I went looking for a podcast thread, only to realize that the last one was started by a banned person and died quickly.

      So.

What podcasts do you listen to? I have an hour commute in the evening and I'm burning through my list alarmingly fast.

So far I've done: (descriptions added!)

American Elections: Wicked Game - A weekly podcast tracing every election in the US history up until the 2020 election. It started exactly enough weeks ago to trace one a week.
American Scandal: It is exactly what it says. It traces some huge American scandals. It's primarily ones in the later half of the 20th centry. Enron, Wounded Knee, the Hare Krishna murders - just some really fascinating stuff.

I'm now listening to Slow Burn from Slate that covers all the little stories that surrounds the Watergate scandal.

      What do you recommend?

        Descriptions added!

Ologies - Alie Ward, host of Innovation Nation on CBS, asks smart people dumb questions. (guests have job titles that end in -ologist and if you think whatever they do sounds boring, you're probably wrong)
Stuff You Should Know - Two guys talk about all kinds of fascinating shit
Stuff You Missed In History Class - Two girls talk about fascinating historical shit that you probably didn't know about
Trashy Divorces - Two girls talk about the trashy divorces of famous people
Lore - A podcast of mysterious tales. I enjoyed it more once I realized that it was about telling a good story, and not facts.
Sawbones - A doctor and her non-doctor husband sidekick talk about weird medical practices in the past and the present. Pliny the Elder is referenced often.
Criminal - Situations that you'd never expect to relate to a crime turn out to relate to a crime.
Noble Blood - Historical events and figures related by Dana Schwartz, who has a voice you just want to listen to forever (ymmv)

        (eta)
This Podcast Will Kill You - Two doctors named Erin talk in appropriately scientific detail and surprising delight about diseases and poisons.
Death in the Afternoon - Caitlin Doughty (world's coolest mortician) and friends talk about death culture and the death industry.
Swindled - A Concerned Citizen reveals some of the biggest swindles in history (and small ones too)
The Dream - Season 1 is a look into the world of MLMs and season 2 is a debunking of 'wellness' culture.

And for your class, Story Pirates: Creative writing submitted by children is brought to life a la radio play by a comedy troop in NYC. Surprisingly enjoyable for adults as well.

Kermode and mayo film - a really funny film review podcast with a lot of fun in-jokes.
The missing crypto queen - about a woman who set up one coin "crypto" currency and then vanished, and what happened.
The whisperer in darkness - creepy as all get stories about a man who leaves desperate messages and then vanishes.
Ear hustle - a podcast from inside a prison, with a glimpse of their lives.
Tunnel 29 - the story of a man who dug out of one side of berlin to the other, and then dug back in..

No such thing as a fish - Funny Trivia podcast, with 3 panelists giving 3 facts of the week, with everyone weighing in with related ones.

True crime bullshit (may be too graphic) - True crime podcast centered around serial killer Israel Keyes, lots of interviews with people related to the case, research, and FBI interview tapes.

Let's talk about sects - Isn't updated as often but if you like culty stuff, the podcaster does an in depth summary/explanation (along with many times snippets of interviews from various people involved) of cults from around the world, concentrating on 1 per episode

In addition to many already named.

Seconding Noble Blood. That one is fun. It's specifically about nobility that has a bloody story, starting with Marie Antoinette. The latest is Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. However, they also tie in various stories of these people and how they relate to the present -- the one on Lord Byron, which tells the tale of him and one of his lovers that just went super south and devolved into this really sad madness, also covers Ava Lovelace, his daughter and the world's first computer programmer. Well worth the listen. And yes, I would listen to the narrator read a phone book as well. Her presentation is lovely.

Philosophize This! - A history of philosophy, from ancient times to modern. It starts with the greeks and winds through the middle ages, and the latest episode is on Nozick. Another one that's well worth the listen if you're interested in philosophy at all. It's a super deep dive, but very approachable and broken down for complete newbies.

Future Perfect - A podcast about new (or old) ideas that have the ability to radically change the world as we know it.

Science Vs. - A podcast that looks into the science of various things we think we know about and sort of debunks them. One of my favorites is the Pandemic episode, which talks about disease vectors and how they tend to fire up -- and quickly die.

The Secret History of the Future - A podcast about historical things about modern ideas that people don't know. Likewise addictive.

Brought to you By - A podcast about how major companies have shaped world culture through time.

Nice Try! - This one is really interesting. The first season looks at the various (failed) utopias that have been tried throughout the years and how they still affect us today. Like how Biosphere 2 almost killed its inhabitants because they got the math wrong, and how Oneida made silverware to fund their utopian ideology.

WorkLife with Adam Gant - A podcast that explores various topics in modern work culture and how to ensure that you're making healthy and productive choices. Sounds boring but it's actually super interesting.

Crazy/Genius - A podcast that looks at interesting questions of tech and culture, like 'How the Far Right Took Over the Internet' and 'How Has Netflix Changed Entertainment'. Just scroll through the titles. It's a fun one.

Court Appointed Another one from the same family that brings you Sawbones (above) and MBMBAM, a lawyer/judge (Mike Meadows) and his non-lawyer brother-in-law (Tommy Smearle, father of Syd from Sawbones, IIRC), talk about various legal topics so that the layman can get a handle on how the law works. They tend to be pretty funny.

I like Lore too, but I think he tries to be overly dramatic.

I don't do Sawbones. I listen to the dad and cousin on Court Appointed.

ETA: Goddamit, phone, you can either do autocorrect or predictive text, not both.

I think a little blurb about each of these or why you like them would be awesome for people reading the thread who might be sniffing around for new podcasts (COUGHmeCOUGH), rather than long cut and dry lists, buuuut that is totally just imho.

The Magnus Archives - The Magnus Archives is a weekly horror fiction anthology podcast examining what lurks in the archives of the Magnus Institute, an organisation dedicated to researching the esoteric and the weird. Join new head archivist Jonathan Sims as he attempts to bring a seemingly neglected collection of supernatural statements up to date, converting them to audio and supplementing them with follow-up work from his small but dedicated team.

Copied from their summary. I'm not a huge fan of horror but I am really enjoying this. I would strongly advise not looking up any of the episodes as you go even if you're wondering where you might have heard that name before. I did this and accidentally spoiled some of the metaplot for myself, and discovering it as the podcast reveals it is part of the fun.
