      Hi! My first post.

I'm looking for an ACTIVE sci-fi mu*. One set in space, or with the potential for space travel, would be ideal.

By active I mean: steady playerbase of at least 10 people and staff that cares (and interacts, preferably).

I am not picky about the universe (original ones would be fine too), though a super-complex RPG system is probably not for me.

Thanks for any help you can give!

@Ganymede Thank you. Any idea how accessible the game is if you are not super familiar with BSG? One can always learn, of course. 🙂

My half assed effort to start one has gone quarter assed lately.

Pretty accessible. The BSG Universe is somewhat realistic; it's just set in the future. They have a wiki page you can read through: http://bsgunificationmush.wikidot.com.

There are a handful of semi-active Star Wars games right now...I think? Fires of Hope and Dawn of Defiance are the names that come most readily to mind. I keep meaning to check them out but...motivation, you are a fickle fiend.

These are both great games, from what I've seen and played.

I found it weirdly distracting to see that I have an identical radio and dog-bowl to the ones used by these space people from other planets.

Makes you wonder about whether dogs are truly man's best friend, or whether we have been conditioned to believe so.

It's not even our future, it's a parallel version, which makes it even more nonsensical.

But then, the Star Wars movies use WWII props, so... eh... it's Hollywood.

                          Then explain this:

                            @Ganymede It's like everything I thought I knew is a lie!

Back on topic... @egg We try to make it accessible to folks who have not seen the show. There's a cliff notes version of the theme on the wiki. That said, it's more of a war MU* than most "sci fi games" so YMMV.

@Three-Eyed-Crow I like SW as much as the rest of the populace, but have heard that the RPG systems used on these games tends to be difficult to learn...you or anyone else have experience with them?

@faraday Nifty. About how many folks play on a daily basis?
More war-themed is probably not my first choice, but not necessarily a turnoff, either. Active players who don't suck and staff who care are more important. 🙂

@egg Sage Edition is a variant of d20. If you know d20, the transition is pretty smooth. There are also quite a number of players--at least on Fires of Hope, and I'm sure Dawn of Defiance too--(myself included) who are happy to help build +sheets for people.

You can read a semi-brief intro to the system here: http://firesofhope.wikidot.com/event:2017-02-23-combat-primer-ooc

@Seraphim73 Oh, very cool. I haven't played d20 in YEARS (and years and years) but I'm at least no stranger to it. Very nice that people are willing to build +sheets on there. I am not the most mechanics-y player around, so that's something in favor of that game.

Dawn of Defiance is dying for the moment. There's a small clique that is somewhat active and a few randoms that pop up from time to time but the headwiz left and left the game to another wiz a -lot- of people disliked and distrusted so most ppl left it.

The other good thing about SAGA and these games is that the CGen and help files are very robust. You could feasibly learn the system just by checking out all of help files. Plus, searching online for .pdf compendia is easy.

We're small. Our who list generally runs around 10-15 at peak times (late evenings EST). But the players we have are pretty active, and there are regular missions to participate in. I like to think we're friendly and don't suck, but that's really for others to say 🙂 I am the only staffer and I care, FWIW.

Also since you mentioned sheets - we use FS3 which is super simple to go through. I'm happy to help with mechanics and there are roster chars to take if that's your thing.

I've heard good things about Fires of Hope too, so that's another good one to check out. I don't play there though.

@magee101 This was referred to by many as the tacobus. Feel free to infer what you wish about it. Second that game was handed over to nutjob & spouse it was time to abandon ship. (anyone else ever notice the trainwrecks that always accompany nutjob&spouse games?)
