • RE: History? Where'd all the history go?

      @derp Okay, thank you.

If in your deliberations you decide that you do not want that stuff here, I would be happy to take a backup off your hands so as to archive it somewhere. I am assuming that by the time a decision is made, I will be coherent enough to manage such a thing. Database migration is a part of my day job, after all.

    • History? Where'd all the history go?

I thought the point of moving to this new incarnation of the board was so that we didn't lose all of the old history.

      Where is it?

If it will not be coming up at this site once more, is it possible to get a backup of the database or something so that it may be archived elsewhere?

If this is noted elsewhere, please let me know. I've been feverish and semi-conscious for at least three days now and everything here is very confusing and not very straightforward. Especially since there seem to be Hog Pit threads in Mildly Constructive, and that seems broken at best. Or have we decided it's all the Hog Pit? Because that seems a bit ass backwards, considering that was an opt-in space.

@tributary Hey, School/Office Supplies are also exciting.

Good. I've decided that in honor of the gender binary being bullshit, I am buying myself another set of rainbow colored pens. Or maybe some cute notebooks to sit in my queue of cute notebooks that might someday get used.

it's super weird, in the shadow of turning a certain age, that I thought I would have my shit totally figured out -- but, nope, at 42 here I am sitting and and going -- that's right, the gender binary is bullshit and you should get a binder because why the fuck not.

At first I was like, "Yes! Any excuse to buy school supplies," and then I was like, "Wait."

But like, I don't think we ever really have our shit figured out, no matter how old we get. Keep trying new things! Which is to say, I hope you enjoy your not-school-supply binder.

    • RE: GMs and Players

@il-volpe Unfortunately for VASpider and their Flying Spider Monkeys, both Cobalt and I had been burned by their bullshit. So their arguments that they were totally just an active, helpful, fun-creating player who had little disagreements with a few mean people didn't work on us. We knew their game. We knew their style. And they did not appreciate being told, "We know what you are."

Because they absolutely thought they'd get away with things, just as you say.

If a game's policy is that any claim of harassment must be proven with incontrovertible evidence, then that means we are comfortable beginning from the position that people who report abuse cannot be trusted, right? That they are liars or, at least, too mentally incompetent to understand what other players are doing to them. Since such people are so untrustworthy, their reports must be investigated, correct? That's the only reasonable thing to do. No one's saying they're liars, just that they can't be trusted.

That is not what anyone here has been saying. That's twisting words, and pretty much the EXACT kind of gaslighting they're referring to. I am sure I'll be chewed up for this but VASpider, DownwithOPP and yes, even Ruiz, all practiced this exact thing. It's how they get AWAY with abusing people, by turning the accusations onto the VICTIM, and having staffers BELIEVE THEM over the actual people they are hurting. By not asking people for actual proof of the abuse.

I speak from experience, and if Cobalt were still active she could confirm, that this is precisely what VASpider did on Darkwater, the first iteration of the game, where she literally told staff several players were being abusive to her. Those several players weren't even really interacting with her, and certainly not abusively, and had no idea of who she actually was.

This came down to an apology from Cobalt to me years later when Darkwater 2.0 was made, and a personal invitation to come play there.

I hope this helps with the distinction of "letting abusers run free" and "actually making sure the accused is the abuser".

It's true. And as I recall (but I barely recall, as it was long ago), staff looked into things and eventually got to the point where it was obvious that VASpider was the problem. Then we politely told her to leave, because she could not conduct herself in a manner appropriate for fostering the community we desired on Darkwater.

(Cobalt is alive and well, doing things other than mushing. Mostly taking care of a very large puppy.)

    • RE: Forum wonk

$500 sounds super reasonable for a database migration. I'd offer to do it, as migrating databases is part of my day job, but I'm not familiar with the forum board code enough to think I could do it in a timely fashion.

I vote we get in touch with the migration team, see if this price still stands, and then collect donations.

@macha said in The Work Thread:

I work for public health insurance. I have a lot of cases with older people, some of whom do not speak English. No big, we have Lionbridge we can use.

