Stranger Than Fiction MUX

@theonceler That's funny. There was a LOT that could have been done with that game, but the (tiny) Staff had a Very Clear Vision of what they wanted, and that's fine, they made the place, but it stifles things and... This happens.
-
@quinn You were after my time, then. And fun, re: rando showing up half way through and stealing the scene.
That's what was frustrating - it was a good idea for a game, but ineply run by, like, 2 or 3 people who ran everything.
-
I once put in a request to run a PRP since their ad here, the ad that drove me to play there, said they were PRP friendly and wanted players to assist building the game.
What a fuckin lie that was.
To the day that the game ended my request sat in the jobs queue untouched. But they DID eventually post that you needed familiarity with the theme to run PRPs. And how did you get familiarity with the theme? By being in the abundant plots that never got run.
-
@theonceler Yeah. I learned a while ago the hard way that players are going to do what they want to do, and it's better to say yes and get out of the way. If you expect people to only make the kinds of characters you want and tell the stories you want, don't run a game. Write a novel. Or a play.
-
I mean, when I joined the game here's what happened and it should have been a huge red flag:
A carnival came to town! It was part of a plot. They even built a place on grid for it. A board post said RP would get you into the plot! Me and two or three other people RPed there every. Single. Day. No plot hooks were thrown our way. Eventually, other people started grumbling about this. A new post was put up that people in Group A were getting first dibs on the plot, but to get involved just RP with them!
Someone on the public channel then pointed out the post didn't say WHO was in Group A so how was that possible? They were assured there would be a way in.
My character was a huge goody good, so I put a request in saying I'd like to try to talk to someone in charge to see if she could do like, a can drive donation one night to get people discounts on tickets and help!
No reply. Finally staff comes back and says that won't be possible. the people in the plot don't want any more people in it.
So. The original post was a lie, I guess? A bunch of people stopped logging in after that. I should've been one of them!
-
@quinn Probably because Griff was in Group A with his friends, and any more players in it would be too much for him, so they capped it. Which SHOULD have meant you open a Group B. But then someone has to run Group B scenes, and when you have all of one Staffer running plots and won't let players run things, that never happens.
At the end of the day it was a sandbox for him, with things run by his SO, and being open to the public meant he had a pool of people to audition for his limited friend slots.
-
So what were the other games they ran and who were they?
-
I have to agree with TNP here.
-
A couple people said their MO is to open a game for like 6 months, get bored, and open another one. I think Lantern Hill was one? I've definitely never played on one of their other games, so someone else will have to confirm.
-
@quinn
The advertisement style was in the same style as Dark Things (a not-Buffy/Secret Circle type) and a few others like Lantern Hill. Also when I tried to go to their wiki it loaded the Shadowhunters MUSH icon on Chrome, so maybe that? -

<rubs face>
A Team: "We just want our little clique to have this fun!"
Staff: "OK!"^ Clearly, these people have been taking the Spider-Certified Game Management Certificate Course and acing that shit.
-
I didn't really do RP but I was Jessie if anyone wants to keep in touch. I guess I just couldn't reconcile with being a perma-teen.
-
I asked you to RP so many times!
Well. Twice. Once per character.

This shit honestly baffles me. Just...run a private game if this is what you want to do. There's nothing wrong with that, you'll take zero flack for it, it's a far more appropriate way to do some types of campaigns. Why open a public game when you don't actually want to run one?
-
@three-eyed-crow Same reason as Spider: 'stars' require an audience.
-
@three-eyed-crow I'd guess because they want to hunt down more people to bring into their private circle, but that's just me.

Staff = A Team, more or less.
This guy and his wife open a game.
He will usually drop staffing to focus on his character, the center of the game, plots, etc etc. But I remember on Shadowhunters, he'd log into her Staffbit sometimes, so he was still making calls.Basically whatever he wants, goes.
So for all intents and purposes... This guy, the Star/Group A/whatever you want to call it... is Staff.

Almost the same thing happened on The Point. A thing with raffle tickets, where the dude who is the staffer's partner mysteriously won. I was told that in order to get in on the plot, I would have to talk to him, so I messaged him, like, "Hey, I was told to talk to you to get in on x!"
Staffer starts messaging me and tearing me a new asshole because I apparently was rude and demanding to him.

If there isn't an audience for your coolness, does it really happen?
-
@theonceler Having fun isn't as much fun without people around to look on in envy!
(Pardon, I need to go take a scalding shower now after just typing that.)
