Getting a sense of what sort of MU* ads are okay

I began to lurk on this board about a year or so ago when I was looking for places where the more roleplay variety of MU*s were discussed- MUSHes, MUXs, MUCKs, etc. As time's gone on, it's harder to find places like this, which brings me to my question:
Would it be generally frowned on to post ads for anime/manga and/or video game themed MU*s on here?
I ask because, about a year ago, I've seen one ad for a new MUSH be pulled because around one or two people were criticizing it in the ad thread for being a format they didn't prefer. Since then, I've been cautious about advertising the newer places I'm on, since I didn't want to unintentionally throw a place in a bad light for advertising on the wrong space.
This probably has to be the only active places I know that deal with MUSH and MUX formats, so I figured it was worth it to ask, especially since I haven't seen it happen since.

@Tanyuu There's an entire forum specifically about posting MUSH ads: http://musoapbox.net/category/5/adver-tis-ments . I don't see why it'd be frowned upon.
I don't think there's any format requirement for it... but you can look around at a couple of posts there to get an idea of what and how ads have been posted up before if you like.

I mean, some people ARE assholes about a MU* with a theme or write-up they aren't into (that poor guy who posted about Flights 'n Tights comes to mind). But that's on the assholes. I'm not into anime but I'm generally happy to see anything in the medium up and active and trying to attract players.

To sort of add to what they're saying -- posting an ad here is allowed and encouraged (particularly in the forum for such!), and if you've been lurking around here as long as you say you have been, you'll know that you'll need to be at least moderately thick skinned to do said posting. I can't imagine that any ad thread was actually pulled by the admin around here for the reasons you've stated -- it may have ended up moved, but removed? That sounds like a misunderstanding of events on your part.

@Sunny Oh! Sorry, I wasn't being clear. Yeah, the admin did not pull down the post, and I have no reason to suspect they did.
And I get what you're saying, there. If the MU* was something that I had a hand in, I'd probably just post it in the advertisements section and be fine with it all. However, since I'd be posting ads for MU*s I don't have a personal hand in creating, I'm being a bit more cautious on that front and gauge how people felt about it.

It probably doesn't matter if you're not part of staff if you want to advertise a game you think is cool - you might be doing us a favor.
The only exception I can think of is MU* whose staff don't want advertised, if for example they're still in beta or for any other reason. -
Understandable. Yeah, it's not something people are going to go 'how dare you post a game of that format here!!'...but it will probably get a fair amount of flak. Not necessarily because of the genre (though somebody might get crabby about that, who knows), but just because that's how things often roll around here.

I know I criticized an ad here before. I laughed at an ad designed to generate interest in a plot happening on a game where the "interesting" event was a ... trash bin fire.
You will get people commenting--in varying degrees of acidity--on the efficacy of your advertising approach (especially if the ad is terrible like that one). And if your ad is filled with spelling errors or formatted in ways that make eyes bleed that will be dumped on as well.
If you're advertising someone else's game might I recommend clearing it with them first, though?

@WTFE In fairness, when the best thing you think your game has to offer is literally a dumpster fire, you might need some therapeutic ribbing. Just sayin'.

It wasn't even a dumpster. It was like an office's circular file. This was supposed to be a big, intriguing mystery: "WHO STARTED THE FIRE AND WHY!?"

And see? If it's too bad, they will not only mock it in the thread, but for years to come as well. I'm not trying to be discouraging! I am just concerned that you are hesitant about unleashing the hounds and thus want to make sure you are well braced for impact if it does happen.
On the bright side, there are a WHOLE LOT of people around here right now that are looking for something new, and A Genre Beyond What They Are Used To is probably actually something that might appeal more now than it has in years past. It's totally worth trying.

@Sunny On the plus side, if people are picking at something that's really just not reasonable to pick at (I'm thinking of the Flights n' Tights one here), people will call that out pretty quickly, too.

IIRC there were two criticisms of Flights'n'Tights. One was the invalid "ew, gay superheroes!" one. The other was calling out the "we're inclusive" thing paired with the "no girls!" thing juxtaposed with it. That latter one is valid, IMO.

Oh man, I remember that one! That was an... interesting read, if in an arena of MU*s I'm not as familiar with.
