When you're going through a thing IRL and completely independently, by sheer coincidence and not even your own initiative, a thing happens on a MU* that just 100% resonates with that RL thing you're processing and actually really helps.

In this particular situation it's a thing I feel like I can't talk to anyone about IRL, but then someone else's character decided to talk to my character about that exact same thing, through the lens of their own experience and fictional IC circumstances.

I've heard people say you shouldn't use MU* for therapy, and at least consciously, I don't. But I think that storytelling has therapeutic capabilities that even the staunchest of separatists can't/shouldn't deny. I have favourite books and shows and movies I return to in times of need; RP offers similar, yet without control or predictability. That's surely why in part you shouldn't use it for therapy, (plus not expecting/demanding/asking anything of other players) but when the stars align and something just somehow hits, it hits. It's powerful and it's precious.

So a scene today has left me really emotional, but in a really positive, helpful way. I feel seen — and by someone else's fictional character, at that, whose player had no way of knowing that their story could strike this kind of chord with me.

This hobby is great, and storytelling is fucking magic. For all the gripes and peeves this forum in particular is so well known for — those lows wouldn't be felt if not for the capacity for such ecstatic highs.

When you are once more so content in general that you can be oocly uncomfortable about a scene (not creepy-weird, that would still be a nope out) but still not want to run far far far far far away. Not good to feel weirded out but so good to be able to just muddle through it and extricate from the scene itself without wanting to immediately log out and just not come back for a few days. I'm going to say that means my stress level both RL and in regards to game is probably the best it's been since before the pandemic. And now I'm getting teary eyed about that, in a good way. Like maybe I'll get to be normal again!

                Act I, Scene iii

                (At a dinner party)

Host: Okay, okay! So, we're going to play a game! We'll all pick random questions out of this hat and ask them of everyone else in turn. (Everyone picks out their question) Okay, so you start, Guest 1.

Guest 1: If you could have dinner with three people, who would they be and why?

                Guest 2: Oh, definitely <three historical figures>.

Host: Oh, those are good! Umm. I'd pick <three other historical figures>.

My PC: My two cousins and my one cousin's daughter, so I can see them one last time.

                Pause.

Guest 1: I gotta run. (departs)

Guest 2: Okay, my turn. If you could witness one event in history, what would it be any why?

Host: Oh, that's a good one! Well, definitely <this event>.

My PC: My recently-departed family perished in a fire. I would want to witness how they were killed and who did it. (Beat.) I'm sorry, everyone, but they died horribly and I'm thinking of the unspeakably horrible things I am going to do to who killed them.

                Pause.

My PC: Um, so, my question. (Beat.) If you could make up your own holiday, what would it be and -- (Pause.) -- how would you celebrate it? (Smile.)

                FIN.

@ganymede These questions reminded me of one of Reddit's most upvoted posts ever.

I love the unique connection I feel with other people in this hobby who share my story-oriented mode of thought in a way that most people in my life don't. Even when we aren't actually talking about the games we play(ed) together.

Got a scene in this morning. There was a really fun moment in it that warmed the cockles of my black little heart. Just a highly relatable thing that the person I was RPing with posed and I just. UGH. IT WAS SO CUTE.

The cringe I feel reading old posts of mine on MSB.

Part of me is glad this place will be going up in smoke simply because it will erase all my cringe post history.

The reason this isn't a "gripe" but a "thing I love", though, is that it's cathartic. I'm glad my past self is cringe-worthy to me, it's an encouraging sign that I'm in a better place now than I was 2+ years ago.

A friend and I talking about someone we both know behind their back.

It basically devolves into a competition over which one of us has more compliments about how they're nicest, and kindest, and generally just the keenest.

When someone you super enjoyed connecting with on a game...finds you off game because you fell off (damn work). It makes me happy.
