WELCOME TO THE EUPHORIA!
It's scrawled across the front of your pod when you open your eyes. Done in neon bright yellow and outlined in orange. It should be cheery but there's something a little unnerving about it. Still it gives you something to focus on. Welcome to The Euphoria. The timeless darkness of before is shredded by those words. You hear them now, too. A bright, chipper-- mechanical ---voice comes through the coms in your pod, "Welcome to the United Planetary Ship Euphoria, Crewmember!"
You roll your eyes up toward the source of the voice, and try to turn your head but you can't move. You try to flex your fingers, and toes, but neither obey your commands. Your heart starts to race, your pulse starts to quicken. You can feel it thumbing away in your throat underneath your chin. But that chipper, mechanized voice comes from above again, "Oh, no, calm down Crewmember! You'll be released in just a moment! You will feel a warmth in three... two.... one!"
It wasn't a warmth you felt at first. Instead it was a prick on your left wrist-- a sharp sting --and then suddenly a burning throughout your veins. Then pins and needles all over your body, as every part of you comes to screaming life after being asleep for ... you have no idea how long you've been asleep. That's what this was, right? Some sort of ... sleep? Indeed that mechanized voice comes over the coms once, all chipper and bright, "Congratulations, Crewmember! You have survived the process of waking up from Cryogenic Sleep! We will release the door of your pod now, and you will be greeted by medical staff!"
Your veins are on fire and your limbs are being stabbed by pins and needles, but the door of your pod opens with a hydraulic hiss and you're falling forward. You catch yourself with rubbery arms and noodly legs, and stagger a few steps forward. You're greeted by a person in a white lab coat, one hand holding a tablet. "Ah, right. You're awake. Good. Welcome to the Euphoria. You have questions, I have some answers."
They tell you your name, your age, your work designation, your species, and where you come from. It all seems kind of distance and fuzzy. Is that person you? It sounds like it could be. The darkness of the before is all you really know. Still, they say it with such certainty that you begin to believe it. It settles into your skin. You're who they say you are. They get you clean clothing. They get you food. They get you into a set of quarters. And they get you assigned to a work position on the roster. You see, everyone's a crewmember here on Euphoria! You're a crewmember here. They told you so. And it'll be your job to do your part, too.

Welcome to The Euphoria is a MU* set in a Sci-Fi world.
You will play a character who wakes up inside of a cryo-pod. The first things they will see is "Welcome to the Euphoria!". From there they will be greeted by the ship's AI. Once they survive the full revivification process they will be greeted by a member of the med staff. They are told what their name, age, rank, designation, and background are by this medical personnel. They might feel a fissure of disassociation at first, but the doctor is so certain and forceful that they start to believe it. They are who they were told they are. Still, everyone has some glitches from time to time when coming out of cryo-sleep. Right?
The U.P.S. Euphoria is a colony ship on a long term mission to the Andromeda Galaxy, to a planet that deep-space scans reported to be able to support humanoid life. The Euphoria is a happy, chipper place, where everyone has a place and everyone is content in that place. Everyone has a role, and everyone is happy with that role.
On this game people will explore the vastness of space, new worlds, and how the crew will solve problems when they are the only resources they have available to them.
What can you play?
Species:
- Human
- Espers - Psychics Human Offshoots
- Drekin - Scalybois
- Yllians - Glowing Ones
- Zllians - Darkling Ones
Branches:
- Command - Large & In Charge
- Security - Keepin' things SECURE
- Sciences - Poke the thing, does it do a thing? Poke it again.
- Engineers - Build Things, Repair Things, Try Not To Blow Up The Euphoria
- Diplomats - Lets All Get Along
- Medics - Stopping you from dying since 3340
I haven't decided on a system, I'm leaning toward Ares and FS3 because it seems pretty easy to set up and run with. But I also really love what little I've poked at Python so Evannia could be fun...
ETA: Note, I changed wording around to remove the term 'colonist' because I don't like the suggestion that RP will be about colonizing planets and new worlds, when the focus of RP will be about space exploration and ship based problems. There will be some planetside RP at times, but it won't be the main focus.

I am totally down with giving this a shot when it goes live!