But when I call, I get the son/daughter/whomever, and they're like "Well, I'm so and so." ... I'm like "Well, that's great, but I asked for X." ...but I can't say that. But I have to speak to the person I asked for, it's fucking HIPAA. But these chuckleheads - they will fight you on this, and it's so fucking annoying. They will insist "Well, I handle everything for them." Sure, you might, but the fact remains, I need their permission to speak to you about their case, unless you go through the paperwork, and get put ON FILE that you're an Authorized Rep (which they never do).

      Just... UGH.

When I used to have to call medical or financial institutions for my grandmother, I'd introduce myself, explain the relationship, give her personal information, and then hand the phone to her so that she could authorize it with them. She was always confused about this, and she often got chatty with the agent if they let her, which sometimes gave them trouble getting her to give the phone back to me. She just wanted to cheerfully small talk them. They were always a bit charmed. It was a reasonably painless process, too.

@macha said in The ADD/ADHD Thread (cont'd from Peeves):

      @tributary Yeah, I feel... nothing.

Very normal. They start you out on a low dosage and work their way up until you mention feeling something, because they don't want to take you higher than needed and your brain needs time to adjust.

Pretty much everyone I know who's started out on a medication journey has had the initial freakout on day 1 of 'Oh no it isn't doing anything my last hope is gone and I must not have ADHD apparently I'm just broken'. Don't sweat it!

      ^^^

Please note that you should not stop taking it. Getting your body used to this dosage will help when they up the dosage because you really want to ease into it as opposed to just slamming into it. It'll probably take a few months, but eventually you'll go, "Oh, I feel strangely productive now." And it'll be amazing, and you'll largely get used to being strangely productive.

But then, you'll have a week where there's a pharmacy-doctor office snafu, and you'll drag about, sad you don't have it. Then when you finally get your hands on the refill, it'll be like, BOOM! DO ALL THE THINGS!!! And this is what you want to avoid initially.

But do try to track how you feel day-to-day for your doctor.

@macha If it's been more than half an hour and you still don't feel much different, make a note to ask your doctor to up your dosage. Try to keep track of how you feel each time you take it so that you can make a case for upping your dose.

It does take time to find the right dose.

    • RE: Did you get diagnosed with...

@silverfox I was diagnosed as an adult. I saw a therapist who was in the same office as a psychiatrist, and while she couldn't diagnose me, she essentially made a list for me to take to him. And he was like, yep. ADHD.

I later had it diagnosed again by an online telemed doctor, because one diagnosis wasn't enough or something? I don't know.

If your friend has a therapist, he should talk to them first. Because they can walk him through meditation in a productive way (which is a pretty standard non-medication treatment for ADHD as part of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT), and because they can refer him to a doctor who is likely to take their opinion seriously and diagnose ADHD if it exists plus medicate it if it seems likely he'll respond to medication. Honestly, one of the best ways to deal with ADHD is with both meds and therapy.

      Recommended Course of Action:

      1. Get a therapist.
      2. Talk to therapist about ADHD and get a referral to a psychiatrist.
      3. Talk to psychiatrist and get diagnosed.
      4. Continue to work with both therapist and psychiatrist.

@macha Ugh. Yeah, as long as they're somewhere you can get them sent from, that's good.

And some insurance companies have preferred labs, which is why I mentioned it. What insurance covers is sometimes ridiculous.

(Also, I went to the pharmacy to get my Adderall yesterday, and the pharmacist was like, "Hi, Ms. Tributary! How're you doing? I have the prescriptions for you and Dr. Tributary, but I need your driver's license for the controlled stuff.")

@macha Do you have a copy of the tests now? Demand a copy sent to you by email or whatnot. Most fax machines can send an email at this point.

Also, demand the tests be faxed to the doctor who ordered them (AGAIN) and possibly your primary care physician. If they also send them electronically, great, but doctor offices love paper.

If your insurance will take one of the independent labs like Quest Diagnostics, they have an app that allows you to fax results to doctors yourself. Note: you cannot do this from their website, only the mobile app, because they are dumb.
