You can do a lot with bar/coffee RP if you think about it.
Darts can be a wonderful and terrible thing.

Iβm going to rant.
Bar RP is not bad.For the record, I agree completely, so I put it in quotes for those that disagree. I tend towards social first and foremost, then towards anything plotty with those that become IC friends.

Bar RP is not now nor has it ever been bad. Iβm going to offer a pair of middle digits to anyone and everyone who pisses on Bar RP for being Bar RP.
Bar RP is not inherently bad.
I personally find Bar RP painfully boring, for the same reasons I don't like just going to the bar or a party and hanging out in RL.
If it's fun for you - great. Go forth and Bar RP. But it's not fun for everyone, and that's OK too.
-
There is nothing wrong with Bar RP, but there is ALSO nothing wrong with not wanting to Bar RP. Like was mentioned, with adulting that has to be done, some of us have limited RP time, and if I have a choice between something that will develop my character and is interesting to me, vs. sitting in a bar and trying to find a reason why I'd actually interact with someone's random PC? I'm going to choose the non-bar RP.

The more options you start packing into a single command, the less intuitive it is.
scene/start name/location=description/timeofday=event/posetimes=publicprivate/faction=scene runner/scene secondary ... is totally intuitive to me.
Ah, I see you're familiar with the syntax of our
goal/rfr
command on Arx.(It's not quite that bad, but
goal/rfr <goal>,<story beat>=<IC explanation of notable progress towards goal represented by story beat>/<OOC commentary for staff to take into account>
is not what I would call an ideal syntax. It's just like... roughly the least-horrible syntax you can pack those things onto a single line with.)The best part of moving towards web interfaces is that you can collect a lot more data at once for a single operation, in a lot more natural manner: web forms are very good at this. Single command lines in the legacy telnet interface are not.

I love the idea of a WoD bar event that is speed dating with mortals, changelings, werewolves, and vampires.
- Changeling is looking for a widow to siphon sadness juice out of
- Werewolf is seeking Kinfolk who don't know that they're kinfolk because Father Wolf demands the seed is spread
- Vampire is seriously looking for a 20-something AB Negative with insecurity issues because that's all she can drink and the last one died in a firebombing.
- Mortal is looking for a mature, fun-loving single adult who wants a monogamous relationship. Fan of hockey, pickleball, bocce ball, and HBO TV series a serious plus.
Aaaaaaaaand let the cameras roll.

I get a lot of mileage over random scenes.
- Erin meets girl. Gets concussion bashing her head on a bunk.
- Daithi is in the market talking to someone when a boar runs through. Attempts to wrestle the piggy to the ground, gets injured in the groin.
- Maddy is playing pool. Gets into argument about how shaken milk does not bring young men to playgrounds.
And so on.
-
@Ganymede I did enjoy letting loose that piggy on you.
-
@Ganymede haha good stuff.
Gotta hang on to that part of you that can turn a broomstick into a Jedi lightsaber that is the one tool of defense standing between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire, led by Darth Vader, who is your little brother, Steve.
Broomsticks are boring, but with some fun...

I enjoyed the shit out of that too, but the premise -- spontaneous event in a public place -- isn't very different from "bar RP."
-
Bar RP is like any RP. It can be the most spectacular scene imaginable, it's just down to execution.
Incoming blathering .02 with a dash of personal RL perspective...
@Ganymede explains perfectly why most of the people I hear talking about not getting RP will not benefit from additional tools. They cannot bring themselves to use the ones already there, so they're not going to use a +wantrp command, either, because what if the other person says 'no' anyway?
Which is a thing I didn't see mentioned, but wanted to throw in here: the flip side of the coin is, some people have RP they want very much, story beats for character development and etc., but won't trust in the hands of just anyone. It's never going to wind up on a public wantrp command. People are still going to feel left out. OR, as people said earlier in the thread, they literally cannot plan their RP fun around random stranger RP, because they are time-poor or exhausted because work/family/whatever.
I loved Faraday's 'RP wish list' on BSG so much that I am totally stealing it for a thing I'm working on, but I don't remember seeing much of it get run by players, if any at all. It doesn't hurt to have it around. It might only help. But it won't fix the problem.
I really think people have to learn to engage. Besides, these are useful interpersonal skills to have in any arena of life, and this setting is pretty consequence-free as a place to try it on (I'm talking like real, serious, lasting consequences, not MU* drama). There ARE good, kind people out there doing this. I have met many. They'll respond well to honest efforts that have everyone's enjoyment in mind -- whether it's social anxiety causing the speedbumps, or a lack of experience with storytelling, or just plain shyness, or whatever. Even figuring out how to approach people and create a good connection from which to work together is pretty useful daily life stuff...you know?

Hi!
This was actually a player effort between me and @Seraphim73 that faraday kindly put into action. We wanted a way to be able to share things we wanted to see happen. Either scenes, plots, etc. So we got faraday to put a page on the wiki that we could edit and add our own lines onto. Stuff like:
Susan - Making a beer run on Caprica.
Bill - Getting shot in the leg.
Jamie - Getting into a bar fight.
Georgie - Firing on Centurions with makeshift weapons. Then, people could add their names in to ideas they liked:
Susan, Bill, Jamie - Making a beer run on Caprica.
Bill - Getting shot in the leg.
Jamie, Georgie - Getting into a bar fight.
Georgie, Bill - Firing on Centurions with makeshift weapons....and us player STs had a ready-made-list of ideas we could roll with (and the easier ones like 'beer run on Caprica' worked well for quick and easy RP ideas).
(I think a lot of why ideas didn't get run was that most of the things ON the list were @Seraphim73 and I trying to populate it and thus it was stuff he and I -- the primary player STs -- wanted run for our characters and a lot of other people didn't really add to it. Once again, it was something that was awesome in theory, but didn't get used as much as we'd like.)

The post above is an excellent example of players coming up with an idea, and staff running with it. It doesn't require any more code-tools; it only requires the implementation of an idea.

I said this in another thread, but what I've learned from MUSHing I have applied to many parts of my personal and professional life. Conversely, what I have learned from my personal and professional life I have learned to apply to my MUSHing experience.
I'm good at engaging, so I should engage. I'm good at politics, so I should politic. And I'm good at supporting people in their endeavors, so I should do so in the virtual world. Applying all of these things is good practice for when it might matter more.

Okay, here we go since I'm using it this evening. An example of the scene summary in use on Ares (since it was being discussed earlier in the thread:)
-
...okay, so it only shows up for Open scenes, not private ones, even if it's your private scene, looks like? But on my tests it didn't show up anywhere I could find on the Active Scenes page regardless, which I'm almost positive more people use to look for one. I saw the post way too late to be able to check Auspice's.

It only works for open scenes, yes (and I messaged faraday to confirm this). I pulled that screenshot from my alt because I wanted to make sure it was visible from !your PC.
-
@Auspice - @Ninjakitten is right, though, that it doesn't show up in the active scenes list or active scene pages. That's just an oversight, which I can fix in the next patch. If folks want to be able to see it on private scenes they're participating in, I can add that too.

What OP describes has been a great source of frustration for me in the past. People have hours to spend bantering in the public channel or the foyer room, but are standoffish at the prospect of actually playing the game. I think this is mostly a cultural issue with MUSHes. I haven't experienced it on other RPG mediums.