@TiredEwok @Testament Thanks! I'm working on a small paragraph on the different races atm, but here's a little thing to note about characters:
We're All A Little Mad Here
Waking up from extended cryogenic sleep tends to play havoc on the mind or the body, or both! As such everyone aboard the Euphoria has their own little quirk or character tick. Every character comes out of chargen with two character quirks or flaws. They can be mental, social, or physical. One is chosen by the player, and one is chosen by staff. A mental quirk might be nightmares or the belief that they are being watched by something outside of the ship. A physical flaw might be the character being hard of hearing, or the having a limp. A social quirk might be having a stutter or not liking to make eye contact. Flaws and quirks can range to mild inconveniences to things that make daily life difficult but should never be things that make the character unplayable in the long term.
-
Small side note, I'm probably going to change the terminology of 'colonist' to 'crew member' in the intro / theme info. Because 'colonist' suggests that RP will focus around the colonizing of a new world, but that's not the actual RP I have an interest but in the RP of the space travel/ship based RP.

Curiosity: Your playable alien races are super alien?
On a scale of 'super-intelligent shade of the color blue' to 'how Troi had cool powers and no dumb prosthetics.'
-
@krmbm Hopefully this will answer your question!
Humans: Humans are your stock standard, well, humanoid. They were the first species in the Milky Way Galaxy to achieve Faster Than Light travel. They promptly caused the extinction of an entire planetwide species during their first interactions with an alien species. The Regretable Accident of Yves Major is written about in their textbooks as a warning to be more careful with how they approach what appears to be rocks in the future. Humans are mercurial creatures capable of forming pack bonds with -anything-. They are also capable of both extreme kindness and violence; sometimes in the same specimen. They are typically physically hardy, intelligent, and quick witted. They come in a variety of colors. Common Names: Antonia, Benedict, Catherine, Douglas, Elizabeth, Franklin, Georgette, Harry, Irina, Jack, Kelly, Lien, Momo, Noriko, Oscar, Paprika, Rascal, Sakura, Tsang, Ulga, Victor, Wendy, Xander, Yvette, Zendrick.
Drekin: Drekin hail from Drekia Minor, on one of the outer arms of the Milky Way Galaxy. They have only recently (comparatively speaking) joined the United Planets. Only being members of around a hundred years. They are a fierce, brave species. They are typically taller than their human counterparts, with skin that ranges from deep crimson to pale aqua, very rarely they are two toned in their skin. They also have a smattering of scales that run along the side their necks, jaws, and into their hairlines. Their hair comes in a variety of colors from black to gold. Their nails are much harder than other humanoids and can in the past have been used as a primitive weaponry. Drekin have what humans call 'reptilian' eyes, and have the ability to see in low-light situations that other humanoids have difficulty seeing in. They are typically more hot tempered then other humanoids, but most are fiercely determined to prove that they are just as advanced and civilized as the other UP races. Common Names: Aknar, Borkhiltur, Cvegdo, Dakron, Ekill, Frita, Geir, Halltura, Intriti, Jona, Kres, Lilka, Maknus, Nkala, Oddo, Rakna, Snoggi, Theotora, Ulfor, Viktis.
Yllians: Yllians share an ancestor race with the Zllians. They hail from Illuminara Major at the very edge of the Milky Way Galaxy, out even further than Drekia Minor. However, they are one of the founding three races of the United Planets. They achieved FTL travel shortly after the humans did, and met them in the middle of the Milky Way. Their appearance was described as "freaky" by the first humans to meet them, but the intervening centuries have all but erased the initial unease their glowing skin and fathomless eyes caused humans. The Yllians all give off a faint, phosphorous glow in a neon color ranging from soft pink to concerningly red. The color shifts and changes with their mood, though it is rumored that some Yllians have control over their glow, much the way humans have control over their facial expressions. Yllians otherwise look rather like human beings with hair in all the same places, noses, and teeth... But their eyes are all black. Yllians are naturally intelligent and cunning, they excel in science and diplomatic fields and tend to make excellent ambassadors or social scientists. Common Names: Annette, Benoit, Capucine, Deniel, Eloia, Fabrice, Gealle, Hector, Ines, Janvier, Kylian, Leandria, Malo, Noam, Odelon, Paule, Reymund, Segoline, Tanguy, Ugena, Valoree, Wenoc, Xandia, Yanis, Zepherine.
Zllians: Zllians share an ancestor ace with the Yllians. They hail from Illuminara Minor at the very edge of the Milky Way Galaxy, out even further than the Drekin homeworld. However, they are one of the founding three races of the United Planets. They achieved FTL travel shortly after the Yllians did. The two races have had a symbiotic relationship for as long as they can remember. So the Yllians shared their technology and discoveries with their cousin-race of the Zllians and helped them achieve FTL as well. When they encountered humans the aforementioned race were already shocked from meeting Yllians so were not as surprised by the appearance of the darker Zllians but were slightly so... One old and highly problematic human informational guide once described Zllians as "Yllians but inverted" -- It is to say that somehow the Zllians seem to swallow the light around them. Their skintones are typically sallow and pallid; ranging from gray to obsidian, but generally colorless. While their hair ranges from vivid neon colors to earthy tones. Their eyes typically match their hair colors, and hold a faint glow to them. They are otherwise quite human looking. Zllians are naturally a very curious race, and are often gifted engineers. They excel in any of the science fields. Common Names: Abele, Benedetta, Caio, Dalila, Egidio, Faustina, Gallo, Harrietta, Ignazio, Jolanda, Kudio, Luigia, Manlio,
Espers: Not officially recognized as a race within the United Planets, but they are starting to get there. The Espers are human beings who have psionic abilities. The current known abilities are telepathy, telekinesis, empathy, astral projection, and psychometry. Human history isn't clear if the Espers were a natural mutation/evolution or if they were an experiment that was just wildly successful. As of the last fifty years they have been working on gaining independence from humans-- the main problem is that currently to be considered an UP species one must have their own planet. Which the Espers do not. Common Names: See human list.

