My RL gripe is that time moves ever onwards.
Avril Lavigne's "Complicated" is twenty today. This is unacceptable.
Yeah, I felt like that when they said Eminem was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. The only formal criteria for the performance category is that an artist has to have had their first record 25 years ago. I died inside a little.
5 minutes ago when I read that Mark Hamill was 70.

Sometimes I wonder how much of my absolutely childlike lack of knowledge of how my body works can be explained by me growing up in the Bible belt. I'm not even talking about sex stuff; I'm talking about stuff like how I get ingrown hairs if I shave too often or how to clean my ears properly so I don't make my ear buds disgusting. I feel like this is stuff that I would have learned if not for an underlying assumption that my body is sinful and therefore shameful to discuss.

While there's certainly an aspect of that to lay at the feet of the Bible Belt, that's not all of it. Medicine itself doesn't truly understand the female body and how it differs from the male body. Up until about the 90s, women weren't even really taken into account when it came to testing drugs, and updates in how female hormones/organs function and what sort of care/upkeep they require come slowly, if at all, even now. Mammograms haven't really changed since the 1900's. There hasn't been an appreciable update to how to check for breast cancer other than to cause a woman pain and discomfort. Same for pap smears. All the updates to tech and medicine we've seen, you would think there could have been improvements made to either or both procedures. Women still struggle to be taken seriously for any sort of medical complaint, even by female doctors. And this carries over into other things like shaving, skin care, perfumes, makeup... I mean, it's finally, finally just now starting to come out that 'hey, makeup is bad for your skin and you should limit how much you wear and for how long'. And it's still largely being dismissed even as the evidence stares us right in the face. Literally.
So! Yes, being in the Bible Belt doesn't help (hi, raised in Iowa), but that's not the only part of it. I moved away from the BB when I was 18 and quickly found that it doesn't really matter where you go, poor understanding of how the female body works (even to the degree of the similarities between men and women, like shaving) is still rampant.

Based on my experiences, men from all backgrounds really suck at understanding how the female body works.
-
@ganymede A lot of women have a poor understanding of how the female body works. Bible Belt sucks for having an extra level of 'your body is sinful and you should do everything you can to never acknowledge it', but it's bad everywhere.
-
To be fair, most men don't know how their own body works, much less a woman's.

I know all the bits of mine that don't work. So by 50 I'll know my whole body rather well.

Look, if I can't make a sex joke here, where can I make one?

fuck today. Just fuck it. My friend died last night, there's construction in my building, and my work computer doesn't want to work, and the management company for the building thinks they are going to just walk in and turn off the water in our apartment.. for no given reason.
-
Damn. That sounds like a rough day.
-
@derp they sent the head construction guy... which I let in to do it, because he's just doing his job, and he's actually really nice to the dog. But they could have said "Hey, during construction, we may need to come into the apartment" Last week when it was starting, and covered their asses.
This management company has been total shite, though. And their text response to me telling them we prefer 24 hours notice, had a glaring typo in it (Shit instead of shut, which I have done in RP, but never in a work correspondence!)
-
@macha Do you want to talk about what happened to your friend?
-
@greenflashlight It was cancer. It was deemed terminal long ago, but he'd kept one step ahead for so long.. no one really saw the end coming. Just last week we were talking about food cravings.
ETA: Not related to friend's passing, but construction is super loud, driving the dog nuts, and then my IT ticket didn't actually GET into the system. I teams messaged an IT guy, no response. An hour after I tell my supervisor, she puts a ticket in from her end. I'm about to blow my stack.

Man, I wish I could find it now but....
Just last week, I saw a reposted Tweet from some dude who admitted that it wasn't until he was in his late thirties that he learned "women have a second hole for peeing".
Considering that this was shared in a group composed almost entirely of women, the responses were savage. And also hilarious.

I do recall an article, I believe about Indonesia, where the divorce rate was up and the birthrate was down, and the cause was the couples couldn't figure out how to have sex.
