Good or New Movies Review

Amazon Prime has The Changeover available for rent or purchase.
You may or may not be familiar with Margaret Mahy, but she's probably New Zealand's most beloved author, and I read The Changeover as an adolescent and absolutely loved it. The movie really does it justice. The casting is amazing, and the film unpacks a lot of the theme of transitioning into mystical power as a transition into adulthood thing. The film is eerie and creepy and suspenseful without being gory, and has a sort of starkness to it that is interesting rather than bland.
Seriously though, is there any media where Timothy Spall isn't a fucking creeper? He's downright scary in this.

Went and saw it and my experience was "meh". It just felt like something they had to do so they could get to stuff they REALLY wanna do. Not a terrible movie overall but, IMO, one of the weaker Marvel movies(above the likes of Thor Dark World or Iron Man 3 but way below Guardians of the Galaxy or Avengers: Infinity War).
Now that I've viewed the movie, 'meh' is about how I felt about it, too.

Without any spoilers I enjoyed Captain Marvel but I felt it took a dive in the last 20 minutes or so. This is a complaint I also had in Black Panther as the movie became a bit of a special effects pasta instead of staying strong with the character development arc that had worked really well for the rest of the film.

It is very rarely that I would advocate going to see a movie in the theater, given prices in my area, but I would recommend experiencing Us (if you like horror movies) in the theater.
The movie is tightly put together and was really well done.

Shazam! was fun.
I expected it to be great, though, and it wasn't. I felt a lot of its best, funniest moments were in the trailers.

RE: Shazam, I loved it. I think it's right up there with Aquaman and Avengers: Endgame. I liked it so much I'm planning on seeing it again. Is it perfect? No, but the problems I had with it were very minor. I thought the cast had great chemistry, it mixed humor and seriousness very well, and I left wanting to see more.

Did you, like, already see Endgame, or..? LOL.

@Coin I meant Infinity War. Though given the amount of stuff that has come out in the trailers I kind of feel like I have seen Endgame.

Really? Because while the latest clip is a bit more than what I expected at this point from the Russos, they haven't really showed anything beyond that. I thinkl people are super sensitive to trailers now-a-days.
-
I thought they were doing really well up to the last batch or so. I don't want to say what ruined it for me in case others haven't seen it but it just showed something I kind of wish they hadn't. In the end, I guess it's pretty minor and I'm still super psyched for the movie and all they just showed some stuff I wish they hadn't.

I feel like people are expecting these movies to just be like a constant stream of gasp-worthy surprises. Like, probably not, there will probably be a majority of the movie where it is logical action and sensible character moments, lol.

So. Hellboy.
My review is this: The only thing enjoyable about it was David Harbour as the big red man himself. He really did totally own that role. They also did a great job with the depictions of this iteration's bad guys and villains to fight.
The rest of it was...not really all that memorable. While I was not expecting much, the overall story was pretty derivative and generic. The pacing was all over, and it felt like they tried to throw in an encyclopedia worth of exposition throughout a lot of the movie which only contributed to that feeling of disjointed pacing. I think they could have better spent the time information dumping on some character development, instead.
Unless you are a super fan for Hellboy, catch this one on Amazon or Netflix after the dvd release.

@Jaded I enjoyed individual performances, mainly Ian McShane and Daniel Dae Kim and the girl playing Alice.
But the film was pretty much doomed as soon as they cast Jovovich. Not necessarily because Jovovich is a bad actress (which she kinda is) but because with rare exception, her movies are always high level ridiculous.

From what I've heard, it's not "ridiculous" that's on everyone's reviews of why the movie is bad. Hellboy can totally house a lot of ridiculous elements and still be great, as a concept.

I've not read any reviews, but its not Guillermo so I felt good enough waiting for Netflix on this Hellboy.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer.
-
@Arkandel The Palpatine laugh.
-
@Seamus (I'm not putting spoiler tags for a trailer) I think it's a fake lead. There's no way they can bring someone like that back in the final episode, it's too late to build him up.
-
I was a little surprised. We barely see Adam Driver at all in the trailer. Makes me wonder if they're gonna backseat him.
