I think you should make the game YOU want to play the way that YOU want to play it

I think this is really important. There are pros and cons to stated and not, and while the Trait system that most comic games seem to use attracts a certain crowd, a stat system will likely attract a different crowd. Especially in an OC only game that will draw in a slightly different crowd than the standard super hero game anyways.

Just my own experience here, but I think that 'Supers MU players only/overwhelmingly prefer freeform' mostly comes from trying to get a player base within our own community. Talking about MU's with TT superhero RPG players outside the community, there is an interest for the kind of persistent, 24/7 game experience that an MU can provide. Overall, I'd say it would probably be at least a wash (as many new TT players wanting to join as free-form players avoiding) at first, with a side benefit of having more players familiar with a system to speed up any dice rolling & cgen, as well as being able to help new players learn the system.

Yeah, whether you use a system or not I think you'll get players. You just have to decide what interests you, what will motivate you to support the game, what will motivate you to play on the game. Do what you want, be passionate about it, and people will come.

Yeah I think you'll get a DIFFERENT playerbase with Ares and FATE but not necessarily a smaller one. Though you can never tell what people will rush the gates for and what they'll be meh on. FATE and OC make a game more appealing to me but I cannot predict people at all.

Another question is, do you (the general-you) want to draw from the established pool of superhero MU* players or are you interested in catching the attention of newcomers who might have been interested in the genre but never played it, and who might decide to try it out if capes and spandex came baked into some of the new generation toys (Ares, etc)?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most of the established pool of superhero MU* players all about the canon characters? An OC game might inherently be targeting a different audience, and definitely has a different set of constraints because you've got folks defining their own powers instead of having a common shorthand of "It's Iron Man, duh".

I am deeply interested in an OC game because I like making my own superheroes. Loved it even when I had to do algebra to make a character back in the original Villains and Vigilante days.

Also, and there is no nice way to put this, OC games have fewer creepy dudes playing lesbian Emma Frost or gay harem-having Superboy, just because the fan wank material isn't there. (And this isn't me saying I think playing those characters as LGBTQ is wrong, playing them as sex dolls isn't even wrong. But it always comes across as desperately unpleasant to anybody who doesn't share that same sexual interest in those characters.)

Lol, this reminded me of when I played Superboy in a monogamous relationship with Nico Minoru and our Emma Frost was played by a dude with so little interest in TS we cycled through Cyclops trying to TS her like once every two months.

                      Then there was Hero's Dreams...
                      -Superboy clonecest with Match
-Impulse clonecest with whatever his evil clone is
-Alex Powers making out with Lor-Zod (both were 11 y.o.)

Lots of fetishes get put on display in Supers games.

Gotta say, one of the reasons I only play OC-only games is that I definitely DO NOT want to be playing a character and have someone app a canonical love interest and be like: YOU NOW MUST LOVE ME.

I still enjoy Canon chars but yes. This is an issue.

Apped onto a game with a friend once. He apped Nightwing and from day 1 the Starfire was obsessed. (And holy shit the shade I got when it was clear we were apping in together...)

Not strictly a clone per se, but I believe that Inertia.

                              Okay.

The MU is standing, and I am braille-ing my way through setting up the server side bits and chargen. I chose Ares and FATE. I'm learning as I go, so it'll be a bit slow.. but quicker than going on another platform and trying to find a coder.

I can tell the same story regardless of system, and this way I can actually have a running game instead of a theoretical one. 🙂

Once I get the system bits down, I'll get the website bits up to snuff and a grid built. I think that's when I'll make staff recruitment pitches.
