@Sparks : Atlantis has been so much better than Savitar was I never looked back once switching over, and I'm notoriously hard to budge on anything changing ever.

Very looking forward to new things, and very glad to know you're still out there!

        Oh fucking well.

I have atlantis and I need help! I cannot get it to keep auto turning on auto spell correct. So unless I am like totally alert when I log in and manually do it.. I end up with some WEIRD writing as it "fixes" names and owod words!
I also desire to have it turn on auto-logging, but having it make a new text file for each tab, and each day.
          Can you help?

@Sparks is the expert! And sadly I will not be near a Mac until Tuesday. I can share the auto-logging then.

I have a waggish sense of humor.

@pixidusty What about checking out Edit -> Check Spelling

Uncheck "Check Spelling While Typing", you can then use command+; or command+: to check spelling/grammar.

@pixidusty Unfortunately, how the autocorrect works got changed in Mac OS X a while ago. Atlantis 2.0 (which is not yet finished/released) accounts for this, but the 0.9.x codebase does not.

HOWEVER! There's a handy trick you can use if you don't want to turn off autocorrect globally. Make sure Atlantis isn't running, then open Terminal and type:

defaults write net.riverdark.Atlantis NSAutomaticSpellingCorrectionEnabled -bool NO

...and then start Atlantis, and you should have the red underlines but no automatic text replacements. (This, incidentally, works for any application, as long as you know the bundle identifier.)

As for automatic logging, there's this old tips-and-tricks bit on the Atlantis boards, which hopefully will help.

Just add the words to your spellchecker and be done with it as a problem? I did that for things like ooc and the like. Works beautifully.

Fun? What is this fun thou speakest of?

@pixidusty Hey there! If you want to turn off autocorrect for your whole computer, so to the System Preferences app, select Keyboard, and go to the Text tab. There's a checkbox there for "Correct spelling automatically" you can uncheck. You might need to restart applications for it to stick for them.

The Terminal is in your main Applications folder in the Utilities subfolder, or just do a spotlight search for Terminal. It's Mac's native line command application.

@pixidusty — like @Roz said, if you want to turn autocorrection off for everything on your system, just do so in the System Preferences. If you just want it off in Atlantis (or any other application), then the trick I listed above will work for you.

I know I turned it off for my computer because I'M NOT ON A PHONE, APPLE, I HAVE A FULL KEYBOARD AND CAN TYPE FOR MYSELF THANKS.

I actually know a lot of people who typed like "hi i m teh newbie who had questions for you", who admittedly benefit from the autocorrection. With that feature on, they end up with 'hi I am the newbie who had questions for you' which at least looks slightly less egregiously awful. 🙂

I admittedly turn it off myself globally, but still. There ARE people who benefit from it!

Just because you're an awful speller doesn't mean you're an idiot. 😞 If you're a proficient speller, I can't see how it would get in the way of too much anyhow.

Honestly, I like to know when people type like that versus typing better when they're a new person on my game.

I think the example Sparks gave is pretty relevant just in terms of 'you should type at a certain level of proficiency when you're playing a text-based game.'

I'm a really good speller, but the autocorrect does get in the way. It's hard to continually add words all the time, and roleplaying has tons of words outside the normal dictionary that pop up.

@Roz Most spell-checkers let you add new words, though.

@Arkandel Right, but, like -- you didn't read what I said. I know you can add words to the dictionary, it's just a pain with how many words you have to add all the time in a RP context when so many words aren't already in a dictionary. And if it doesn't actually help you because you're already a good speller, it just gets in the way, so why not just turn it off.

I just thought the tone was insulting is all. I'm a terrible speller, but it doesn't mean I'm all Myseriouse vamyire says Hai guyz.

Adding words is a completely valid solution for someone who can't figure out how to turn it off or if it keeps coming back on.

@Roz For me the autocomplete/correct part is the hard part. Its hard for me to explain how or when it happens but I think if I type really fast and hit something out of order like, "go" and it turns out as 'og" the autocorrect/complete switches it to "of" or something. So if I'm not paying attention CLOSE to the line of text that is going into the input box then things get a little dicy.

And furthermore, who knows how to spell anymore?! That's what the red squiggly lines are for. FIGHT THE POWER!

I didn't say that adding words wasn't a valid solution for people who want to do that, only there ARE ways in can get in the way even if you're a good speller, which had been stated couldn't be the case. Like ThatOneDude said, it can just drop in and switch words that aren't what you meant, you have to go back and fix it, etc. And the person who was asking about turning off autocorrect had asked how to do it globally.
