Well, if the title in the infographic is to be believed, it means that the number presented is the number of male suicides for every female suicide, so in France for every 10 women that kill themselves, 32 men kill themselves, whereas in Spain that same ration would be 37 for every 10, and in the UK it's 38 for every 10, etc.

Racism isn't Tinkerbell. It doesn't need you to believe in it for it to exist.

        I understand that part. πŸ™‚

What I don't know how to interpret is in terms of the political climates (in 2012), what it meant for the gender roles in those nations, what the root causes were or for that matter why the enormous disparities existed between countries basically neighboring each other. And certainly that gap between East and Western Europe... damn.

I don't know how anyone could interpret that from this image that seems to exist only to be shocking rather than informative.

That's not to dismiss the male suicide rates, because I hope it goes without saying they're horrible and we need to do more to help suicidal men. I just mean this infographic seems downright irresponsible unless it was clipped from some larger piece that provides more context and analysis.

            Interesting way to phrase this.

I remember seeing some sport commentator complain about Simone Biles choosing not to compete for mental health. He threw a fit saying no one would be that kind to Lebron James if he took a mental health day. He was saying they're both GOAT athletes and no one would let Lebron do that (which sounds awful). But the rebuttal from a few good folks suggested that yes, even Lebron James should take a mental health day and he probably hides it with like 'ankle sprain' because folks would be harder on him.

I'm just a surge protector doing my job, sir.

It's really not useful, no. I mean, it's a good representation of actual numbers but the causes behind them are so varied and diverse that you can't really draw any conclusions just from the ratio itself. There' no magic bullet answer there.

Just from a perusal of the available data, I would say that a major driver would be the difference in alcohol consumption and alcoholism in general / drug use, which is a significant driver, but hardly the only one.

This sort of graphic is what hapens when you take, like -- alll the mountains and valleys on a continent, measure their heights, and then add them together for stuff like 'Average Altitude of Asia'. It's maybe interesting as a side thing but doesn't really tell you anything terribly valuable.

Racism isn't Tinkerbell. It doesn't need you to believe in it for it to exist.

That sports commentator is an idiot.

Kawhi Leonard took "load management" days off to keep himself physically and mentally ready for the playoffs, and people shrugged and said "that's Kawhi for you."

Any high-level athlete should be able to take time off for their physical and mental health if that's what they need to stay at the top of their game, and not have that decision questioned.

I feel so worthless, but I know I just need to recuperate.

I wish I could help, could figure out something more helpful than just stupid words, but you both have far more value to your communities than what you produce in any particular day/week/month/year (and honestly, more than what you produce period, but that's a rant for another time).

Everything will still be here when you have the energy. If you forced engagement when you're not feeling it, we run the risk of burning you out forever. NOBODY who plays with you wants that. Patience is better. Time away from brain-y hobbies that require much thinkwork is not just helpful, but necessary to remain healthy.

My youngest sister -- about a 14 year age gap, who at times in our lives actually has felt more like my daughter than my little sister -- decided spontaneously that she had to get married to this guy that she's been seeing for a little less than three months. Three months.

I've met him all of twice, and on the day of their "civil ceremony" (not what they consider their "actual" wedding for a long list of reasons that are all related to ultra-religious Mormon stuff too impenetrable to dive into here) I had a near-panic attack when I realized that a) if you lined up a bunch of blonde twenty year old dudes, I would not be able to pick him out and b) moments before I was going to greet them I literally could not remember his name.

I am trying my best to be a good big brother and show my love and support, and I absolutely did openly express my honest concern and doubts about this whirlwind marriage to her (along with our other sibs), but she pulled the trigger anyway and boy oh boy do I feel like she's made an enormous mistake, and it really hurts. I feel like there's going to be a lot of pain and regret in their future, especially because we've already seen some big shiny red flags with this dude, but I have to just smile through it right now.

I hate this a lot, but...people have to live their own lives, I guess.

@wizz If it helps, my wife and i got engaged like 5 months into our relationship, and married the same year. I moved in with her like...3 weeks after meeting her? This year will be our 15th anniversary.

So I start a new job on Monday. Retail supervisor still, but better than the one I've had since March. (& that better than being unemployed after my last company folded up.)

This job is like the poster boy for "nobody wants to work for you anymore" that's been going on the last few months. Management pay isn't terrible but the associates are getting minimum wage with a chance of commission, so we're supposed to have at least five but we have one and she's the teen daughter of one of the third keys.

The District Manager was in today talking about how he thought they'd start getting applications in again after the eviction moratorium expires. And that's my actual peeve. Dream big I guess; "this job is better than homelessness, so we are entitled to a steady supply of applicants."

I switched my job of 16 years to a new one simply because of scheduling and needing a sense of contributing more to society.
