A sticky would be nice, and putting the developing games in the Constructive section for the actual feedback the creators seem to want instead of the ad section would also be nice, and moving the defunct games to some kind of thread graveyard would be even nicer.

How are we, the moderators, to know when games are defunct?

@ganymede I think removing games would still be reliant on someone posting that the game is dead. Sure, that could mean some games are on a list that are dead in all but name, but it's better than like wading through lists of a hundred non-RP MUDs with 2 players each on the other aggregates imo.

Do you think it would be good to cull the advertisements for games whose threads have showed no activity for 6+ months? Maybe a year?

I would envision sending the OP for the thread a little notice that the thread'll be taken down unless we hear from them.

@ganymede Yes, I think that is reasonable. It wouldn't really be a big deal to repost in the worst case anyway.

Actually they could probably do with a repost, and an update, so having a time limit does make some sense in that regard as well.

Right. That notice is more of a "hey, we're thinking of taking this down, you mind?" To which they can respond: "please keep it up" or "sure, that's fine, take it down." Would probably cull the list substantially.

Also remember, since it doesn't take vast admin powers, if anyone wants to volunteer to keep a sticky post/thread going with links to MU* threads, wikis URLs etc in it we'd be happy to help from our end, so that anyone looking for a game can more easily find one.

@arkandel I could probably help to manage something like that. I love mindless lists.

I'll keep the rules for the official drinking game.

And I'll have an off-site backup for when the admin flakes out and loses the entire database again so we can just start up from where we left off.

@wtfe Well, I mean it's a possibility? But there's an automated backup system in place and we're grabbing daily snapshots of the data - including avatars - in two locations. It's not 100% super foolproof but...

The one way this can go south is if something physically happens to me since I'm the only person with shell access to the host at the moment. I'll remedy it at some point by giving the other two admins a way to grab the files as well, at which point... well, feel free to have me assassinated. 🙂

Three consecutive lost databases makes me ... well, I'll keep a local copy anyway. 😄

@wtfe The only thing I could do more is pay a bit extra to have regular backups made on the host provider level, but it seemed unnecessary other than to get the forum up faster following some kind of cataclysmic event.

As it stands I could set up a basic Linux VM, install redis and nodebb from scratch then restore the data and avatars, at which point we should be back up.

Have I tested it to see? Hah-hah-hah, I don't have to, as what can possibly go wrong? In theory that works so it should be fine.

Why are we talking about culling any post? Is there something about this forum that an out of date post needs to be removed?

@thenomain We were just talking about Ads. It's kind of disconcerting to have an Ads category with Ads for games that no longer exist. It would be like opening the classifieds section in a newspaper and find pages on pages of ads for stores that closed years ago 🙂

Well I mean, if an ad is from a year ago and there's no active discussion....what do you expect?

If I open a year old newspaper, I'm not going to expect the coupons to still be good.

ETA : Personally, I'd still really really really prefer it not be permitted to post ads for things that aren't open yet. If you want to 'discuss ideas related to your game idea' or something, that belongs in Mildly Constructive or something, doesn't it? I don't want shit sitting in the ad forum for 6 months or a year and not even ever opening. It's pretty ridiculous.

I see a forum as a place for historical record, and besides I don’t see a game as defunct just because someone hasn’t advertised for it in six months. The logic doesn’t fit to me.

I also think it’s adding work when none is needed. If someone reads an ad dated 2015, is it really that disconcerting if there’s no game there anymore? A problem looking for a solution? That’s how I see it.
