I've been playing both Doom Eternal and Fire Emblem Three Houses and I have different thoughts.

Doom Eternal: A revolution of the FPS genre, potentially the most impactful FPS since Half-Life 2 or BioShock or COD4. I am unsure at this point how id can top this. Hugo Martin should be held in the same esteem as Corey Barloff and Amy Hennig.

Fire Emblem Three Houses: I will love Shamir forever.

Persona 5 Royal comes out at midnight. Which means that, responsibly, I won't be able to start it until tomorrow evening after work. 😭

@Testament What makes DOOM so great? Call me a jaded FPS gamer that has gotten to the point where all run and guns games seem to just be the same, so what makes this one stand out over other FPS games?

The gameplay loop of Doom I guess. The game intentionally doesn't show you in ammo and health. It makes you play aggressively as possible. And I admit that very gameplay loop is very addicting. Or at least, to me it is. Glory Kills give you health, using the chainsaw drops ammunition, lighting demons on fire makes them drop armor. But all of these abilities are dependent upon you being as in your face with them as possible.

Are there callbacks to old Doom and other games like Unreal Tournament? Sure, but I think we've become so satuarated with corridor shooters that require a lot of pop and duck mechanics, that something like this is so refreshing. And the fact that it's been so refined. It just plays perfectly so far as the game engine. If I have any complaints, it's the loading times, which is, whatever.

To an extent, I feel you. Personally, I couldn't stand military shooters like COD or Battlefield. There's almost a Souls-like sense to this game. Because even on normal difficulty it is a brutal thing to play. It's frantic and driving. And it will punish you for not being fast enough. You will die. A lot.

                      And frankly, I love it.

                            I have been Bannerlording some.

Also wow, I was a hell of a lot better at this when the original came out, I can do archery, at close or medium range, but melee combat? Hah! Without a shield I am completely helpless and I can get attacks off in the direction I intend maybe 40% of the time? Then again the AI sometimes goes weird in sieges and lets you stand behind a mass of soldiers chopping them in the head and killing dozens of them, which makes up for my gross incompetence. Occasionally.

Every tiny little thing about the FFVII remake has been making me smile. Anyone else getting all up in the NPCs personal space to hear their conversations?

The couple in the slums arguing because while she was supposed to be at work in sector 8 and he was supposed to be at an interview in sector 1, they were both cheating on each other at the time of the reactor explosion and got caught where they weren't supposed to be? Made my day.

This is how you do a remake. All the extra conversations and exposition are amazing. And hearing the NPCs talk about food shortages and how ugly people can get when there's store rationing going on really hit home for me, as the stores in my area are limiting customers to 2 of any item and only one cart & it seems ridiculous how selfish people can be in even quite civilized places.

                                I love Greedfall.

It's not the most polished game. It's not the most original. Yet the story and quest-writing will remind you of Dragon Age: Origins or The Witcher series in their depth. There's really no "fetch" questing, which is great.

Combat isn't perfect, but it has its challenges.

But it is really pretty to look at.

I was about to avoid it after reading a review in PC Gamer by Lauren Morton, but then I realized that she was caught up with the sort of minutiae that I don't give a shit about.

@Ganymede I just picked that up recently, but it got put on the back burner until I finished Doom Eternal.

I had been wanting to ask if it was any good. The controls feel kind of loose, though that's said after literally only 45 minutes of playing yesterday morning before work. And combat seems odd. Not bad so far, but odd. And challenging.

You can tactically pause the game to target particular enemies, if you're using ranged combat; however, I have not tried that because I went with a Battle Mage loadout* (and am loving it). Combat can be very challenging against the Guardians; it's not as punitive as Dark Souls or combo-driven like The Witcher. Where the game shines is in its social interactions, story line, and gorgeous environments..

                                    • -- You go full-on cleric. Take a mage and focus on bumping your Stasis tree with skill points until you get Shield of the Enlightened and Magic Healing, maxing out both; then bump your heavy-weapons track; then take Storm and Fury after. Meanwhile, raise your Strength and Endurance attributes. And, given my play style, I stuck points into my Vigor talent, then into Charisma, and then into Intuition.

I want the FF7 remake but I'm also pretty much only playing Stardew Valley rn (it's relaxing, it's low-stress, and it's a world in which I can be consistently productive and make money.... the perfect escape).
