RL things I love

  • Pitcrew

So as of today it's been exactly 8 years since my grandfather passed, and rather then you know starting a whole new thread I thought I'd just toss my thoughts up here since I loved him more then almost any other person in my life, and he was a great role-model for me.

He was a soldier in Korea, and spent some minor time during the later days of the second world war. By the time I knew him he was a fairly high ranking Employee of the ford motor company.

He never gave anyone in the family almost anything. You had to work for and earn anything no mater how close you were to him. Only things I ever got handed by him without having to work for it were a pocket watch handed down the family from one generation to the next, and an old maglight I still use today.

He meant the world to me and I loved him with all my heart. I still remember back when I was young any time we went to a restaurant he would bring along a set of three manila envelops. Didn't matter how little he was ordering.

He'd always put 1 dollar in the first, 10 dollars in the second, and usually a 100 dollar bill in the third (Sometimes he'd put in bigger bank notes just for the shock value, or stock certificates just to see the reaction on their faces.) He'd always tell them they could pick one and it had their tip inside.

Back then a dollar would have been worth about 6 bucks today give or take to give you an idea on how much he was handing out.

I remember one guy about feinted when he opened up the envelope and saw that funky looking bill inside. Asked a good four times if it was even real, and brought over other staff to check it out. He was real happy.

And I remember another time back on Christmas of 85 he was driving us over to his place in his car, and we see a guy on the side of the road. It was snowing really bad and he was just sat on the hood of his import car in the ditch with an axel broke clean off.

He turned right around in the middle of the street and drove us to the nearest Ford dealership, and bought a new car on the spot. Had pops drive the car back while he drove the new car then hand delivered the deed and the keys to that man standing on the side of the road because "No man in America should go without a dependable American made Ford." Still remember the look on the guys face when Grandpa told him that he'd better buy Fords in the future so it didn't happen again.

I miss that man so damn much, and I know you guys probably don't much care, but I figured I'd share either way because it means a lot to me.

A high school friend of mine has published a book on fairy tales in the media and cultures around the world. I think it is a fascinating compendium, even if it is very pricey.

I mean, just have a look at the cover.

Looks awesome. I'm going to get myself a copy once I pay off these new tires I'm getting this weekend.

  • @arkandel Ironically similar to the ending of Circle of Iron - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBFXvkpLFsQ (at 1:47:50 or so when he opens the book ... why yes, the leader of that cult in the funny pastel robes is Christoper Lee before his Dooku/signing the Tree Beard song days). The answer is: it is our fault (or in the movie, the wisdom we seek is withing us, but same concept I think).

  • Getting a call from work about that raise I was expecting.

...and being told 'Oh, we're doubling the raise. We really appreciate your work.'

  • Pitcrew

So I didn't get the job I was aiming for, which sucked.

But things will improve a bit. I'd put in for a new position at my current company. I got in today to find out I got it.

Still no benefits like PTO, but it will come with a raise. Enough of one to negate my commuting costs. So I'll be able to actually start paying off debt, getting this car shit taken care of, etc. (Maybe buy a desk so I can play games again?) slowly, but yeah.

Monday through Friday schedule. Hours during the week flexible: put in forty and I'm good.

And it'll be more properly tier 2. Less direct customer interaction.

Also working with a product that will look really nice on my resume in the IT world.

@auspice That sounds like a nice job, wish I could find one like that. I'd love to put in 4 10's or 3 12's and a four and be done...

With my fibro, 4 10s is hard. I'm more looking at it for the rare week of 4 10s for a long weekend or the days where I wake up and can barely walk, so coming in late isn't a big deal.

This is awesome! Routledge is one of my favorite cultural theory publishing houses.

  • Pitcrew

Maybe this should go in RL Peeves, but I ended up laughing so...

I've got one of those robodialers calling me. One of the IRS scam ones.

"This is an automated message from the IRS. We have received an affidavit concerning a lawsuit filed against you by the federal authorities so before things go worst against you....."

I didn't even hear the rest of the message I was laughing so hard.

I can't even delete the voicemail from the one earlier today.
I had to go listen to it just to hear that line again.

    Before things go worst.

  • Pitcrew

I for one am just happy the the IRS has finally modernized and started to accept iTunes gift cards for tax payments.

  • Pitcrew

The amount of affection and care I see in my patients and their spouses day in an day out warms my heart. I also love when there's an opportunity that arises when we can genuinely make a difference in how people who come in for treatment and care are feeling. I love my job.

    Stockholm, Sweden – 23rd April, 2018

White Wolf Entertainment, creators of the World of Darkness and Vampire: The Masquerade, is partnering with Modiphius Entertainment to distribute Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition (V5) worldwide in English.

Vampire: The Masquerade, the classic that changed role-playing games forever, returns in a fifth edition! V5 features a streamlined and modern rules design, beautiful new full-color art, and a rich story experience for new and returning players. Powered by the innovative Hunger cycle, the game also includes rules for creating system supported character coteries, Loresheets to directly involve players with their favorite parts of the setting, and Memoriam, a new way to bring the character's detailed backgrounds and expand on them in-session.

V5 is a return to Vampire's original vision, moving boldly into the 21sth century. While the rules have been redesigned, this new edition honors the deep story of the original, advancing the metaplot from where it left off and detailing exactly what has happened in the world of the Kindred up until tonight. The terror of the Second Inquisition, the conspiracies behind the Gehenna War, and the rekindling of the War of Ages: these are the building blocks of the modern V5 chronicle.

That makes me ridiculously happy. Your post is a thing I love!

  • @sunny
I got my tax return today. Pre-order is Saturday. I am quite content to drop money now.

ETA: And of course, the internet is now on fire. Someone is claiming that WW literally stabbed OPP in the back because they're using Mophidius as a distributor. When OPP clearly does nothing with tradiitonal printing and distribution, while Mophidius does.

  • Pitcrew

I just noticed the list of developers. OMG. Pre-order is Saturday? Yeah. I too will be purchasing it.

  • @sunny

This plus the opening of Mind's Eye Theatre material to Storyteller's Vault has made my month, I swear.

  • Admin

@bobotron Of course just because the preorder will be available soon it doesn't mean the final product will be. :) But that's exciting, as I do love the oWoD theme.

  • @arkandel
The article states the preorder will start shipping in August. That's not that far away. Even if it's delayed a little after August, I'll still be content. I'd like to see another playtest or pre-release info or something, but I'm expecting that in the summer.

  • Admin

@bobotron Now we just gotta get @Thenomain into cooking this shit up into a codebase.