Looks neat. Always nice to see original sci-fi.
FWIW, FS3 probably wouldn't be a good fit (being high-tech with psionics and aliens doesn't really fit within the parameters of what FS3 works well for), but there are other systems you could use with Ares if you did decide to use it. Evennia's cool too, especially if you want more simulationist code. Good luck!
-
@faraday Oh, well, that's good to know.
-
@Cobaltasaurus I'd love to join in on this, and I'll even volunteer some of my coding time if you'd like to go with Evennia instead of FS3.
-
@friarzen Thank you for the offer! I'm leaning kinda heavily toward going with Ares, however, because after finally experiencing the web portal-- I really like being able to make characters through the website. Which as far as I know, Evennia doesn't have yet?
-
MUCH OOOH AND AHHH! I like.
-
@Cobaltasaurus It sort of does and doesn't. Since Evennia doesn't have any specific game system that comes with it as a base, there isn't really any way to guess what things would go onto a character sheet ahead of time. But, all of it is based on the Django website templates and models, so building a character generator webpage isn't too hard, depending on how complex of an RPG system you choose to use. It is definitely more work than just using Ares's built in FS3, though.
-
@friarzen I've started the preliminary steps for setting up Ares, but I'd still love any help you might wanna give!
Also... if anyone has any good resources on blue prints for star trek ships or any other sci-fi ship blueprints that house large populations of people, I'd love to take a look at them! When I did a 30-second google search earlier I mostly got blueprints showing me the outside of ships, and I'm interested in the inside. Stuff like habitation, engineering, etc. etc.
-
@Cobaltasaurus Ahh, ok, well, I can dust off my ruby skills, and see what I can help with.
-
Here are the blueprints for the Enterprise D. Hope it helps!
-
Huh, did I just squirrel in the middle of coming up with a list of common names for the Zllians? .... checks yWriter docs ...yup, sure did. Whoops. That'll be fixed later this evening.

It's even in LCARS format. I approve.

Okay so thoughts today: Roster vs Non-Roster.
My main thought on rosters is that while I like the structure of them, they cause some issues. What happens when people idle out? We're in space and there's no transferships to go to... So, how? Well, in this case I've decided that when anyone idles out they go back into cryogenic sleep. Allows for people to come back, also explains where people go when they go poof since this is well... not a place for transfers.
But also when you have a stricture roster where you have say a place for four science officers, what happens when someone wants to be the fifth science officer? I don't like.
But I also never really liked it when people could pop up and be like "I'm a exoterabiologist midship class 3".
So I'll do a roster of "named" position, that are basically feature-esque type positions, and then a list of generic positions that have an unlimited number that people can be. It'll be the captain, second in command, then the head of departments, and maybe a few key positions, and then it'll be like "science officer" or "merchant" or "diplomat" and stuff.
Flexible but with some structure.

Well, in this case I've decided that when anyone idles out they go back into cryogenic sleep.
Rosters definitely have their issues, and an enclosed environment does present added challenges. But it seems like that solution could be potentially disruptive for characters with relationships with the character who idled out. Like if their brother/wife/SO/BFF suddenly just went back into cryosleep for no reason.
