BITN - 101 Scary Stories

When I look for inspiration for a horror scene, I often do a search for 'two sentence horror stories', and borrow liberally.

@Ganymede I remember this post! Though, sadly, most of the real shiver-causing ones are about kids. As a rule, I try not to murder people's children.

In terms of horror, I always feel like kids are a low-ball attempt to get a reaction out of your audience, much like everything associated with Human Centipede. I hope to run a few horror stories on BitN, but don't expect me to throw kids into the mix unless it follows the themes of either keeling kids safe or investigating the killing of a younger person (the killing would be off-screen, perhaps in a police folder, but never roleplayed on screen). Kids can be fantastic in horror, though:
- Newt in Aliens
- The People Under the Stairs
- Poltergeist
- Del Toro's Mama
I just feel that when it comes to horror, people sign up to be scared and not scarred. They want the amusement park ride with all of the screams and increased heart rates, but not really ever to feel like absolute shit when the story is over and they have to lay down in bed and think about it.
Delete the Hog Pit. It'll be fun.

They don't want horror. They want a cheap substitute for pornography. I wouldn't be interested.
Horror is meant to scar because it is meant to transform.
If you want horror without children in it, I've always liked The Descent.

@Ganymede I liked the Descent, found it scarier than The Cave or whatever it's main rival was.

I am, in general, not a fan of most horror. What I enjoy is the sort of "what if" situations that really make your skin crawl. Things that are bizarre enough that they don't affect my day to day life... Our world is simply too boring for that. But... What if it wasn't?
I don't like The Hills Have Eyes because it could happen. I've been out west and getting stranded is too real a possibility. Not to mention that I get frustrated with the silly choices the characters make. The feeling of hopelessness plus frustration... No thanks.
When individuals are forced to encounter the impossible, however, that's fun for me. Fun and scary. The Haunting comes to mind.

@skew I'm the exact opposite. The stuff that can happen is scarier to me than the stuff that can't happen. I used to love horror movies when I was a kid, but now they don't really scare me so I tend not to like them nearly as much.

I find what I really enjoy kind of depends on who I am with. I am really intrigued by disturbing could happen scenarios, but I tend to limit those to folks I know that enjoy/don't mind them, because I don't like to see people oocly upset. But that kind of thing is what really sparks my character development.
For general in public/freak-n-greet stuff I do like the implausible/WTF crept especially if it comes with some potential for humor (not necessarily slapstick, and not as a focus).

@Warma-Sheen I'm saying the "could happen" stuff is scarier, but in a way that doesn't appeal to me at all. Like, the world is scary enough, I don't need to relive the worst bits of it on screen.

@skew I'm the same way. I prefer my horror to be more fantastical because I don't need reminders of how awful the world already is. I've lived some of the worst of it.

The most scared I've ever been over a movie was the Towering Inferno. Granted, I was a kid but still. Count me in with the 'could happen is scariest' crowd.

It really is.
If you don't mind being essentially deafened by it.
(I have a really hyperactive flinch response to the 'hard-wired into our brains by evolution, you hear a child scream, you react' thing. This movie was physically almost torture.)
