Later in the game, you'll really have to buckle down on your strategy. Even at Max level, you'll get your ass kicked quickly if you don't start exploiting enemy weaknesses and such. Yeah, it could probably use a bit of streamlining, but learn it like your life depends on it. Because it does.
That's one of the things I like about RE7 so far. You can't just stand there and get wailed on. You -can't-. An axe to the chest will fucking kill you dead. You have to block and dodge and move around and use the environment to your advantage.
The story is terrible, but I expected no less from a JRPG. I just wish that Square ENIX would put out something for Western consumption that doesn't feel like a subordinate dumpster fire.
I didn't mind it so much. I mean, yes, by some standards they could have done better, like with the invasion that they pretty much just glossed right over so that you could move along to other things, but overall it wasn't awful.
