New Handheld-only Switch
-
Nintendo just announced a new version of the Switch that is only for on-the-go; slightly smaller, no docking or removable joy-cons, about 25% less expensive, etc.

I was actually going to post about this, but was distracted by needing to chew out TechRadar for the terrible editing in their article about it.
...ahem.
I’m torn on this. The ‘solo play only... ONLY’ is sort of a drawback for me. Like, I get not having it able to hook up to a TV, sure, but being unable to play with a friend on the go kinda sucks.
I mean, I rarely do local play multiplayer ANYWAY, but I’d like the option.
I wish it had one-or-the-other: TV play or multiplayer capability (aka buy some joycons and play with your friend!).

Reports do say that you can still sync up additional joycons, so you can get the new little switch and some joycons and play with your friend that way. You'll have to gather around the handheld switch, but that isn't necessarily a problem, depending on the game. And there are a few games that use joycon features that aren't available in the mini model, so they wouldn't be a waste of money, even if you only occasionally use them for multiplayer.

So the issue there is: if this is doable, why not include a kickstand? If you wanna play multi on the Light, you’re gonna need an awkward setup (prop it up and hope it doesn’t slip!) or a third-party case.

Whatever you guys decide to buy, I want people to play DQ Builder 2 with.

I didn't know Dairy Queen had a simulator game....or that it had a sequel!
-
@Auspice It's more popular in Japan then it is in the states
-
Dairy Queen Builder 2 is the shit. I set my blizzards to cost $0.00 and removed the doors and windows from the establishment and it turned into a scene from The Crazies. Way more fun than murdering pool goers in The Sims.

This is a "Why doesn't Company X do Thing Y That I Want" question, and the answer is always the same: If you can answer that kind of question, get into stock trading ASAP.
While it's probably also about money, it could also be about time and the lack thereof, or the desire to make a product that can't be done between the various resources available (time, money, employees, other projects demanding attention, etc).
There's nothing wrong with a company leaving a potential solution with third party developers. This is a win all around for the company and those developers if it catches on; the company is supported by choice, and the developers are supported by the rising popularity of something that's rising in popularity because they're supporting it.
It's not a guarantee, but when it happens it's a sight to behold and the fans should be grateful for it too, though people will still complain about it.

Include a kickstand?
Recent history says you'll be lucky if they include an AC adapter to charge this thing.

Bonus points if they don't tell you any other AC adapter but theirs will brick the unit.

This is one of these things that, like the 2DS, I would have instantly bought instead of the original had it come out at release. I've had my Switch since July of 2017, and the only times I've used it on a TV is for Just Dance.
Admittedly, Just Dance is a lot of fun.

FWIW, it's only the Switch Dock that uses non-standard USB-C charging, because it has wonky power requirements that fall outside the USB-C Power Delivery spec; a USB-C power supply that doesn't speak Nintendo's extensions to the power delivery spec can fry the Dock. The Dock should be used only with an actual Nintendo USB-C power adapter because of that. (And there is a warning about that in the dock's box.)
The Switch itself? That'll work fine with anything that supports the standard USB-C Power Delivery spec. Modern Apple and Chromebook USB-C chargers, for instance. I just bring one USB-C power brick with me when I travel; I use it for the laptop most of the time, then plug the Switch in when I need it.

See I'm the opposite, I prefer to use my switch on my TV. I'm okay with playing Let's Go: Eevee! In handheld mode, but playing BOTW in handheld mode makes me sad. There's too much going on on the screen, and I'd prefer my TV.
-
@Cobaltasaurus — I think it depends on the game. Smash Brothers? Mario Party? Breath of the Wild? Those I like to have on the TV. Some, like Mario Kart, I can happily play either way if I'm playing solo; local multiplayer needs the TV. But for certain other games, I genuinely prefer the handheld experience: Octopath Traveler, Pokken Tournament DX, Kirby All-Stars (no, I don't know why I prefer handheld to TV for this one), Sonic, Little Dragons Cafe, and so on.
