Never been into the NBA, but even then, I find myself feeling a bit sad.

I'm in shock. What the hell.

I mean, it's too bad for his family and friends and whatnot that he's dead (and my daughter is saying his 13 yo daughter, with him?) but his 'heroic' stature is more than tarnished to me by his 'but she wanted to fuck me' defense in the rape trial he bought his way out of.

WTF Does That Mean Kobe Bryant

@eye8urcake I'm hearing there might have been more than one daughter with him - but nothing solid yet. I hope not.

I'm not a huge NBA fan, but Kobe's been around a long time, so the idea of him being gone is weird.

I hope his kids aren't dead, and I'm not glad he's dead but the wave of 'OMG LIFE WILL NEVER BE THE SAME' shit I'm seeing from people I know are rabid about not letting people buy their way out of criminal cases, specifically sex crimes, is nausea-inducing to me.

@eye8urcake Can we not do that on the thread about the guy's death?

@Macha I listened to his most recent interview on All The Smoke a couple of weeks ago where he spoke about coaching Gianna's team (while Tracy McGrady coached his own kid's team) and how much Kobe loved doing that since it was about pure basketball.

Apparently another parent+child was with them on that helicopter, going to a game.

@Arkandel So you can ooze your admiration for the guy all over the place unrebuffed in the thread, but I can't chafe at that and rebut? Got it.

A man (and his daughter) died. Some of us are really taken back by it. It's in poor taste (IMO) to sneer about it in a place where people are trying to come to terms with it.

If you wanna speak poorly about him, go do it in RL Anger or the politics board; no one will stop you there. But this thread is for mourning the dead.

It's for mourning the dead...except for when it isn't? This is the same forum where, in similar threads, people have posted 'X has died' and it's been followed by a host of "I'm glad he's dead!" posts. I honestly don't care either way but the hypocrisy found in this forum is often hilarious.

There is a point here, folks. Why is this objection not OK and others have been?

tbh, I haven't been cool with it the other times, either, but the other times have been for political deaths (IIRC) and uhhhh...

Frankly, I felt if I'd said 'hey, this feels uncomfortable' over, say, people cheering on a Republican's death, people would've labeled me a white supremacist.

How about we decide as a community to keep announcements and mourning in one place and criticism in another?

                                      It’s 2020.

I suppose we could just enact an official policy.

It's not that I disagree with the general sentiment -- let the dead rest, keep the things separate -- it's the timing and nature of how this came across. The issue here is that there was a rape trial the guy bought his way out of, which makes people pretty sensitive. Previously, when people have commented on issues that dead people have had, there has been discussion, good and bad. When the rape thing is brought up, the conversation is shut down and 'keep it separate' NOW becomes an issue. I don't disagree that it is an issue, but I am upset that it is only becoming an issue when it's someone's sports hero and the issue is rape. That hurts.

IMO it seems to depend on who has the objection. Or the comment. It doesn't just happen on this thread. It happens on others too. If you're just noticing that, congrats, you're not at max cynical mode.

I was not a fan of Kobe. I despised his style of selfish play (and selfish everything else). But as a person, this is a tragedy that hit home for me. I felt it. Good or bad, he was a substantial part of my basketball experience for a lot of years through the TV screen.

And I feel for the other families that lost people on that crash who will inevitably get overlooked or minimized while people express their sympathies for Kobe and his family. They lost people too. No one who has that happen to them should have to also feel less important than someone else who went through the exact same thing. I know that's just how people are, but it still sucks.

I think I understand your perspective, but it doesn’t change what I am suggesting, which is that we generally not speak ill of the dead in this thread. All of the reasons you have stated are what I would cite to in support.
