Popular settings done differently.

We've all seen stock nWoD, sandboxes, L&L based on simplified mechanics, etc.

Doing something completely radical might have a niche but throwing some assumptions aside and modernizing an 'old' favorite instead of copying much of what came before with a facelift could be interesting.

That way you can have players ready and interested in what you're doing without repeating the mistakes of the past (you can instead make new ones of your own ).

But say, don't do another City by Night nWoD; maybe a Vampire/L&L hybrid set up redneck country where the bloodsuckers are getting stalked by angry Werewolf rednecks pissed off about some old family drama. Or it's Star Wars in the Old Republic and your PCs are all Sith trying to beat the fucking tyrannical Jedi who've established a tight-fisted theocracy across the Galaxy.

I can feel the collective eye-rolling from here (and it fuels my ennui), but you asked as well as I'd like. I've seen Bland By Night so many times that I kind of don't want to see anyone try it again.

But if you do, lets talk about code.

Also: Possibly a superhero game where I don't have to be an expert on the genre to play or enjoy.

What favorite settings do you have that you would adore playing in and being a part of, that simply don't exist anymore, or if they do, need a new breath of life pumped into their lungs?

Nothing springs to mind for me here. "See Above" would be one answer, but I think that even more talk about WoD/CoD is not useful, so I won't.

I wish to subscribe to your newsletter then! I think there'd be a lot of interest. To my knowledge there isn't any right now: there's DC/Marvel games that allow OC characters but that's it.

I second @thesuntsar that I would be more likely to consider a supernatural horror game that eschewed the usual teen/college drama cliches and maybe wasn't set in a small town in America. Go big. Go Noir. Like London, New York, or some other familiar, dusky urban playground. As a bonus, the first two have a literal underground/subway which can make for a pretty neat setting.

On the note of "London Underground", if people open more supernatural/vaguely horror games, I'd sort of love to see someone even attempt a game in the vein of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.

I can foresee limited hiccups with the FS3 combat engine. It worked fine for Fifth Kingdom, so I know it can handle melee combat reasonably well. In talking with Faraday about a Mass Effect game, the combat engine is malleable, a position that is seconded by Tat and Seraphim73.

Trust me, I got this. I know it can work.

Had a better idea, actually: make them just like attacks, but with different skills and checked stats.

For example, when you do a melee attack, the attacker basically rolls Attribute + Weapon Skill, and that result is checked against the target's Attribute + Dodge Skill. For a fire spell, that could be adjusted to Attribute + Fire Skill against the target's Attribute + Resistance Skill. Basically, instead of "+combat/attack <target>" against a target, you do "+combat/fire <target>". Basically.

I also think you can remove the stances, and modify the stances into buffs and debuffs, respectively. So, a Protect spell might put your target into Cover (without the modifiers to hit), and a Weakness spell might put your target into Aggressive (again without the modifiers to hit). Something like that.

Healing? There's already healing built into the system (as I learned with Daithi).

I just need a coder to work with. If you're in, man, let's start talking about system, and then move into world-building.

Also, by putting the "magic skill" into the Action Skills, you force people to pick and choose how good they are going to be with magic, and that will take away from their ability to defend themselves against physical attacks.

Physical Combat: Unarmed / Melee / Evade / Ranged
Black Magic: Fire / Ice / Lightning / Curse
White Magic: Cure / Protect / Revive / Bless

Maybe a smattering of important "rogue-like" skills.

Rogue: Awareness / Craft / Stealth / Tactics

Something like that. And everything else are background skills.

Especially if you give it some kind of cat fight twist that's clearly obvious OOC but might still trip characters up ICly. Did the Blazing Wonder really hook up with Fantastic Horse's sidekick/girlfriend Megafox while they were trapped in the X Dimension? Find out next week!

ETA: Granted, that might be more suitable for a tabletop set, or for inter-group tension. I'm not sure how you'd set that up to be MU* wide. Unless there are several competing shows.

What would be really interesting there is if you could have logs of the action scenes, the "on screen" stuff, and then some sort of mechanics for analysing the logs for ratings. Like, was there a Surprise Revelation? +100 ratings points! Did a fan-favorite villain show up? +50 --Did he get punked and it was clearly too easy for the heroes? -100. So on and so forth.

And then have the various super teams conspiring and competing for the highest ratings, maybe with perks to their teams for being in the top slot (suit upgrades! Fancy lair! etc.)

And the villains, if you have PC villains, could gain fan followings so that shows with them became highly boosted for popularity, so that super teams were sneakily trying to convince them to agree to drop a hint about their next attack so that a specific team could be the one to head it off, etc.

The first things that come to mind are Western and Fallout, but I repeat myself. Because I feel like Fallout is at its best when it kinda feels like a western.

Totally agree on this (despite knowing that it will cut out some players entirely who only want to play Indies/Rebels/Empire/Jedi/Sith/Whatever). Fires of Hope tried to do this, but wasn't tightly-controlled enough in Chargen.

You don't even have to make this a different command. All you have to do is have a Fireball weapon--each weapon is already set up to use a particular skill. You might need a little tweaking for the default defenses, but it shouldn't be -that- hard. But yes, you could absolutely create a "combat/spell <target>" system that laid alongside weapons in combat. Then your weapons list wouldn't be as long (although you'd have a whole other list).

You could, but I would do what @Ganymede suggested. It's not that FS3 can't be made to do spells, it's just that it doesn't come with a magic system built in (because of pitfalls in trying to implement a generic magic system, coupled with the fact that magic just isn't really my thing and I can't be bothered). So yeah, you can kinda sorta hack it with weapons, but if you want it to work well, it requires custom code.
