I watched it once in English and absolutely loved it. Then on a whim I fired up an episode in Japanese to see how the voice acting was.

Oops, I rewatched the whole thing in Japanese. And the lead voice actresses absolutely nail the poignant bits in Season 5.

And now it seems to no longer be available in Japan, which is garbo.

Snowpiercer is an enjoyable show, but it’s nowhere near the masterpiece that Bong Joon-ho’s film was.

It kinda makes me wonder how stupid showrunners must think American audiences are, since the major difference I noticed between the movie and the show is how obtusely the writers felt the need to spell out all the themes in as literal a fashion as possible.

In the movie, they show the protagonist moving from left to right as he progresses through the social classes of the train. They jump straight into class warfare without explaining or ever even directly mentioning the word “class”. They just assume you get it.

In the show every other spoken line is ‘eat the rich!’ and ‘this train is a fortress to class!’ Like no shit Sherlock, we understood that by your ragged clothes and their jewellery.

They also dumbed down a lot of the moral complexity and erased any room for guesswork in the narrative. The movie sets up the dominos and reveals the missing pieces gradually; the show just tells you everything you need to know upfront because it seems to assume you’d be too confused and frustrated otherwise.

So anyway I recommend the show, but watch the movie first. (Or even instead.)

That was really, really good, lol. I saw what it was and laughed, intending to watch a couple of seconds, and now here I am having finished it. I'm impressed with a lot of things about it, but particularly the actors' ability to convey emotion and intent.

Agreed. VLDL is under-rated in general, but this was some quality YT entertainment in my book. I hope they get all the views.

                      @ortallus SKIP.

The one skit with the guy falling in love with the NPC was brutal, though!

From what I understand, he IS coming to the MCU. It's worth noting that I think I read somewhere that Taskmaster and U.S.Agent had dealings in the comic books (or maybe that was BattleStar, who is, sadly, dead, because tropes.

Yeah, quick Google shows in Earth 616 Battlestar was trained by Taskmaster.

Also yeah, looks like Taskmaster is the antagonist in the Black Widow movie, which should be VERY interesting/fun....

@ganymede So hey this is a couple days old but I have a lot of Thoughts about She-Ra and I'll take this as an excuse to word a few more of them out.

                                  ***=Rambling/Spoilers***

                                  click to show

So I've seen some people dismiss Catra's thing about Adora "abandoning her" going through most of the series, because Adora did ask Catra to come along when she defected. Which, yeah, true.

But, in context, Adora handled it really, really badly. She told Catra that she'd just worked out that the woman she'd watched abuse and threaten to murder Catra since they were children wasn't a good or trustworthy person, and because of that she was leaving behind all the plans that they'd made together and everything they'd hoped to accomplish. But Catra could come along too!

So, yeah, Catra has some really, really good reasons to feel betrayed and abandoned there. The most important person in her life just told her to her face that she rated behind these randos Adora just met, both because she would side with them against Catra, and in that Adora was willing to lead the Horde over what they were doing to them but not for what they'd done to her. It's really no surprise that she reacted... badly.

And so then Catra, without the thing that she relied on to keep her safe, did everything she could to make herself safe. Which, obviously, gets into the arc that culminates in S4.

Not saying Adora's the real villain or that Catra did nothing wrong, Adora spends the whole series trying to do the best she can with what she knows at the time. But Adora handled that about as badly as she possibly could have.

                                  ***=More thoughts, themes***
                                  click to show

Also just thinking about Mara's thing at the end, how "you're worth more than what you can give other people," and how that's at least as much of a running theme as the cycles of abuse.

The villains in the show (not counting the random monsters or like Tongue Lashor) are the ones who treat people like things. (Granny Weatherwax would have something to say about that.) Including Catra when she's at her lowest. Hordak, Horde Prime, and Shadow Weaver all do it in different ways, but it's constant. And Adora's tendency to treat herself as a thing is presented as a flaw, which I think is really cool and unique; it's a problem that she's so willing to sacrifice herself for the greater good.

Hordak actually manages to do the "people as things" deal and the "cycles of abuse" deal at the same time; he relates to other people as tools to his ends, and his ends are all about his own function as a tool for Horde Prime. He can't even conceive of another source of validation (and I really, really love how his whole thing of only talking in ominous villain melodrama comes down to how socially awkward he is). He treats people how he knows how to be treated, but Entrapta starts him on his path to redemption by accepting him for who he is.

I'm sure you've read this, but just in case you haven't: the First Ones writing on the crystal Entrapta gives him spells "LUVD."

My response to your comments are these videos by a YouTube critic who does an excellent job breaking down all of the themes in the series.

                                    Why Catra is important.

How She Ra Gives Us Hope.

                                    Lessons, shortly:

                                    1. Abuse is a cycle with causes and sources.
                                    2. Abusive cycles can be broken.
                                    3. Abuse is about treating people like things and objects.
                                    4. Villainy is about perceived safety.

The videos are really worth the 45 minutes to watch.

Also learned that, according to Stevenson, Light Hope and Mara shared something more than a working relationship, and the evidence is sitting there in front of us. And this just adds to your point about sentience overcoming functionality.

“It is better to live doing the things that you like. It is foolish to live within this dream of a world seeing unpleasantness and doing only things that you do not like.” -- Yamamoto Tsunetomo.

@ganymede This actually sidetracts into a concept on The Orville that I found to be a very unique take: artificial intelligence developing emotions through creating sub routines to increase efficiency when with someone.

It was. My only gripe is that the special effects for their powers and the fight choreography is not on par for contemporary superhero shows. But it was otherwise really good. Even the aging make-up effects weren't (too) jarring.
