Where to play?
-
I want to make a new character somewhere. Anyone got any suggestions on a good at least semi active place to play?
-
I'm enjoying Gray Harbor. It's active, modern horror/fantasy that isn't WoD and has a laid back, semi-sandbox style. There's metaplot and plot to get involved in, but you can also just do your own thing, including supernatural things, without trouble. People are nice, staff seem sane, and I've had fun.
It IS in beta, so don't get too attached to stuff as the system undergoes some tweaks and expansions as things get shaken out in play.

I'd second this. I haven't gotten really, really into things because I've been busy lately (and my character is a bit lacking hooks, but mostly the busy thing, because the other thing is totally workable), but it's been fun so far.

@Pyrephox @peasoupling I'm so glad you guys are having fun
@Cobaltasaurus we would super love to have you over at gray harbor! We've got an amazing team of STs at the moment who are always doing stuff. @krmbm and I are working on metaplot and side plot stuff. We are also brainstorming on some faction plots since we have a few active groups (hospital, crime/police, etc). And most importantly we have an amazing playerbase!
Hope to see you there

Folks at Gray Harbor are kind and inclusive. Add me to the list of folks who recommend the place.

Well! Looks like I'll be checking out Grey Harbor tonight!
-
I'm not nearly as active there as I'd like to be but I'll throw in another voice for Gray Harbor. Great game filled with great people.
-
I had tried Gray Harbor and not gotten into it. I will totally give it another go I think.
-
@Pacha I think one of the more difficult things in Gray Harbor (and games like it) is learning how to catch rp via the Ares system. It's not like Arx where you can hang out on a public square room and people will come. You have to open a public scene and put it out there on the RP channel (preferably with some kinda idea about what the scene will be). People who do that are super successful at getting RP.
But if you ever need an RP hook, we are here to help. You can always page me in game (almightyme) or my coadmin (karmabum) and we can direct you to people who are interested in the same things you are, or give you an idea of a hook to chase
-
I may be stopping by as well.
-
I don't know if I've ever thrown in for a game but past RP with @bear_necessities and @krmbm has been good, they're great players all around, it was great to see them throw down on a collaboration like this. Gray Harbour gets my vote of confidence.
I'm not sure about the sandboxy part. Only because, to me, sandbox is more 'we have this game and there are evil dragon lords as part of the meta' and players in private don't like the meta so are using the system/game to play their version of the take down of the evil dragon lords or something.
Its more PRP friendly forward (for a positive label) but there is meta and Admins will help with hooks and leads to more RP for players if they ask; which they're saying but I've seen how well they weave it together.
Second on the RP searching. I know some places you go and try RP chan and don't get much, but the folks are all good here from what I've seen. Ask and ye shall receive, at least bites. Like crazy good collection of players that are responsive to RP seekers (like: I can't now, but later, lets work something out -- and they follow up/through on it).
-
An awesome example: I indicated my desire to RP on the appropriate chan, accompanied by stating my willingness to toss out a few scene location options and do the opening pose. I promptly had two takers. Sure, it was a super casual scene, but over the course of it I ended up getting a new relationship hook and a new RP buddy, as well as the IC knowledge that someone else was looking into the same mysterious circumstances currently on my character's radar.

I'm glad Gray Harbor is doing well. It seems like a lovely game populated and staffed by lovely people.
However, are there any other places out there to play on? I'm in the same situation as Cobalt in that I am not currently playing anywhere and would really like to run some plots/do some RP. Gray Harbor doesn't like it is up my alley as I checked out the theme and it wasn't for me, so I would be interested if there were any other options.

This doesn't actually answer your question, but I just wanted to toss in: I respect players that are able to make these decisions instead of trying to round-peg their way into Square Hole by Night just because it's the current hotness. If I could up-vote your post more than once, I would.
I truly hope you find somewhere that is your flavor.

I tried Gray Harbor and it's just not working. I applied for a mechanic that ran his father's motorcycle shop and was rejected because on the restricted list it says they don't want any more businesses for "Automotive/mechanics"
Because repairing cars is... totally the what a place called "Biker King" ran by the son of a biker gang member would be doing.
They said I was welcome to play my concept if I wanted to work for someone at one of the existing auto-shops... which is totally the same thing as a motorcycle repair shop I guess?
But more importantly, the place just looks boring. Do any of you actually play there and find it entertaining? It really strikes me as a small-town simulator with 2% supernatural thrown in to try and bring in players.
Is it even worth trying for?
-
As I've said, I'm not as active as I'd like to be but I have a blast there with my character. I actually very much enjoy it as a smalltown simulator. Maybe I just gravitate towards that style of RP, however. I also play on a currently closed/private game with a similar type of theme(just set in the 1980s) but the players are all humans living in a world filled with supernatural horrors and I have a blast there too. Might just be a preference thing.

Even if you ignore the fact that "automotive" includes motorcycles by definition, the "/mechanics" part pretty clearly restricts all forms of mechanic-related businesses.
So it sounds like you apped a concept on their restricted list, got rightfully rejected, and then they tried to offer a potential alternate concept that might work (working at one of the existing businesses). All seems perfectly reasonable to me. Where's the issue?
-
@Carex Were you the guest who was saying really weird and awkward things about my pseudonym ('Cobalt')?
-
@Carex honestly, if a place looks boring to you (in addition to your concept not being allowed right now), then why not just be glad that you dodged the bullet of putting in extra work to make an app for a place you'd just fizzle out/be meh about within a few weeks?
Clearly some people really enjoy it, but that's irrelevant really. You can't make yourself like something, and if you're already feeling negatively about the place and wondering out loud why anyone would find it interesting, why not just dodge the bullet and find another place?
