Nah, @Kestrel is awful but not stupid. The server is going to be full of butthurt ninnies and that's just how the internet works in general, as @mietze just pointed out. I wanna know, will there be a rule added against unsubstantiated witch-hunts before or after someone's reputation is ruined by a scorned ex-TS partner? Will there be a policy in place about reporting instances to staff and not employing vigilante justice? Will there be rules against making bait-alts to get someone to do something skeevy '4 Tha Screenshot'?

Like, make your group, but for the love of all that's good, holy, and well-thought-out, address these issues before your server full of unloaded issues goes full Katamari on some unsuspecting game.

Well, I mean, almost all the Discord servers I'm on currently are for 'game clan' type things for vidja games. Or RL groups to chat when we aren't together and to plan get-togethers.

EDIT: Oh, wait! I am on the Ares one, but that's mostly Fara sharing updates and code q's.

I hear all about these horrible clusterfucks and some part of me is torn between being overwhelmingly grateful and feeling weirdly left out.

Couple things:

Game staff are welcome to join this server. We currently have two main moderators (me and one other person), and two game-specific moderators.

Game-specific moderators do not have any moderating privs except for the specific game channel they've been assigned to. The assumption is that they have that game's best interests at heart and are looking to create a better community for their specific game. They may want to help new players, prevent someone from using the channel to out in-game secrets, etc. If that's you, you can have complete control over how your game's channel is being run.

So if any game staff out there are concerned about this but are willing to abide by in-house rules and don't have a reputation for being part of the problem, you're welcome to join and ensure for yourself that discussion relating to your game remains positive.

Out of honest curiousity: how do you judge this? Especially with the large number of games out there and many staffers may be relative unknowns. Is it guess work? What is 'problem' based on?

Would 'I didn't like how they handled my app' cause them to be barred?
Would 'We didn't get along at all' get them barred even if they have otherwise a history of being supportive and well-meaning, just abrasive?

One of them isn't, one of them is. The reason one of them isn't is that at the time, they were the only person from that game (Sindome) to join the community, and I opened up discussion on their game specifically because they joined.

If Sindome's staff ends up joining this community I'm sure they won't mind stepping aside to let the game's staff moderate in their stead. In the meantime, that person has been doing an excellent job of advocating for the game in question and encouraging other members to get curious about checking it out.

What about games that do not have a presence in your group? Will discussion about those games remain positive? If so, what steps will be taken to ensure that discussion remains positive? What repercussions are there for violating the group’s rules?

If the game has no presence in the group then I assume it wouldn't end up being discussed. Why would it? If it does end up being discussed extensively, a new channel can be opened, but without knowing anything about the game and its policies, I have no way of making sure its OOC rules are enforced.

I generally believe that a game's rules exist for a reason and I'm not looking to have this community undermine those. I made this community because I wanted to see something better than what currently exists in other game discussion groups.

That depends on the extent and the perceived intention. Step one is generally a friendly discussion explaining why that thing was bad and asking nicely to knock it off. Step two, you can leave.

@Kestrel Haven has pretty strict rules against IC/OOC communications, and one of the problems I see coming up, again and again on many games, is that stalking, harassment, bullying, manipulation, etc. that happens outside of a game's in-house systems (mail, pages, messenger) is nearly impossible for staff to police.

You're now accepting the burden of being yet one more place where vulnerable people are wearing a target on their back without the protection of staff aid should things go pear-shaped, so what plan do you have in place for when inevitable receipts get back to people and they go on the offensive? Remember, one person's skeevy jackass is another person's current manipulating TS partner - Logs. Are. Going. To. Be. Shared.

Suppose for a moment a poster says something defamatory about a game. Another member speaks out against it. An argument arises. How do you address the allegedly defamatory statement? What about the speaker and the defender?
