@Arkandel for me it's because bright lights can trigger migraines for me and having a big bright white screen glaring angrily at me will do it reliably enough that I have my screen brightness/contrasts turned down so much I can barely see my mouse pointer in some programs. Granted, it's usually not just the light alone, I often need to be hungry and have some stinky jerk with too much perfume nearby, but yeah. White backgrounds are awful.

Apparently psychological studies indicate most people find white backgrounds more "professional" for reasons along those lines.

Consider: white backgrounds on reflective displays (i.e. paper, books, eink things like the old kindles, etc) are only as bright as the light shining on them. White backgrounds on emissive displays like panels and CRTs are always brighter than the background.

I get by using various in-browser css customization apps to make things more reasonable. Irritating to have to do it in so many places, and even more irritating when people tell me over and over that it's more "comfortable" to have a white background. NO! White background = pain.

I usually prefer a tasteful Morrel or Weimeraner color for my backgrounds- it is close enough to white that it reads as 'professional' but it's dark enough that it doesn't assault the eyes with the blazing fury of a thousand suns.

Heh, funny, the first ooc disagreement on Realms. I went with dark background because lighter (especially white) gives me a headache too. Someone offered to change it, for this reason I guess. Folks were happy on pub, but pages rolled in wanting the old one back. I felt bad for the change for those like me, but the change was pretty much liked by those who prefer white backgrounds.

If there is a good neutral one that doesn't cause a headache on its own, let me know, please.

This is why I think every professional website should have at least 3 themes. Bright white ones for normals, dark, muted ones for defectives like me, and some for colour blind people.

Visual Novels need to say whether or not they're a Comedy or a Tragedy. That is, does it end with horrible things happening, or does it end with everything being generally okay? Half of the ones I've personally played lately (two of four) were split and I want to be more aware of my purchasing decisions.

Can you explain the concept? The wikipedia entry is a bit confusing ("Typically the majority of player interaction is limited to clicking to keep the text, graphics and sound moving") since that doesn't seem enticing - is it a CYOA kind of deal?

It's a graphic novel with sets and (lightly) animated puppets, tho it's about the reading. Sometimes there is voice acting. Sometimes there's choices to be made (a la Choose Your Own Adventure). Often there is ambient music. I heard about "acted out audio books" so think of something more like that. It's a form of storytelling and if it's compelling or not is entirely subjective. I don't play racing games for the same reason, and like everyone on the planet I'm going to bitch about a play, movie, tv show, sporting event, or book that made me disgruntled.

And I expect to be mocked for it, just like everyone else.

For me, it all depends on the frequency of choice for them. I like my Visual Novels to have a pace similar to some dating sims in which you have a moderate chunk of plot and then a choice, rather than extremely long tracts of text before the next choice comes around.

There's a game by Winter Wolves called Loren the Amazon Princess that sort of blends visual novel/dating sim and RPG into one bundle... and I think it's simply glorious. Season of the Wolf is another game like that, though I haven't had a chance to play it yet.

I've been watching a Let's Play of Danganronpa which is one part visual novel and one part mini-games about a mystery. As a way to further part, I like the visual novel motif. I just keep getting caught up in stories that end with "and everything goes to shit". Thanks, guys.

@Thenomain Yeah. I know how you feel... I got hooked on some of Dadealic's adventure games and every. single. one that I've played ends with "And it all went to shit." Whispered World? The Deponia series? No, fuck you. And Night of the Rabbit? Semi happy with a cliffhanger ending of "It will all go to shit." Damned German developers and their Sturm Und Drang.

In minor gripes, I installed Spanish, French and Italian keyboards/languages on my phone. The way it's SUPPOSED to work is that you switch languages by swiping at the spacebar on the touch keyboard, and it displays the language it allegedly is using.

This is a lie.

Every time I type and the spacebar reads "English", I am flooded with suggestions of words in every conceivable language BUT English.
