@Auspice It really says something about good casting when: You read the first several books before watching the TV series and everyone is vaguely amorphous. Then you watch a couple seasons and read the last two books and suddenly EVERYONE in your head looks like the TV series. I can't even recall what they were like in my previous mental state.

Shohreh and Wes are beyond perfect.

The authors are very involved in the casting. Like Bobbie had to be from the South Pacific and tall af. When they met Frankie they apparently had an 'omg yes her!' reaction.

I love seeing them discuss the casting on Twitter.

It's becoming increasingly likely that I'm going to read these books.

I love Avasarala. Then I remember that our introduction to her is her literally torturing a person, and it reminds me why this show is incredible. It's rare to see any scifi/fantasy that does such an amazing job of showing how people can be terrible and good at the same time.

        Example: "You're not that guy. . . . I'm that guy."

Well, I just binge-finished season 3, and now I have to decide whether I'm going to read the books and spoil some of the best scifi I've ever seen on TV, or wait and risk having it spoiled.

...having seen that it's an ongoing series, I think I'm going to be making the switch to the books.

Netflix's Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. I'm only partway through the first episode and I am COMPLETELY bowled over. The production values are flawless and I am loving the characterizations, it's just...wow.

It really is good. I thought they were aiming more for a 'black in America' vibe (N.B.: I am a cis white male so this isn't any kind of transference to make it apply to me) but I thought they did a really good job with it.

I'm on the last episode and just realized that as the series progresses Domby's face keeps getting more and more messed up. Now I want to rewatch it as sort of a 'Domby's Greatest Hits (To His Face)'. I think with a little practice you can easily identify where in the series any scene with Domby is by looking at his injuries.

It's been a fantastic weekend for fantasy series between Carnival Row and Dark Crystal.

We're usually lucky to get one thing like this in a year, let alone two in a weekend. Spoiled as hell now.

                              Oh fucking well.

I'm pretty sure I watched Dark Crystal when I was little, but I can't really remember it; it wasn't a staple of my childhood. Would I still enjoy it without the childhood love?

I've never seen Dark Crystal at all! So I'm kind of in a boat of 'this sounds good and looks good visually but I have no reference material'

I'm still looking forward to Rick and Morty, Season 4, which is slated to come out in November, even though there was a decided drop in writing quality in Season 3. Like Game of Thrones, I will hold out for a while, even though I skipped Season 8 of that.

It's worth watching the original movie if you get the chance, if you like the series.

I wouldn't say the series is at all dependent on having seen it, as a prequel. There are some things from the film you can look at and say, 'oh, so that's why that was how it was!' but that's fairly standard for any prequel.

There is a reason my husband has reservations about watching the series based on having seen the movie, but it's pretty spoilery for anyone who hasn't seen the film when considered with a prequel like this one.

***=Major movie/series spoiler for those who haven't seen the film, and may not realize this going in.***

He wasn't sure he wanted to watch something with a bunch of well-done characters and in-depth story, knowing that all of their heroic efforts... pretty much fail and all of those characters are not going to make it, even if we don't see it happen on screen. Can't say I entirely blame him. He's still waffling, but we'll probably watch it over vacation if he doesn't before then.

I will give one 'quibble' to Carnival Row, they introduce a sort of steampunk aesthetic early on and it runs through the series in the background but then never really seems to do anything beyond being window dressing.

To be clear, I am neither pro-steampunk (why couldn't the series have had more!) or anti-steampunk (why did they introduce this!). I would probably have been just as happy with the series if they had leaned in a bit more or if they had totally done away with it. It is just that this sort of half-way state feels more like something unnecessary that was tacked on and it's a little distracting.

(edit: Actually, a second even more minor quibble is I don't like the wings for the pixies. One minute they are stiff dragonfly-like wings and the next moment they are flopping around. Then suddenly they have some ability to curve and curl them. Yes, I know that there's magic in this world as well as science so I suppose that their anatomy doesn't have to actually 'work', but again, this sort of 'we are going to take the easy way by just doing whatever we want with them' is distracting to me and shows a certain carelessness in writing)

Carnival Row is fuuuuucking greeeeeaaaaat, ya.
I actually really admire the show's restraint with the steampunk elements, keeping them as a background aesthetic and not remarking on them really makes the world feel lived-in for me.

As for Dark Crystal...oi. I want to love it, really badly, because the movie is a childhood favorite. But something about modern high-def film and the incredibly stiff puppets, especially the faces of the Gelflings, just...wigs me out, and breaks my immersion.
