I think this behavior is as inappropriate as what he is accused of, personally. Kind of gross, tbh. Two wrongs don't make a right. I very much think that any issues here can and will be resolved by good staffing without people taking things into their own hands like this.

@Sunny Yeah, creating a character for the purpose of manipulating people OOC to get an IC result sounds pretty bad. I assumed it was a joke though, not a suggestion.
-
It's ok for a character to plot and want to destroy another character politically, but yeah, I'd definitely not allow it for the sole purpose of screwing a player over. (Note, I was certain that was a pithy comment on Custodius and not an actual game plan)

Well, so much for the slutty-bunny I was putting together.

ANOTHER one?

Does she make any other kind?

The fuck you on, pal? I don't play them often!
Only recently.
And Galina's not a slutty-bunny. She's just played that way. If it's wrong to be sexy-vampire-Hitler, I don't want to be right.

@Thenomain While that's kind to me, the game would be nothing without the rest of staff I have absolute and total faith in. Hellfrog in particular has an incredible talent for cultivating the kind of atmosphere that the game is being praised for- that is far, far more her work than mine. While you've had your problems with her, anyone that has spent time with her sees her immense talent in this way, and why the game has such a healthy and vibrant community, and moreover why I have complete faith in her maintaining that.

You can't trust someone until you see how they act, or until someone who knows you tells you that they're trustworthy. Otherwise that trust is a gift, and no game staff should squander that yet they do, time and again.
Everything, everything that is the trauma of Mushers comes from this, from staff abusing the trust of players, from players abusing the trust of staff. Even "abusing" sounds too proactive in some cases which are just down to people saying they care but don't, or people saying they're being helpful but aren't. In the Court of Public Opinion, just one person's say-so may not be enough. Even five people's say-so may not be enough (exhibit one: VASpider). But it's a good start, one with healthy gamer caution.
Your vouching for them comes down to:
So far @Apos has been reacting 100% professional (sic) about his game, and that falls into the "show don't tell" category of earning it.

At this point in the game the people who can shine are the ones who can dig into the lore of the world, and the ones who can be social. That leaves the explorers and the soldier types somewhat threading water for the time being. I'm sure other concepts, too.
But I do know that the whole dynamic exploration ideas is going to offer something to both sorts.
I'm going to chime in here for a moment. As someone playing one of the more exploration-focused characters I found on the roster (basically, I ended up playing Lara Croft), I've actually had good luck asking the staff for tidbits.
Like, I can't run out and explore things yet. But if a chunk of lore comes up, I can go, "Hey, staff. People are talking about <thing X>. Have I seen anything in my explorations that would relate to this thing?" And certainly sometimes the answer has been "no", but sometimes the answer is "yes, and <insert infodump here>." I've actually been handed a fair amount of information this way, which I then try to run around and spread out, to seed other people looking into things.
(Admittedly, I don't know how successful I've been at that last part, but I've at least tried to make a point to find excuses to spread info and stuff around with people other than my core RP group.)
So if you can think of something you could do ICly that's hard to do right now OOCly due to a lack of an appropriate system, I highly recommend putting in a +request with details just to see if there's some information you could be handed. I.e.., if you don't have investigation, using the investigation system is going to be a little bit painful, but maybe you're a merchant and think you could try to get information about <topic X> from traveling merchant NPCs you do a lot of business with. It might take them a couple of days to get to, but in my experience they may well give you a clue or tidbit of information about current things.

@Sparks If you play who I think you play, your efforts to spread the love have been successful and very appreciated!

Thanks! I've tried. Sadly, this week I'm stuck on a business trip (which proooobably confirms who I'm playing), and that means I'm sitting on several bits of information I got Sunday evening and haven't yet had a chance to scatter to the winds.
I'm looking forward to getting home and having time to get back into things!
-
@Caryatid Do you think she plays who I think she plays?

She plays Apostate, obviously.
-
@Kanye-Qwest Nah. She types better than Apostate.

I was looking at Arx but didn't realize that it was a roster system. In the experience of those playing there, do characters change hands frequently? And how jarring is it?
I found Dystopia, similar in that it had a roster system, had to get settled into as other people connected to your PC would change hands or wouldn't be active and so your immediate sphere of RP would be kind of tough to get going. Not sure if its like that on Arx, I'm just a little gunshy of this style.
Also, I'm a little uncertain how much information the application for a roster spot the staffers want? Not knowing a ton about the game world, my reaction to picking and requesting a specific character is more like 'that sounds like an interesting challenge'. But I don't have at the same time, any sort of strict plans - I don't know enough yet to really articulate social calculations.
-
Woah, hey!
I PLAY LARA CROFT.
Damnit. Stealin' mah schtick. >.>
(Not actually upset. I just recall it being the joke when I began playing Lou: 'She's basically Lara Croft.')That aside...
I've seen Staff on Arx handle situations. They handle them swiftly, appropriately, and without calling attention to them (aka risking more drama). Honestly, it's a large part of why I keep playing (even if RL has been crazy). Hard to find a Staff you can feel so chill with. -
@GangOfDolls You can CG your own character. Staff will even set a metaplot secret. Some roster characters have been played for a long while. Some have changed hands. Some were shelved and yet to be picked up. Some have yet to be played at all. Some were killed.
It really helps to find an org you like and players you get along with. Some are definitely more chill and less drama than others. Sometimes you IC connect with people and the OOC is off, whether it's scheduling or being less of a priority than initially believed or whatever. It really blows if that other character is important to yours for whatever reason. In those circumstances, it might be trickier or more sucky than at a non-roster game, but it's still possible to find other avenues for plot involvement.
ETA: I took a character off the +roster and my app was only a few sentences long. It more or less was: This character seems fun and has a role that I find enjoyable. I believe it will be a good fit.
