Triple post because apparently I think I own this board, but more importantly I've already heard from a recruiter. They're pushing my application through to the next level, where I'll do some kind of assessment. The ball is rolling.

@gryphter Maybe the new place you applied for called to check references?

It could be. Truthfully if this other thing works out, I do plan to take the new offer in as a negotiating tool and make it clear I'm leaving without a compelling counteroffer.

The thing that sucks is I don't actually dislike my work or my team, and the manager I can't stand to work with is no longer my direct and has the HR lens on him now. I've thought about it a bit, and what I need to stay is the promotion I deserved a long time ago. Nothing short of that will do it.

I'm not so sure you want any of my luck yet. Wait and see, and if it's good I'll gladly will some of it your way.

                Parent Teacher Conferences today.

One of my boys walked up to me during work time after checking the schedule looking very confused.

Boy:"Mrs. Are you seriously staying until 8:00 tonight?"
                Me: "Yeeep."
Boy: "And probably after so that you can clean things up."
                Me: "Yeeep."
                Boy: "Dang."

                  Boss' boss:

I understand that you really, really want the answer to "why are your sales down" be some failure of communication or process, so that we can set up an ambitious action plan to Turn Things Around with your know-how and inspiring leadership.

But no matter how much you don't want to hear it, sales are down because foot traffic is zero and there's nobody in the goddamn store.

Even I can't sell to figments of my own imagination.

That moment when you get an automated email inviting you to access a thing you need and you throw your hands up in the air because it means that a potentially-difficult colleague is not going to be difficult!

Dear Boss, while I generally think you're awesome, today you're being a dumbass. I have only ever done one case even a little similar to this and my coworker who is supposed to be my obi wan isn't here. So of course I did my best and did it the way I did the one sort of similar case. Wtf was I supposed to do, with the client in front of my face ?

Big progress today on the reemployment front! Around lunchtime I got an email with the assessment I'd been promised. I gleefully grabbed a conference room and completed it, and almost as soon as I hit 'done' I got another email from the recruiter to set up a phone interview.

Since I was so "eager to throw open my schedule to make way for this exciting opportunity", we had the phone interview immediately. It went great, and I'm confirmed for an in-person on Thursday! Probably my favorite memory with the current company will be taking a phone interview on speaker phone for another company in one of their conference rooms.

Some small bit of the balance redressed in my favor. Petty, but satisfying.

This is big for me because this change has been my back of mind private exit strategy for a few months. It's gratifying that as I'm becoming completely convinced of the need of it, it's proving to actually be viable. I do believe I'll get this job.

Finally, the light at the end of the tunnel. And with that, officially, good luck @Auspice -- you're welcome to share yourself some of mine.

I turned down continuing the interview process from the phone interview today.

For one, it doesn't sound like it'd be a good fit in general. What they need isn't something I have professional experience in.
For another, it's a month-long interview process culminating in a 2-hour on-site interview during which the bulk of the interview is a presentation...... for a 3-month contract.

I'm sorry, but I'm not gonna spend a month working my ass off on interviews, assessments, and presentations for a 3-month contract (I also need to be putting effort into getting hired before then). The recruiter understood and I have a feeling, based on her understanding, that she's been hearing very similar from a lot of people.

Sounds like they are operating like it's.... 1995? Maybe as late as 1998? Been reading a lot on the 'new workplace' and how people are not going to fight tooth and nail for employment with limited scope and no promises of anything resembling employer loyalty to said prospects. I work in the old school corporate hive mind where the idea of telecommuting and people working in their pajamas is a cardinal sin or some such. Course I see the fresh new executives showing up at the office once every other week and go to drop in offices wherever they feel like it. So there is some updating going on but it's only for the sons (and one or two daughters) of the executives getting hip to their kids requests for a more open and adaptable workplace.
That said, Auspice, I don't blame you at all for politely declining this rare opportunity to bust your ass for an amazing opportunity to be treated as a disposable asset. I think they are going to find very few willing to jump through their hoops for this chance at being employed for a whopping three months. The employment landscape is changing and in some ways, very much for the better.

Yeah, the recruiter was very polite and understanding. She said the market in Austin is opening up big rn for my career and suggested I keep an eye on their (the firm's) openings and to let her know if I spot anything that looks good. She also said they send out a weekly 'highlight' of a few people in their directory to companies and offered to put me in next week's.

So I think she understands, 100%, that what this company is asking is not reasonable at all.
