@mietze One of my nephews looks exactly like my oldest brother. The thing is, my oldest brother is my half-brother, and he looks like HIS father, who's no relation whatsoever to my nephew. It's sort of uncanny.

This should go in politics but I don't care.
We've got concentration camps being set up in the States, and I feel so angry and so helpless because I can't do anything to stop it. You can't just storm the Bastille these days--they've got machine guns. And a friend pointed out that as a lawyer I can help people, and yeah, I can, but while my cases wind their way through courts children are literally dying of government neglect in these facilities.

It's maddening, isn't it?
And with mapping programs and sites you know exactly how long it'll take to get there. But my father tends to leave like, five minutes before he has to be somewhere a 30 minute drive away. Because he convinces himself it'll be close enough. -
I was raised that if I'm not early then I'm late. So I am now super early to everything. v_v

This. Same.
...but my husband is the Puttermaster General. I have genuinely never seen a person be more able to find new and creative ways to completely waste time and/or be perpetually late due to dazzling levels of sheer inefficiency.
I have taken to lying to him wholesale about when we have to be somewhere, giving a target time of anywhere between a half hour to an hour before the actual time to be there, and we are still barely, if ever, on time getting there if he's managing things.
There are days I genuinely can't imagine how he functions in the world like this, and others, I simply marvel at it all.

These people are walking thousands of miles and lining up just to get into these "concentration camps".

The fact that the conditions asylum seekers are fleeing are worse than detention is not an excuse. Do you know why my asylum client came to the US with her kids? Because a gang had come to their church during service and murdered her husband in front of his children, his wife, and his congregation. During this assassination, they also murdered a mother and her toddler, two men, and a young girl.
If you're trying to be sarcastic, it's because you know fuck-all about the world outside your comfortable life. Grow a sense of moral courage.

Another work rant:
I like the guys I work with on 2nd shift. I liked the guys I worked with on 1st shift.
I cannot stand the guys on 3rd. There's the pretentious ass who is, I guess? threatened by not being the only one who knows computers anymore. Excerpt from tonight's passdown:
Me: 'They finally fixed <program we use>.'
Him: 'No. I fixed it last night.'
Me: 'They released an update for it. It's fixed properly now.'
Him: 'I fixed it last night. It just needed a tweak in IE.' (a tweak that IT passed down to us and I passed down to him the other day, but w/e)
Me: '...they patched it. It works in IE and Chrome again.'
Which set him to muttering that 'oh they probably just downgraded it' (which is also not what happened but whatever; I gave up at that point)There's a guy who is blatantly racist. As in 'will complain about how 'bad' other races are and when it's pointed out that most of his coworkers are non-white, pulls the 'well they're the better ones' card.' He's also the one who, after not doing his damn job the other week, tried throwing me under the bus.
The last guy does his job, is OK to get along with, but is never. on. time. Every day he works, I know I'm gonna leave 15-20 minutes late waiting for him.
Which almost makes him the worst because it means I'm stuck sitting around with the other two guys.

I'm a big believer of calling things what they are not using hyperbole or ridiculous comparisons to get points across. We do not have "concentration camps" on our borders. Using that phrase belittles and demeans both what is happening now and the actual concentration camps that existed during WWII(and other times).
What we have are centers that appear to be offering inhumane and barely livable conditions to people we've invited to be guests of our country. The conditions of these centers are unforgivable and the death rates are inexcusable. If we take them in and offer them any form of shelter then it is our responsibility to take care of them and offer them shelter until such time as they can be properly processed through the facility. It's atrocious and needs to be addressed but calling them concentration camps is ridiculous, inaccurate, and only opens any arguments about these actual centers subsequently made to casual dismissal. Call a thing what a thing is, don't shoehorn it into something it isn't.

This is patently incorrect.
From the Encyclopaedia Britannica: "Concentration camp, internment centre for political prisoners and members of national or minority groups who are confined for reasons of state security, exploitation, or punishment, usually by executive decree or military order."
They are not death camps, which seems to be where the confusion arises, but they very much are concentration camps.

Uh, no. They're refugees that your government has imprisoned without charge, trial, or any other form due process.
I'm a big believer of using words accurately, not what suits a particular belief or comfort level. The term 'concentration camp' was coined (or at least gained widespread usage) in the very early 1900s during the Second Boer War to describe the "refugee camps" set up by the British authorities in South Africa.
Prefer whatever terminology you like, so long as you know you're the one demeaning what is happening and has happened, not us.
