A (Mildly Complete) List of Current Games

This is almost depressing. This is it for mushes? ...thats sad. Its like watching the last few dinosaurs meander around the rats scurrying at their feet. Remember when the number of active, real mu* seemed almost endless?

@secretfire There are probably a fair few more honestly. MSB is not the be all and end all source for all things MU*

Definitely not, but we're also a small community and likely to know about other games through word of mouth even if we don't play there personally. I'm sure there are some games not listed, but I wouldn't think it's a lot.
-
Please keep MU* info articles separate from complaint/review/recommendation articles.

I probably also read this when tired so the subtlety sort of whiffed by me like a slow walk at a 4 year old's teeball game.
I actually kind of like the idea of a block chain of these lists just because there lots of games out there that aren't visible to us, but they're visible to someone.

tbh it kind of surprises me anybody would be surprised, like
even ignore everything about how text is a super niche medium since, God, probably like Everquest I guess and how most people just age out of literally anything and honestly the rate here is probably like 10:1 exit:enter at this point
and it's still a deal w a community that's spent years sheltering time bombs and e-weinsteins cus "well they're fine with me" or "wow that's a friend of mine maybe you're the problem," is full of and plenty of times on games run by people playing like, larp high school politics trying to be the cool kids they never were, has (esp on comic places, which were my usual thing) t o n s of dudes still hanging onto grudges from when they were kids like 20 years before I was even born, etc etc etc all in addition to the usual narcissists and crazies that will make everything about them like on literally every other single social media outlet that has or will ever exist
like, i used to proselytize a lot and i tried to get girls i worked with who were cool and into stuff to start playing shit, mostly WOD but once or twice comic places and
four months was the longest ever and that was one person, mostly nobody made it a month period
it's hard to bring people in, esp from non-stereotypical-gamer backgrounds, when vorpals and vaspiders and claremonts and (super old example but someone who went frothing obsessive psycho on me and "oh that's just how he is") psyjacks aren't just around but are sometimes considered pillars and protected
like, my surprise isn't that there are so few
if anything it's that there are so many

I must completely agree. My opinion on this is that we are very dismissive as a community to anything that doesn't match our personal, direct experiences.
Folks ignore the fact ours is a shrinking hobby because they can personally get RP, or they've personally helped someone new get into playing (which is great, btw, don't get me wrong) despite how playerlists are becoming shorter and more games shut down than get opened.
Similarly people these days get all up in arms now about some bad players ostricized by the community but they befriended and defended them in their hayday, ignoring tangible warnings to the contrary when it didn't fit their interests to take them more seriously.
It's how we are, and that won't change. It's why I think sites like MSB, TMC, etc are important to have around just so we can look at our community as a whole outside of our own bubbles and maybe readjust our opinions based on others' experiences as well.

This thread has a lot of words and surprisingly none of them are on where I can get the best TS.

I'm optimistic, really. We have challenges, both cultural and technical, and an often hostile community that doesn't really provide a good foundation for games to succeed, and knowing all the shortcomings, I'd expect I would be pessimistic about the future, but I'm just not. There's a lot of roleplayers out there in newer generations, and MUs as a format still offer some things other games just can't. Brand new players are rare, but they do happen. I'm newer, after all, relatively speaking.

@apos I'm actually very glad you said that. I only learned that this hobby was a thing about a year ago, which was also when I signed up to play in my first game. I was kinda blown away by the fact that shared stories and RP existed in this kind of sphere for so long. I can see how difficult it is to get the foot in the door and also stay in it as well, it becomes a real test of wills after sometime.
But personally I like it. I also realize I'm half the age of most folks who have been in this hobby for 20+ years, but it feels like it's got a lot of interesting places to go.
-
@dreampipe Welcome to the Jungle, we've got fun and games, don't go near the monsters, they will bring you pain! idk, I tried to make the last bit rhyme. Anyhow, welcome to MUing.

Yeah. Can confirm, new players incoming. I need both hands to count the number of actually new new players I've met in the last year or so, and that's just me personally having directly spoken to them. I've heard of a bunch more. They're out there. It's not in the numbers it used to be, no, but it's not the molasses trickle some people seem to think it is, either.

I have never found the common refrain of 'It was so much better in the 90's' at all informative of my own experience. I have been playing MU* for the same dino amount as most of you give or take (off and on, but active enough) and I've found the quality of games gets better, it is much easier to find a playgroup that shares your level of engagement, (old person with children and grown-up job, handful of hours handful of days a week to college-kid I MU*alldayeverydayhaveyouevertriedJolttowashdownthecocaine) and levels in between!
I find a lot of positive in the community too, I've made both lifelong and shiny new friendships through MU* and that's worth every evening something has aggravated me. I have certainly come across horrible people too, but I'm not sure the ratio of fine to amazing to horrible is that different than any other community. Maybe the anonymity of the net skews a little to horrible, but not enough that I've wanted to forever storm off.

Whenever I hear this in regards to mushing I always wonder if they lived through the same 90s I did.
Not to say I didn't have a shit ton of fun back then but I would be very hesitant to all anything from then better. It was different some of the issues were different but I would also agree that from a qualitative perspective if not a quantitative one things have gotten better not worse.
Of course I don't tend to have much a sense of nostalgia in general. -

On day, in the not too distant future, there will be just MU. And it will be WoD. And all coffee shop RP, all the time. (Maybe with a bathroom for the TS.)
It's basically this hobby's version of the entropic heat death of the universe.

Text allows for infinite possibilities and yet, we're still tryna fuck in a dirty gas station bathroom. Some things never change.
