A New Star Wars game? (Legends of The Old Republic (Name pending))
-
@mercutio Yeah, if you want your Jedi to get involved in the Mandalorian War, by canon they have to be Revanchists (heck, all of the Revanchists became Sith by canon, but you can change that). Then again, don't you want PCs to be the type who intervene rather than sitting by the sidelines? Even if they intervene peacefully?
I would have no problem requiring PCs to not be the type who sit around the temple debating philosophy while the galaxy burns. But I also think that there are a lot of options for why a character might become a Revanchist besides "I want to kill Mandos," and chargen staff can help them find those options.
@faraday The Old Republic Era definitely has fewer fans than the Movie Era, but it was the setting for two very popular video games and a very popular MMO -- it has a lot more name cache with most possible players than say... 1,000 years after The Old Republic (when there really is absolutely nothing going on by canon).
-
@seraphim73 By cannon you mean... the cannon that was thrown out after the change of ownership?
But clearly people would prefer to rehash the same old stuff.
Not a hill worth dying on.

To be clear - I'm not suggesting anyone rehash anything. Personally I see plenty of opportunity for stories in the Rebel/Empire era that have nothing to do with blowing up Death Stars or people in the Skywalker family. But that's not the point here. You asked why familiarity matters and I answered. "Star Wars!" means different things to different people, that's all. And to play in a game effectively, I need more to go on than "there's a Republic and Jedi and some guys with armor like Boba Fett." Constructively to OP: Don't assume that just because you have name recognition that people will understand the setting, unless of course you only wish to attract die-hard fans.

I am going to say that since @Mr-Johnson began brainstorming about a new Star Wars game on a whim just 24 hours ago there is still some room for refining the theme, mechanics, and overarching plots.

Pretty much. Nothing's really set in stone except the fact FC's are going to be NPC's only. TS is consent only and should only ever be done in private RP rooms off the main grid, and I plan on setting it SOMEWHERE during the old republic era. I kind of only even wanted to do the end of the Mandalorian war because I've gotten so many different people paging me and being really really interested in playing Mandalorians so I figured it was a good way to let people get their Mandalorian fix their jedi fix and sith fix.
As to why I want to even do a game set in the TOR age? Well it's not to avoid big names or even really to avoid problems I like Clone Wars and original trilogy just fine and admit it'd be a more popular star wars setting. It's mostly just because: I really like playing KoTOR 1 and 2, and might as well do something in a setting I'm passionate about rather then a setting I like.
-
There is also nothing saying that a baseline of TOR with a focus on the Mandalorians could not involve very original plots and brand new heroes/villains.
That's why we RP, right? To create stuff?

No. Wrong.
We RP to TS.

@tempest And we TS to create stuff.

Hell yeah Tempest, THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT. As a 5 foot tall 18 yearold jedi master with one blue eye and one green eye who has bright pink hair and a lightsabre that changes color with her mood? I can completely get behind you on that!

That's hawt.
Just don't change your hair color, or I'll fucking cut your head off.
-
I hate all of you.
-
@tempest
Wasn't there a char on aoa that did that? -
I would also like to voice my interest in this game getting made!
Didn't have time to read every post, but not charging people to travel between worlds would be great.
I would also suggest limiting yourself to only one or two starting factions until you get more players, and only a couple of worlds. So many Star Wars games feel empty because they have dozens of worlds and near-infinite player factions.
Avoid hard-coding in that you have to 'drive' a ship object anywhere. Just let people spoof ships or other transportation as needed. If they buy a dedicated ship, then that can be an enterable object or a Temp Room Desc they save or something. I dunno. But having to get into an object and type MUX commands to move it around the grid is very anti-fun, imo.
I'd avoid an overly-coded monetary economy, too. Sure, it's realistic, but few people play Star Wars for the gritty realism of having to wait for their paycheck to come in before they can buy a blaster pistol.
Just my two cents! Good luck!

I agree that less is more in the beginning.
Also a fan of THREE factions. Three faction starter planets and a nifty neutral planet for all that cantina RP, man.
-
@blondebot As much as I'd love to take that on board and will keep it in mind when I get coders for the most part at the moment I need to work with what I have and will just be keeping to redescing existing game systems for the most part. Though I would love to add a +meetme code like on superhero games, or a system where you can just pick the room from a list of all the rooms you want to instantly go to. I'm not a super fan of requireing space travel, but I like having it an option no one is forced to use. (Unless they want to do trading and make money... then you gotta use slow travel baby.)
-
@mr-johnson If it's Dahan's Saga code, there should be a meetme command built in.
-
@seraphim73 Fair enough I haven't been able to dig into the code yet to find out as apparently there's some issues getting it to launch properly, but hopefully that will not be an issue for long and I'll be able to get to work redescing
-
Good news everyone! The game is now running without you know falling apart into a burning pile of slag and work can begin proper on turning this place into the KoTOR game of my dreams. Now if only I knew where to begin.
-
@mr-johnson
Seriously, whatever comes of this, major props to you for taking an idea and running with it. Exciting! -
@three-eyed-crow Well thank you, that means a lot. I honestly wasn't even to get this far. It was mostly on a whim I even started on this project. Let's see if I can make diamonds out of... well not coal... I guess we're making diamonds out of less shiny diamonds. Making Diamonds out of opals? I don't know the metaphor falls apart. It sounded much better in my head!
